My name is Halcyon Winter, I am twenty, and reside in a modular cabin. I am a daughter of Lethe and a legacy of Aphrodite. I am enthralled by the stories the ancients told of our parents and the ancient Greco-Roman philosophies as a whole. During the academic year I attend a small liberal arts college, studying the classics. I have, by my peers in the past, been described as cold and detached. But what do they know, hm? Here is how I look, not that it truly matters any:

Halcyon had returned for winter break, it seemed.

She also appeared to be undergoing a character shift.

Gone were the pressed shirts, skirts, and blazers, now the shirt was half-tucked and haphazardly buttoned, no tie or blazers in sight, skirt wrinkled, and one knee high sock higher than the other, only her loafers were in pristine condition. Her hair was pinned out of her face in a messy ponytail, her hands stained with ink, and glasses dirty. Her legs were littered with small scrapes and bruises.

Forget a tortured poet, she was a tortured academic.

"Halcyon, you've been missed." August grinned, stuffing a basket of bandages into a cabinet as they turned to her. "You look like shit. What have they been doing to you?"

August, on the contrary, seemed to be thriving. Perhaps it was the holiday season, or more likely the almost eerie vibe to camp that came with the barren trees, the chill in the air, and most of the campers having gone home for the season.

“I wrote a paper on a Dionysian ritual. Not a Bacchanal, I’ve learned, but I still performed it, as you can see……..I’ve been altered. But it was wonderful.” There was a gleam her eye as she spoke, one that seemed to indicate a craving sated.

“And then the hangover induced migraine shot me. I’ve written much better essays but I settled for coherent. Luckily my prof- luckily Richard- knows me well enough to know that I’m speaking truthfully.” She hums.

"Oh yeah?" They hummed, raising both eyebrows. The gleam in Halcyon's eye must have been contagious, considering the near matching one that had formed in August's. "That certainly explains... this."

They snorted softly, before shutting the cabinet and turning on their heels to lean back against the counter.

"What was it like?"

“Sublime.” She sighs.

“Just the small taste of Dionysian madness soothed this itch in my brain.”

She pulls out her own first aid kit, and there’s some bloodstains on the packaging of the antiseptic, and she applies Neosporin to a decent cut on her shin.

“How has camp been? Anything particularly entertaining?”

"I could help you with that, you know. You're in the infirmary after all." They feigned annoyance, though their amused smile betrayed them. "I'm sure madness was a good look on you. Did you have to sacrifice anything?"

"Nothing much, things always slow down this time of year. Bits of dirt on cabin five, but when is there not?"

She rolled her eyes but the fond sigh that followed betrayed her as she allowed them to do their thing.

“I poured honey into the fire and extinguished it with wine, he seemed to appreciate it when I stopped by.” She responds.

“And yes, I like to think it did.”

She pauses at their response to her question.

“I’d like to know anything you’re willing to share.”

"That does sound sublime." They hummed, walking over with a bottle of rubbing alcohol and a handful of cotton rounds. "Well, most of my dirt is on Rio Holroyd, but that's because we ironically run in similar circles. He's being babysat by a cabin twelve kid currently because he fist fought Maddox Haynes in the cafeteria."

“I’m not surprised, it was a long time coming.” She shrugs, clenching her jaw when he applies the alcohol to her cut.

“Sadist.” She huffs.

When Dionysus heard from a satyr that a camper was attempting a Bacchanalia, he didn’t believe them, however, there was now a girl sitting in front of him.

Her hair was disheveled, and crowned with laurel leaves, and her breath smelled of wine. She was shaky, as if she’d been fasting for days, maybe even weeks.

The rest of her smelled like a fire, and there was a distant look in her eyes.

“I was so close.” She mutters, angrily, “So close to achieving it.”

A Bacchanalia was a tricky thing for any mortal to do, Excessive drinking which could easily lead to alcohol poisoning, As well as the fasting. After all mortal’s needed food.

Dionysus didn’t want to admit it, but he was a tad impressed by the girl’s spirit and determination.

“What exactly did you plan to achieve? Aside from the getting drunk part?” The god asked taking a sip of diet coke

“To live without thinking, to achieve release of the primitive impulses I’ve worked so hard to subdue, because it’s dangerous to ignore the existence of the irrational.” She huffs.

“The plan was to induce Dionysian madness, something you’re familiar with, Lord Dionysus.”

“And i’m guessing you were unable to release your primitive impulses?” The god muses.

“And i am very familiar with Dionysian Maddness- Less so with bacchanalia’s- I haven’t participated in one for a few decades…Plus there’re more of a Bacchus thing.”

“I felt it, I was right there, but then your damn satyr threw me over its shoulder and brought me here like I was doing something wrong.” She narrows her eyes.

Dionysus huffed, crossing his arms. “Though i don’t entirely agree with what they did, bacchanalia’s can be dangerous. The whole fasting and drinking part.”

Well not her, but her previous incarnation had. Sure things had gone a little haywire, but that wouldn’t have happened with her bacchanal.

She was more calculated, more confident, and had her predecessor’s mistakes to not follow.

"You demigods always know what you're doing." He murmured sarcastically before looking back up at Halcyon

OH ANON THE CAN OF WORMS YOU HAVE OPENED

Spoilers ahead for The Secret History by Donna Tartt (it’s so good yall should read it, tw: abuse, murder, alcohol, drugs, incest, glossed over animal death, and suicide.) The only TWs that matter for my explanation are murder and suicide.

Halcyon Winter, oh my fucked up girl

Halcyon Winter is the daughter of Lethe and an unimportant father who died very early in Halcyon’s life. Leaving her in the care of her father’s aunt and uncle. Said aunt and uncle lost their son Henry to a suicide. Well……..kinda

Somehow, Henry got reborn, not sure how cause there is NO WAY that fucker went to Elysium, and he most DEFINITELY followed the Greek way of thinking but alas. He did. The rebirth is Halcyon. She figures it out fairly quickly, and so do her adoptive parents, and they LATCH onto that. They start to mold her into a…..new Henry of sorts.

Main problem with that: HENRY HAS COMMITTED MURDER. TWICE.

And Y’know, performed a Bacchanalia which ended up in the first murder. But, they’ve set her up to follow the same path. And she does. She follows Henry’s life to a T. Even going to the same college in the same program that Henry went to, Hampden College in Hampden, Vermont, for the same classics major.

Enter Richard Papen, her professor, AND HENRY’S FORMER CLASSMATE. In my lil crossover AU, long after the case was closed and the evidence was too outdated to use, Richard, under a pseudonym, publishes the events of The Secret History, and it has the effect that it had in our world: creates a generation of pretentious classics students. So Hampden has a reason to bring back its Classics course.

Anyway, Halcyon is in Richard’s class and he clocks her ass as the reincarnation of Henry IMMEDIATELY.

Now, Richard’s classes are small and intimate, much like Julian’s were, but Richard sought to PREVENT another situation like the one he was in from happening so he’s actively taking steps to do so, but the classes end up small and close like his was anyway. This group is less likely to perform ancient rituals to induce Dionysian Madness and commit murder anyway, except for Halcyon.

BUT, Richard clocks that Halcyon can be saved!!! And she can! So he’s working on her, she will get better chat I prommie. But he becomes more of a father to her cause unlike her legal guardians (even though she’s 20), he has her best interests at heart. She will be as grounded as you can be at 20 for attempting the bacchanal I assure you.

Cause she KNOWS what could happen, she got her hands on Richard’s book. She is fully aware of what could happen, she’s just convinced she’s built different.

She watched Seth approach the beach out of the corner of her eye, sighing in irritation.

Seth flopped down beside her. Gods he looked horrible Seth had been dropping weight rapidly, his eyes were irritated and red, and he spent most of his time sleeping.

"Hey." He mumbled, voice scratchy and hoarse. "I had no idea the topside was so bright" Seth huffed, gesturing up at the sun as he rubbed his eyes. "I can't wait to go home"

“Sunglasses exist.” She sighs.

“And I’m sure Tartarus is more tolerable than this wretched bug-fest.”

"It's still too bright! Tartarus literally doesn't have a natural light source, and now im up here with the brightest light source ever! And the sunburns are horrible!" He groaned, rubbing one of the red spots on his arms. No matter how much exposure to the sun Seth got, he still remained that deathly pale

“Ugh, tell me about it. Get some Aloe Vera from the infirmary, makes it go away faster and soothes the itching.” She advises.

“And as for the sun, there is nothing I can do for that.”

She adjusts her glasses, huffing slightly when she realizes they’re dirty.

Seth nodded, laying down in the sand. "This sand is nice, but I miss the banks of the Phlegethon."

Florian had arrived at camp two days ago.

And honestly? he had no idea how he got here. He hadn't even known this camp existed! Sure, he knew he was a demigod but that was only because his mother, Lethe had told him in a dream.

Ian had spent two days in the camps infirmary recovering from some minor injury's, dehydration, and minor malnutrion.

But know, thanks to camp's medics Ian was ready to actually explore his new home.

He made his way up to the cabins door, he knocked a few times and then opened the door, peeking inside.

The other kid was clearly used to being the only one in the cabin.

Books and translations were scattered all over the place, and said other kid was passed out at a desk in the corner, Montblanc pen still in hand.

It didn’t seem like she slept often.

He looked around the small cabin, noting the many books and papers that scattered the room. He didn't mind the mess, His room at home had been messy.

He didn't want to wake the older girl but Chiron did tell him to go find Halcyon in the Lethe cabin

"Are you...Halcyon?" He spoke, raising his voice a bit

Halcyon jerks awake, pushing hair out of her face.

“Who’s asking?” Her voice is cold and she looks at him….neutrally at best.

“Did Aspen send you?”

"um..." He blinks, looking the girl over. he points at his chest "i- I'm asking?"

for a moment or two there's an awkward silence before the boy speaks up again

"Oh! Uh- I'm Florian, Florian Larkin." He smiles awkwardly pushing some hair from his face

"And...No- I don't know any Aspens. Uh- The horse guy, Chiron sent me."

Halcyon straightens at the mention of Chiron.

“What does he need?” She asks, standing up and straightening her outfit, which looked like a school uniform, and reaching for a blazer.

“Am I needed at the big house?”

"Um- No, I- My mom is Lethe- and he said to come find you..." Florian noted Halcyon's School uniform? These two had very different Fashion taste.

Florian was wearing a big grandpa sweater, Jeans and green converse, all stained with dirt. He hadn't gotten a chance to wash his clothes, he'd need to do that soon.

"Uh- apparently were siblings?"

“I suppose I’ll have to move things around so you’ll have a place to sleep.” She mutters.

“I’ve been meaning to properly organize, I suppose.”
