There were a few cells in his old, withered vampire heart that felt guilty for what he was doing, but he had to know her, he had to get to the bottom of this strange anomaly before him. There was something he knew without question, this wasn’t Katherine playing some witchy magic trick on him, this really was a human girl. He shrugged a little bit at her observations. “They gave me a small step up from the regular dorms, I don’t make much assisting but the room and board are complimentary so it does the job for now.” Compared to other homes Damon had lived in this dorm was the size of a walk in closet, but he wasn’t concerned, it was temporary.
“It’s not a problem, Miss Gilbert.” Damon answered in his velvet tone, with a smirk that could sweep anyone off of their feet. “I have yet to share a room with anyone, but I suppose that could change if housing doesn’t come up with something.” He didn’t seem concerned, falsely convinced for the sake of her believing him, that she would be in a dorm full of other freshmen girls soon enough. Damon’s eyes fell on her mouth as her teeth made soft impressions in her lip. Keep it together, Salvatore. He scolded himself, knowing he couldn’t allow her beauty to get the best of him, yet.
After getting his soda from the fridge, Damon situated himself back onto the sofa, smiling as she noted being impressed. “I’m a bit of a minimalist. A cluttered home makes for a cluttered mind.” Damon leaned forward and slid a coaster closer to him and placed his drink on top of it. “If I’m not doing work for my classes, I usually read or catch a movie on Netflix. The campus has a really nice pool, I go there for a few hours a handful of times a week. I’m a pretty laid back kind of guy. I make myself available for tutoring every Wednesday as well.” He left out the part where he scopes out the parties on the weekends to get a proper bite to eat from whatever tasty human comes his way.
Damon settled back against a pillow since Elena had made herself comfortable on what would be her bed for as long as he felt like keeping her around. “So, what will you be majoring in?” There were many other things he was curious about but that seemed like a safe and relevant place to start.

Damon played wicked games, that was for sure and if there was one thing that had never changed about him over the years, it was most certainly that. So far, his charm, feigned concern, and willingness to ‘help’ her had worked just as he had hoped, leaving him feeling pleased as punch when she came in and took a seat on the sofa. “It’s no problem at all, I like to help when I can.” He gave her a million-dollar smile, holding the act like the professional he was. “Not usually, no. They only do it when requested and usually only in case of siblings will they grant the request.”
“Her name is Elena Gilbert...” With the phone pressed to his ear he nodded to the person on the other end of the line, the woman who he had just compelled. “Yes, I see, well, keep me updated, I have no classes to sit in on today so I’m available any time. He pressed the end call button on his phone and leaned forward to set it down on the coffee table.
“Unfortunately, it looks like you’re stuck here, for now. At least until they get back to me on a possible switch. She said it could be a few days, since there are a lot of new students coming in and they’ll be making lots of changes and adjustments to dorm assignments over the next few days.” His ears gently focused on the soft pulse of her heart, it was still baffling him that this girl looked almost identical to Katherine. This is what Katherine would be like if she were merely a mortal girl, and it was strangely alluring to him. “Feel free to make yourself at home in the meantime, there’s food in the fridge, cable tv, wifi, it’s all yours for the using while you’re here and hopefully we’ll hear something from housing soon.” Damon rose to his feet and pointed to a door off to the left. “That’s the bathroom there if you need it.” He smiled at her again, his eyes lingering on hers for just a moment as he went to drab a drink in the small shared kitchen. Maybe she would be impressed with his tidiness with the dorm and not be as worried about staying here… he hoped something would make it bearable, compelling her was an option, one he only intended to use if absolutely necessary.

College, Whitmore College to be exact. The campus was great, the job was great and the very best part? Damon Salvatore had a virtually endless supply of warm blood and two years into his stint here, not a soul had caught on to the fact that he was a vampire. Mister tall, dark and handsome was a teacher’s assistant in large science lab classes, not particularly because he needed a job for financial reasons, but simply because his humanity was on and he was plain old bored.
It was an average Sunday afternoon, classes were beginning tomorrow for the new semester and new students were still moving into dorms all over campus. Ah, his favorite times of the year were move in days, lots of delicious new flavors to taste. On his way back to his dorm from the campus gym, Damon’s frozen blue eyes scanned his surroundings, and landed on… Katherine? Not possible. He honed in on her with his amplified ability to hear and she wasn’t a vampire, that heart beat was too human to be immortal. The girl and what he imagined was her parents helping her move in, were on their way to the housing office, probably to get her building and room number. Damon wasn’t letting this one get away from him. Not with looks as curious as those, everything was the same, her hair, her skin tone, the curve of her hips, all of it. It was mind blowing.
In an undetected blur, Damon made it to the office at least one minute before the Gilbert’s would make their way in and he stopped in front of Karen, the housing director and let his pupils do all the work for him. “The girl about to walk in with flowing brown hair and deep brown eyes, she rooms with me, wherever she’s assigned, change it.” Then he was gone again. He figured if it didn’t work out, he could easily get rid of her again with a little more compulsion.
He sped up to his room in record speed, the second bedroom in his dorm room had always been empty as he previously compelled housing to let him live alone. Typically females and males were not dormed together, but the floor was still co-ed, he may need to do a little convincing when it came to her as well. Damon changed his clothes from sweats to jeans and a button down shirt and plunked himself on the couch with a copy of Gone with Wind, acting as though he were the most innocent creature to grace the Earth as he patiently waited.
Whitmore College. It came around too fast. Leaving home, studying medicine and finally becoming a doctor just like she had always wanted. This was a place where her father Grayson worked for many years. A place she had often visited and although he had changed his line of work after a while from Whitmore, he was still helping as and when he could at Mystic Falls. This was an experience that was rare in life, an experience which could further her career and she would be at the place where she wanted to be. Journalism was already her strongest point and that was another route she had wanted to go but that would never stop the nature she had when it came to saving other people.
Life, had been everything to her. A huge example in what her father had done. Admiring everything about him that he saved those and accepted that all could not be saved. Heart-felt, caring, selfless… Elena Gilbert, a martyr. A woman who put others before herself and would always no matter what do the best she could in each and every way, but leaving her home town…the time had finally come, knowing she wouldn’t be in Mystic Falls forever. Elena wanted to get out in the world, to experience new things other than the small town she lived in. To saving people’s lives along the way. Little did she know of what she was about to experience, little did she know of her own fathers act.
Elena’s life had never been turned upside down. Parents living, little knowing of a life that should have been so downhill. An alternative life to Miss Gilbert where she experienced happiness in a way a woman should. Though, little knowing that her life would change eventually.
“I’m okay, Mom.. Dad”
A soft smile graced her lips as they said their goodbyes, leaving their daughter with her suitcase as she pulled it along by the handle towards the front desk. This was it. This was the moment they realised their daughter was no longer a little girl anymore, but a woman. Taking her room number and key, she waved it over towards them. ‘Here I go…you can go now…’ saying over more to herself than anyone else as she took a turn for the stairs, walking up the flights towards the bedroom she was roomed in. Questions already filling her head. What would her room-mate be like? really she was meant to be with Caroline and Bonnie but the room wasn’t big enough for the three of them and so it was just the two.. Elena however had to go elsewhere, not like it really bothered her. Caroline was rather picky when it came to rooms, and well… there was only so much time she could take with the blonde.
Sliding the key in the door, she turned and pulled on the handle before pushing the door open. Immediately her breathing hitched from the sight of the room but then it dawned on her, that she wasn’t alone and that the person wasn’t female. With a confused expression, her thumb pointed towards the door as she stepped out to take a look at the number.
“Excuse me, do you have the right room? I’m not supposed to be in a mixed dorm…”
Elena wasn’t even sure if they even had mixed dorms, but surely there had been a mistake, she certainly wasn’t going to stay in a dorm room with a man she didn’t know, a man in general.
Damon heard her approach the door before she unlocked it and stepped inside, and he put on his best casual-non-vampire face. He didn’t even look up from his book at first, appearing to be too engrossed to even blink an eye at the girl who had let herself in. Finally when she spoke, he put his bookmark in place and set his novel on the coffee table and stood. All the while letting it process just how much she sounded like Katherine.
“Well hello there. I’m Damon.” He sauntered over to her. “Been in the same room for almost three years now.” His shoulders shrugged. “Why don’t you have a seat and I’ll give the housing department a call for you? I’m a teaching assistant here and I can probably get this sorted out for you so you don’t have to run around campus all morning.” Of course his offer was empty, he already knew she wasn’t going to be going to any other room, all thanks to him.
Damon hadn’t given her much chance to accept or decline his offer, his cell phone was already out of his pocket and dialing the housing department. “Hi Helen, it’s Damon Salvatore in building 6, room 617. Yes, I’m calling to inquire about…” He put his hand over the phone. “I’m sorry, I didn’t get your name.” He almost said Katherine into the phone when he remembered that this human in the room with him who had a likeness to his ex, wasn’t actually her. The resemblance was… well, resemblance may have been an understatement. If he had known any better he would have said that Katherine had a twin or that this was Katherine playing some kind of witchy woo game on him.

Quiet. Cold. Empty. The house was nothing without Elena in it. Damon didn't bother cooking, in fact the most he had to wash at the end of the week were a few drinking glasses, other than that the kitchen was never touched. His time was spent in front of the tv when he wasn't working, he was living life day by boring day, he didn't bother with women and he hadn't tried to contact Elena, accepting the notion that she would probably end up much happier with someone else or simply just on her own.
The truth was, he missed her more than anything. Knowing he would do anything to be able to go back in time and undo the more recent past in order to keep her in his life. Flipping channels was becoming his favorite sport, and even in all of his distractions something always pulled him back to Elena. As he flipped passed the Lifetime channel he came across one of her favorite movies and shook his head. "Dear world, stop rubbing my face in it, would you?" He was a couple of glasses of bourbon into his night and before he could logically think about it, he sent off a text message to Elena.
How are you?

Her words echoed Stefan's reassuring ones from yesterday, but how could anyone, especially an angel like her, love a demon like him? Damon watched her go, putting space between them once again then put his forehead to the wall, closing his eyes. "I love you, too..' He whispered, not sure it could ever have the same value as it had before.
Damon did as planned and found himself in his room, not wanting to interfere with Elena's move or get the death stare from Bonnie. With his hands tucked behind his head, he laid on his bed solemnly staring at the ceiling. His cell phone rang then, Rose, again. Damon decided to answer it this time. "Rose... Yeah, about that... I think our little dance is over... I'm sorry... Not feeling whatever this is right now..." The conversation was short and he knew Rose wasn't happy but it didn't effect him, the only person he seemed to care about now was the one he never should have stopped caring about months ago.

Nothing could have prepared him for how this felt, for the feeling of having his heart ripped out of his chest by his own hand. She was going to walk out of his life because he had walked out of hers and that was all there was to it. As they stood there it was also as if he was seeing her again for the first time, seeing things he hadn't bothered to see in a long time.
Damon nodded in understanding at her words. Fully planning to retreat to his room to escape the almost guaranteed wrath of her best friend Bonnie. He watched her tear away her gaze and in a weird instinct that took over, as if he had no control over himself, his thumb slid under her chin to tilt her face up to his and he placed quite possibly the most melancholy kiss goodbye softly on her lips.

"This isn't about Stefan." Though that part didn't help. "Not that that part didn't open my eyes a little." Damon straightened the canisters on the counter top, absently trying to keep his mind focused and calmer than it had been the previous night. "You can move where ever you want, I'm in no place to stop you."
Damon turned around and faced her, pushing gently off of the counter and walking towards her, his gait much less threatening than it had been last time he approached her. He looked her in the eyes, absorbing everything that was the beauty of Elena Gilbert, because for all he knew, this could be the last time. He raised his knuckles to brush her cheek. "Who am I to clip a bird's wings when all she wants to do is fly?" He offered a weak half smile, if this was goodbye, he'd much rather say it with words that left things in a semi-okay place.

Damon still didn't speak. The reality of the whole situation was slapping-- no, punching him right in the face. He can see it in her eyes and in her expression that she's tired; tired of fighting, tired of pretending, and tired of the ache in her heart. All of which Damon himself had instilled within her.
Damon pulled out a chair and sat at the table, holding his head up with his hand, staring ahead at nothing in particular. "This will be something I regret for as long as I live." Now he was just thinking out loud, feeling that any attempt he could have made at just maybe fixing this was gone out the window. It was amazing how something he had wanted was backfiring on him so hard and so damn suddenly, as if he was finally awakening from a nightmare that he only created himself. "Do you need help taking your things to---" Damon trailed off. The last thing she probably wanted was his help. "...never mind." He finished, already knowing the answer to his question.
Finally he stood again, his body feeling exponentially heavier than it was before as he practically dragged himself to the kitchen to distract and busy himself with wiping counter tops that were already clean.

Before he had met and fell in love with Elena, Damon lived much like he had lived the past four months; he had no real purpose in life, women threw themselves at him and he caught them so to speak. That kind of life typically lead nowhere. Elena had brought a new kind of light to his life, gave him a home in her arms to come to at the end of a hard day. Hindsight really was 20/20.
He had truly disliked the awkwardness between them and couldn’t wait to get the means to move out, but in reality, now that he thought about it, maybe he just hated the awkwardness because he didn’t really want to be apart from her. Somewhere along the way he had gotten a little lost.
Damon ran the tip of his tongue along his teeth as he heard the soft sound of music playing, imagining what the girl on the other side of the door was doing. Had she cried herself to sleep? Had she engrossed herself in a book to distract her mind? He could take a fair guess that whatever the case, seeing him right now was probably the last thing she wanted after the stunt he pulled.
Damon opted to leave her be for the night, giving them both their space. In the morning, Damon left a note on the sink where she would find it before he left for work, it read: “No amount of apologies can take back what I did to you, I realize that now. - D”
It hurts. It would probably always hurt. Loving Damon had been like a wild fire, blazing and consuming and bright. She supposed she should have realized it would eventually fizzle out, for Damon at least. That was just the type of man he was. He made her feel alive, reckless, real. Little Miss Mystic Falls, straight A, cheer captain, valedictorian Elena. He’d crashed into her life and challenged her, made her question how she’d been living her life before him. Of course he got bored of her though. It only took a little longer than she’d thought.
The note does nothing to ease the pain in her chest, it’s been a gaping wound for much too long. Swallowing thickly, she follows the swooping lines of his words, reading it once more before folding the paper up carefully and setting it aside. Nothing had changed. Perhaps today was the day. She couldn’t stay here any longer, living in the shadow of a happiness she once had. He was starting to feel guilty it seemed, starting to pity her. That was the last thing she wanted.
So with her day off, she spent it packing up her room and everything that was hers in the house. She came across one of the last framed photos of them that had somehow survived. Their smiling faces practically mocking her. Where had she gone wrong? Laying the photo flat, she turns away from it, closing up her last box.
Damon hardly expected his note to be a cure-all or a cure-anything for that matter, he didn't really know why he'd left it for her, all of his words were the wrong ones after all.
At work he was distracted, his mind on overdrive, mostly replaying all the endless ways he'd practically rubbed their separation in her face. The women, the drinking, being gone for a few days at a time, all of it had been so fucking heartless. He'd had a few missed calls on his cell from Rose, he ignored them all, planning on dealing with her later when he broke off whatever the hell it was he was doing with her.
When he walked in the front door and slipped off his shoes, he glanced around... things were... gone, her things. Looking into the dining room he saw her closing up a box and he swallowed thickly. Fuck. He walked towards her slowly, feeling more defeated than anything else at the sight of her clearly preparing to get out of dodge. He couldn't fault her, she was only doing what he had wanted. All he was was a selfish bastard.
"'Lena.." Her name came out softly, barely audible on his breath, but nothing followed it. He had no words to speak, no perfect combination of syllables and sounds to make her stay, because this was his doing, this was his fault.

God Damon hated when Stefan was right. And he was always right. Damon shook his head in silence. He knew he wouldn't even be here if he didn't still feel something for Elena.
"She still loves me and I... I crushed her. And for what? So I could sleep around?" Damon pinched the bridge of his nose, he really was a first class idiot. Damon stood up and took his empty bourbon glass to the kitchen, he stopped beside Stefan on his way to the door. "Thanks for the chat, Stef." Damon patted Stefan's shoulder and headed out into the darkness.
He had a lot to consider before he got back home. When he finally did make it there, his eyes lingered on a framed photo of the two of them that managed to withstand the last four months. Damon exhaled a sigh as he ran his finger along the picture. There was no one like Elena Gilbert on this entire planet, if there was anything he knew, it was that. Boredom was a piss poor excuse for ever hurting her in the first place and an extraordinary woman like her deserved to be treated like the queen that she was.
Their house had a spare bedroom which had come in handy in the break up, but right now in that moment and maybe for the first moment since they split, the hallway of distance felt like miles. Damon rested his hand on her door once he got upstairs, his eyes closed as he contemplated whether or not he should knock.
Ex Marks the Spot // with thedoppelena
“I wish I was drunk, brother.” Damon walked inside at Stefan’s invitation.
“Listen I won’t stay long, wouldn’t want to interrupt your whole evening.” Damon found a seat in Stefan’s living room and cut right to the chase. “Alright I have two questions, one..” He held up a finger “Can’t you snuggle up to one of the many other women who throw themselves at you?” Damon didn’t even know if he wanted any answers or further details about whatever those two did, the question was mostly rhetoric.
He quieted for a second after that. “Two…” He straightened up and looked at Stefan with a deep breath and a pained expression. “Did I make the biggest mistake of my life?”
If he were more like his brother, Stefan would do the selfish thing and dissuade Damon from trying to fix things with Elena. But unfortunately, he wasn’t.
Sighing, Stefan crosses to pour Damon a glass of bourbon, moving to hand it to him before settling down in a seat himself. “Damon…I can’t help how I feel about Elena. I won’t apologize for taking the opportunity.” He had felt guilty about it at first, but damned if he’d pass up on the woman he loved because of it. Pausing though, he considers his second question. “Well. It depends on what you mean. If you’re referring to letting Elena go, then I’d say yes, you have.” And as much as he hated to admit it, he also knew she still loved Damon. He had been hoping things would change with some time, would bloom. But now sitting here with his brother, he felt that there was little hope.
“Don’t you dare try getting her back just to throw her away again, I won’t forgive you for it.” It’s a warning because Stefan was tired of seeing Elena so unhappy. She deserved better.
Damon accepted the bourbon, sipping it and allowed the warmth to bleed down his throat into his belly.
Damon really hated how jealous he could be of Stefan, his younger brother knew how to be the best version of himself for another person, that other person being his current ex-girlfriend. It irked him that Stefan was in love with her, and from the moment he learned they were spending time together, that was when Damon understood even a little bit of what Elena must have felt when he himself had other girls at the house. That was the moment when he realized what a mistake he had made and wanted to make an attempt at fixing it, an attempt that didn't get him anywhere because he continued to be a dick.
Damon shook his head. "I don't deserve her. I don't know how to be the person she needs me to be, she would never forgive me for everything I've done to her." The past day, the things he felt, the jealousy towards his brother, the realization of what he had done to hurt Elena in a million ways, it made him realize maybe he could overcome the boredom of their routine life. "She deserves someone who is all in."

“You’re right Elena, I don’t have any right and I don’t deserve a damn thing when it comes to you, but I try to talk to you and tell you that I realize I fucked up… yet again..” He tossed his hands up and let them fall to his side. “And all you have to say is ‘Do what makes you happy, Damon’?” He shook his head. This wasn’t even worth it, he should have known much better than to try and correct actions that couldn’t be corrected. “You know what, forget I even said anything.”
Damon grabbed the plates, carried them to the kitchen and scraped the untouched food into the trash, he tossed the plates a bit too hard into the sink, not breaking them but making a loud sound before he reemerged from the kitchen once again. “Sleep tight, princess.” He murmured as he grabbed his leather jacket and tossed it on, heading out of the house.
He had one destination in mind. It took him almost no time to drive the fifteen minutes to Stefan’s place and knocked on the door.
“Damon–” What did he want from her? She game him understanding, she wanted him to be happy. What more did he need? He was acting like she was being unreasonable somehow. But he was already out of the house in a flurry, the dishes still echoing with their clatter and the door slammed shut behind him. Swallowing thickly, she felt her heart give a squeeze before she was shaking her head and turning to disappear into her bedroom.
Stefan can’t really say he’s surprised when he opens his door and finds Damon on the front step. Though honestly he’d been expecting Elena again, upset over something else his idiotic older brother had done. “Brother.” Stefan sighs his greeting, looking weary.
Damon would have been an enormous liar if he said he felt absolutely nothing for the girl he had left in his dust back at the house. The girl who he once shared an incredible love and bond with, he'd be lying through his teeth. He didn't know why he drifted away from her, maybe it was the routine life, maybe it was their opposite schedules, who the hell knew, but he knew he did damage that there stood barely a chance of repairing even if he wanted to. Did he want to? It didn't matter, she'd never forgive him for everything he’d done. And she shouldn't.
"I'm an idiot." Was all Damon said in reply to Stefan's also very much deserved greeting. "And you..." Damon pointed at his brother loosely, an almost lunatic smirk on his lips. "You've been putting some extra hero gel in that hair recently." Damon had beef with his brother, but he also needed a good heart-to-heart chat with the only person who might stand a chance of talking to him.
