When men are harassed online

I did two things that garnered a torrent of harassment this week from angry men on the internet.

First I launched a new critical video series focusing on harmful ways masculinity is often portrayed in media. My first episode highlights the importance of open emotional vulnerability as seen on Cartoon Network’s Steven Universe. 

Second, in keeping with the theme of open vulnerability, I tweeted about how I found the fighting aspects of the augmented reality game Pokemon Go a little “unsettling.“ Specifically the game mechanic where users pit their cute monster friends against each other in battles. I expressed some slight discomfort that the ultimate goal was to have your Pokemon fight each other. Of course, this kind of “pet/monster” fighting is essentially the core of the franchise and has been for 20 years. I knew that expressing even mild discomfort and asking questions about the messages this combat mechanic sends would be an unpopular thing for a guy to say out loud. So I expected disagreement and some amount of pushback from fans of the game. What I got was an avalanche of hate, harassment and abuse.

Before I post examples, I think it’s important to point out how this online harassment differs from the harassment faced by women. The abuse directed at women is often of a decidedly sexual nature and is characterized by sexual objectification, sexual harassment, obsessive stalking and specific threats of intimate violence. As such the threats can be terrifying in a very personal, invasive and sustain way. I saw this first hand while monitoring harassment of the Tropes vs Women in Video Games project, where I worked as producer and co-writer on the first season.

When straight men are harassed the tone and tactics tend to be different. The harassment of men primarily focuses on emasculation. This is done by trying to associate the men being targeted with “women” or “femininity.” Accusations of weakness, of being too sensitive, and/or of being controlled by women are common, as are homophobic taunts. The not so subtle accusation is that targets are “not real men.” 

In short, men insult other men by calling them women. This behavior can be merciless, vicious and harmful. It very directly contributes to a culture of hostility towards women and femininity more generally. It also works to police masculinity by shaming or threatening any man who deviates from the status quo and dares to be openly vulnerable, empathetic or sensitive.

One thing remains consistent though, men are the vast majority of the ones doing the harassing of both women and other men. I should also note that as soon as I mentioned the harassment on Twitter, it quickly increased. This is because men are supposed to “toughen up” and “take it like a man.” When we refuse to bury our feelings, we are then attacked so as to bring us “back in line.” These cultural ideas about macho manhood also mean that men often don’t receive enough emotional support (especially from other men) when they become targets.

I need to give a content warning here because what follows is particularly vile.

These Tweets make it perfectly clear that our culture has a very serious toxic masculinity problem. My hope is that my new video project, focusing on how manhood is reflected in entertainment, can be part of changing these regressive ideas about what it means to be a man.

Who is @srhbutts/Sarah Nyberg?

Sarah Nyberg is the owner of ffshrine.org and in the past year has gained 8,000+ followers on twitter for criticizing the #gamergate movement. 

What is going on with them?

Old chatlogs from Sarah’s website ffshrine.org were leaked earlier this year that revealed Sarah to be a pedophile who takes interest in young girls, particularly her younger then 8-year-old cousin (Sarah was 21). Recently, more logs have been released and greater interest and scrutiny has been placed on Sarah due to a recent callout video (which I discuss here), and now a Breitbart.com article. How were the logs leaked? Was this a hack?

No. The first set of logs were directly hosted on ffshrine.org’s servers, and later logs were leaked by Roph, another user in the chatlogs, on their own website. 

Isn’t this a gamergate thing?

No. While scrutiny has recently been placed on Sarah due to her involvement in criticizing gamergate, people calling her out for pedophilia goes back to 2007, and her admission of pedophilia goes back to 2006. 

Is Sarah Nyberg/@srhbutts the same Sarah from ffshrine.org/the leaked chats?

Without a single doubt, yes she is.

She has also admitted that the leak was from her website.  

Is the ‘Sarah’ in the chat someone pretending to be Sarah Nyberg/@srhbutts?

No. 

Aren’t there also rumors of bestiality? Aren’t those fake/taken out of context?

Yes, the accusations of bestiality are based on an out of context chatlog. No, the rest of the chats are not out of context.

Yes.

Feminists in the community have not been able to organize in the short amount of time since learning of this new information, and so it falls to dedicated grassroots people who are able to act on this short notice.

I FUCKING HATE PETA!!!! THIS IS IMPORTANT GUYS!!!

So for those of you may or may not know the organization PETA is people against animal cruelty.

Well let me tell you a story that I just found out today.

Our dog Boulder is a show dog and he was at a show a few weeks or so ago.  PETA was also there and they were protesting how dog shows are inhumane. 

So what did they fucking do?  They let all/most of the dogs out of their kennels and put rat poison inside the kennels.

Boulder got sick after the show and as they were doing tests and everything they found the rat poison in his system.  PETA killed my dog.

My dog Boulder has cancer now which spread to his kidney and his lungs.  He is not going to make it.  He has lost a lot of weight and needs to be fed by hand because of fucking PETA. 

So I want you guys to spread this like wildfire.  Tell everyone about this.  Because of PETA we are losing a member of our family who is near and dear to us.

Girl Scouts return $100,000 donation to transphobic donor -- and then raise the money back in a day

"Girl Scouts is for every girl," said Megan Ferland, CEO of the Girl Scouts of Western Washington.

Earlier this year, the Girl Scouts of Western Washington received a donation of $100,000. They were thrilled – that amount of money comprises nearly a third of the organization’s financial assistance program, and it makes a huge difference to the girls they serve.

Then, they learned that the donor had made the gift on one condition: It was not to be used to support transgender girls, which the Girl Scouts has been doing for years. So the Scouts returned the gift. Every dollar.

To make up for the huge dent in their finances, they just launched an Indiegogo fundraiser to raise back the $100,000 and use it for every girl who needs them, regardless of whether or not the girl is transgender. In one day, they’ve already far surpassed their goal, raising over $175,000 and counting. And there are still 29 days of their online campaign remaining. 

The Seattle Met reports that it’s the second time “in less than five years” that a Girl Scout council [led by chief executive Megan Ferland] “has taken a public stand to support transgender girls.”

In 2012, when she headed the organization’s Colorado council, a 7-year-old transgender girl in Denver was denied entry to a troop. Although the council had never specifically said that it accepted transgender girls, the national organization had always made inclusivity the foundation of its mission. So after checking with the council’s attorney, Ferland issued a public statement welcoming transgender girls and explaining that the council was working to find a troop for the girl who’d been rejected. “Every girl that is a Girl Scout is a Girl Scout because her parent or guardian brings her to us and says, ‘I want my child to participate,‘” Ferland says. “And I don’t question whether or not they’re a girl.”

Check Out My Privilege!

So, at first I was going to make a comic strip about this, but I have far too much to say and little time to say it in.

I have a very pale, creamy-ish skin tone which automatically makes me just a “white chick” despite my actual heritage.  Thanks to my awesome “white privilege”, roping me and my other pale friends together as being the same race is totally cool and not at all rude.  I do, however, also have the “privilege” of being called racist and/or ignorant if I can’t tell on sight if someone is from China, Japan, or Korea etc.  Seems…a bit strange….but okay.

This is because there’s no such thing as reverse racism…and you’re RIGHT! There’s not!

Because hating on another race and denying them equal treatment is just called RACISM.

Let me tell you about my super cool “white privilege”…

I’ve had the “privilege” of getting death threats from passing cars, for being white. 

I’ve had the “privilege” of guns in my face, for being white.

I’ve had the “privilege” of being called ugly all the time, because I’m white.

I’ve had the “privilege” of being bullied in school for having a black step-mom, by black kids against interracial marriages, for being white.

I’ve had the “privilege” of being denied much needed help and aid, for being white.

I’ve had the “privilege” of going so far into debt I’ll never be free in order to put myself through school to try and better my life because there are no scholarships or tuition programs for being white. (there are for being female, but I didn’t take them because there wasn’t any for other genders)

I’ve had the “privilege” of being called names and accused of “cultural appropriation” for having piercings, tattoos, and letting a Jamaican woman put all my hair in braids to battle humidity, because I’m white.

There’s more, but I’ll stop here. Already looking forward to the “privilege” of being called a racist, because I was born white and thus born racist somehow.

The kicker?

I’m fucking Cherokee.

You’ll never stop racism with MORE RACISM…that’s insanely stupid.

I Really hope people would want more info before blindly signing something like this.  Like what is sea world going to do with them if this does pass? Those Orcas can’t be released back into the wild,they would die. I also fear that California would have the Orcas euthanized, a common practice hear in California when animal control finds illegal exotic animals and can’t place them in zoos. Sea world might be forced to move them to another facility in another state, which would cause overcrowding. I would be okay if this was more of a no more breeding or bringing new orcas into California but this doesn’t seem the case.

I’m all for animal welfare but somethings are just getting out of hand here. People want to help animals without thinking thing through or even educating themselves on the matter.

The animals involved in this may be black and white but the situation is not and so many people can’t grasp that.
