This movie reference was given to me by Dennis Wixon, one of my professor's at USC. It is a brilliant reference for so many reasons, but my favorite part is the intro sequence, which is perfectly exemplary of the old-school machine-like aesthetic that we're using for the technology in Ardum.
Jason Knetge made some wonderful low-poly models for Ardum to help us do some more detailed grey-boxing. I'm super happy with their shapes and details. Making this spaceship is starting to feel more and more like building a doll-house.
I did a playtest of Richard Emm's thesis project today, which meant that I got to do a detailed system chart of Ardum. It was a great design exercise for me as it forced me to think really about each component of the game and how the various systems interact with each other. The chart itself gives a nice concise idea of how the game flows, and it's nice to have the whole game presented in a glance. Thanks for running me through this, Richard!
One of the spectacular 3D modelers for Ardum, David Kertesz, made the shell of the spaceship and some architectural pieces so that we can start grey-boxing the world. He did a wonderful job of knowing what I needed, even though I didn't. This is going to be really fun to play with.
My friend and classmate Bryan Zhang has a background in architecture and a lot of experience with level design, so I asked him to design the level layout (and spaceship) for Ardum. He did a magnificent job, and I'm incredibly excited to turn these mockups into the real thing. These drawings are a really strong reminder for me of why I love working on creative collaborative projects - the result of this kind of work is the sum of many talents, and the final product will be more than what each of us could have achieved alone.
Ardum's first all-hands team meeting! We held this meeting on a Friday night, so I'm impressed by everyone's dedication. This meeting was an opportunity to get people on the team to meet each other since they normally don't have the chance to. We got to talk about things like team t-shirts - very important stuff.
Sound design meeting! Nic was able to make this meeting - I like having him around to talk with the team because he's way better at explaining certain ideas about tone and aesthetics to people than I am. He's good at reeling me back!
Today the first team update email went out! I hope to send out these emails to the whole team every week so that everyone has the same base knowledge, and so that I can spend less time catching people up on certain details.
Cellular automata! Using this as an idea for Ardum's face was a suggestion by Andreas Kratky. The pixelation and movement is a neat aesthetic, but it's also a procedural form that takes it shape and look from a set of computational rules. A neat thing to imitate for an AI.
I like this as an idea for how Ardum's face can have motion. Maybe animations between expressions look like this?
