Gail Albert Halaban (American, b. 1970)
“Gail Albert Halaban’s Out My Window (2019) is both a penetrating exploration of modern community and a group of moving and beautiful photographs. The project started when she moved to New York from Los Angeles. In an effort to combat feelings of loneliness and isolation, she began to use her art as a way of connecting with her neighbors. She starts by explaining her work to potential participants and asking for their involvement. If they agree, Albert Halaban facilitates communication among the neighbors and arranges to photograph one from the window of the other. In this way, Albert Halaban employs photography as a form of social engagement. For despite platitudes about modern technology making the world a smaller place, this same virtual environment can also result in feelings of isolation and extreme self-absorption. By connecting strangers who live across the street from each other, Albert Halaban’s expertly composed, beautifully rendered, large-scale photographs encourage viewers to take a fresh look at the people they see every day. “

Shae De tar: Painted Photographs
“Shae DeTar creates otherworldly photographic mixed media prints, taking her subjects out of reality and placing them within her ethereal world. DeTar adds layers of paint to the photographs to exaggerate color, create texture, and add elements of fantasy to the work, often working in large scales, from 4-7 feet. Shae's work has been featured in Interview Magazine, Italian Vogue,The New Yorker, The Huffington Post, Ny Magazine, I.D, Vice, Dazed, Forbes, Nylon, Marie Claire, Style.com, ElleUk, TeenVogue, ElleUk, Blouin Art Info, Fast Company and Refinery29. Shae exhibits her work internationally and recently took part in 'The Female Gaze' exhibit with Vogue Italia and spoke on a panel with the Vogue Italia editor Chiara Bardelli Nonino in Milan. This year Shae took part in an art exhibition in London that NARS and Refinry 29 teamed up to present and she was involved in a group show in Berlin, Germany at Johannsan Gallery. Shae has recently taken a step aside from her painted photography work for awhile to go to university and master in Classical representational oil painting and is excited to see where this will take her. Shae is still making hand made large scale painted photo pieces from her archive for collectors while she is in school for oil painting.”

In Omatandangole reality and fantasy converge. The images that comprise Aapo Huhta’s most recent photo book are rooted in the real world but they could have as easily been dreamed. Shot over two years, the extraordinary landscapes of the Namibian desert became metaphors for issues of personal and global significance. “[The term] seemed to reflect my photographic pursuit of illusion that is rooted in actuality,” writes Huhta in a short text included at the end of the publication.
