Hilo. I really love ur art and i was wondering if u ever made a post breaking down your rendering process and using colors n allat jazz. Im trying to get back into art studies after being fried by "the education system" and rendering/color theory remains my greatest enemy.

Hello! I do have this post where I share my rendering process using brushes I've been using a lot at the time. That's in black-white though, so I don't know how helpful that would be.

For using colors... I'm not really big on that department (if you could tell at all by my monochrome art archive) but one thing I do is, if I have a specific setting in mind for an illustration, I first do a 1:1 study for those colors, and then apply what I've learned to the illustration I want to do. For example:

I want to draw an illustration using these colors, so I study the reference photo. This takes like an hour or so. And then I go and try to do the same things I did for my illustration in that study.

Also helps to understand which colors go with which, how they transform in certain settings etc. All that color theory stuff. I'm not big on that either but what helped me a lot was this video by sabertoothwalrus, who explains it pretty straightforward in just 13 minutes. Hard recommend.

Overall, one advice I can give is to not think of what's the correct color for something. Skin it not orange, hair isn't brown, sky isn't blue. Skin can be green under right conditions, and sky can be red. Take some time to study different colors and experiment with how that can apply to your art, and don't be discouraged if you can't study for long. Improvement comes from consistent effort. Take like 30 minutes to study color for a week and see how that affects your art.

I personally struggle to study for long so I always draw a little something for myself after a study, which acts as a reward for me. Find something that'll make it fun for you and stick to that! Anything to keep things going helps.
