“Oh,” Was all Arian managed at the sudden interruption to his pace. It was odd, he thought, how a split second can change the entire world around you. For example, a second before, there had been no ball, and no girl standing directly in front of him. And now, there was.
“The size of the brain isn’t necessarily a sign of intelligence.” He replied, confused as to whether or not this was another figure of speech. He hadn’t heard it before.
After a few moments, he realized he hadn’t done what his father had taught him to do when someone helps you. Especially one who had just saved your face from a football. “Yes, I’m okay.Thank you.”
“I know, but the power of that muscle sort of is. If you have to work out your muscles, you have to work out your brain too,” she pointed out. She smiled and nodded as he finally spoke, glad that the kid hadn’t been totally spooked by the football flying at his face. “No problem. I love to show up those guys. They hate me for it, but I think it’s hilarious,” she explained with a bright, cheery laugh.
“They do seem a bit rude,” He offered, giving a small smile. “My name’s Arian. I’m new here.” He introduced, careful to enunciate his words so she could understand. He used to have a terrible problem with muttering.
He didn’t really know what to say next., but he felt a strong sense that he should say something. He decided to divert to a topic he was comfortable with. “They have a lot of interesting animals here in Boston. I saw a bog turtle just the other day. I’d never seen one before.”
“Oh.” He felt a bit stupid now. People were just so odd sometimes, though. “It’s perfectly okay. It’s not like I can’t understand you. It doesn’t harm me in any way.”
He took another bite of his apple, before noticing a small bird in the clearing in front of them. “Robin. You see a lot of them around here.”
Arian heard a quiet voice, a bit unsteady, and he looked around, curious as to who it was. He never expected the person to be talking to him, but when he found that it was, in fact, a girl looking directly at him, he was happily surprised. As bad as he was with social situations, he loved meeting new people. He took a seat beside her.
“Thank you.” He said, pulling an apple out of his bag and beginning to chow down on it.
Shayla gave him a small smile as he sat down “n..no problem. Y…you looked like you were t..trying to find a place to e..eat… sorry” she added immediately looking down ashamed and embarrassed about her stuttering. It was something she couldn’t top no matter how hard she tried.
“Sorry? Why?” He asked, not quite understanding what was happening. Had he missed something? He did that quite often. “You haven’t done anything to warrant an apology?”

Arian mid-stride stopped when he heard the voice, turning quickly towards it’s source. A kind student had cleared off his table and was now offering a seat. After double-checking that there was no one else he could be talking to, he quickly moved over towards the table.
“Thank you very much,” He said instinctively, remembering what his father had taught him about being polite. He didn’t know what exactly you were supposed to say after that, though. He was incredibly unsure of what to do in this situation. After a few seconds of deliberating, he decided to go ahead and start eating. It was lunch, right? That’s what people did at lunch.
