Then and Now: Friends of the Library Book Sale Posters
In celebration of our upcoming spring book sale, we decided to share an old flyer from 1976 used by our Friends of the Library along with our most recent book sale poster. We appreciate everything they do for us at the library, and we hope to see you at the upcoming sale.
Great Flood of 1951
On July 9 of 1951, hard rains fell upstream of Manhattan, Kansas, and kept falling for 4 days. Up to 18.5 inches then led to one of the greatest floods in the modern history of the Kansas River Valley.
In an era before flood control dams like Tuttle Creek Reservoir, the rushing Kansas River waters washed away residences, roads, and railroad tracks. 85,000 people had to be evacuated in eastern Kansas. A million acres were flooded, including the land of thousands of farms.
Dams have since been built, but as we saw in 1993, flooding may still course through our region.

Throwback Thursday: Book Display Edition
This week is all about retro book displays found throughout Lawrence, KS. The first three photos are of community displays for Book Week dated 1941. Display one was compiled by The American Legion, display two was done by the City Schools, and display three was put together by the Lawrence Memorial High School Book Club. The final photograph is a library book display from an unknown year.

We Heart the 70s
Our logo may have changed significantly over the years, but our commitment to lifelong learning and entertainment hasn’t. We recently found this dedication program from the opening of the new library building on September 24, 1972. Along with information on the renovations, the program also has a fun mock-up of the library’s exterior. And, who doesn’t love a good 70s color palette?

We thought we’d share this photographic gem of Edward Charles Anderson, son of Charles M. and Wilhelma Anderson, who was born Jan. 24, 1862 in Lawrence, KS. He’s holding a sign that states “I remember my first Christmas tree in 1867.” We hope you have a very happy holiday season filled with joy!

In honor of the start of basketball season, here’s a picture of 7 basketball players from the Lawrence Business College. The Lawrence Business College was founded in 1869 and was located in the Lawrence National Bank building on 647 Mass Street. Some of the course offerings advertised at the college include: bookkeeping, civil service, stenotypy, shorthand, penmanship, business English, salesmanship, typewriting, rapid calculation, and commercial law.

Throwback Librarian Style: Halloween Edition
In addition to the creepy and creative kids costumes we posted two weeks ago, we also found these eccentric librarian costumes from the 80s. We now have photographic proof that librarians have always had an obsession with cats.
Halloween at the Library: 80s Edition
Looking through our archives, we found some amazing Polaroids from Halloween at Lawrence Public Library in 1980. We’ve compiled some of the most interesting, bizarre, and retro kids costumes - even if some of them are a bit on the creepy side. Do you have any throwback costume images you’d like to share? Downtown Lawrence Throwback

Then and Now: Bookmobile Edition
Lawrence Public Library began its bookmobile service in the 1960s with a full-size bus-like vehicle that visited selected neighborhoods and local parks, especially during during the summer reading program where a storyteller accompanied the BKM to provide a storytime as well as books. The service was suspended in the 1980s but returned in a revamped service to older patrons in the 1990s. Currently, service is taken to local retirement communities but all residents are welcome to visit the bookmobile and check out materials.
Designed by architect George A. Berlinghof, Lawrence Public Library's Carnegie Building featured a Neoclassical style with Corinthian columns located at the corner of 9th and Vermont. Photo of the library circa 1920. Read more about the history of Kansas libraries in our local history collection.
