Backstory
Child Airi lived peacefully with her elderly father, a former traveler who was a loving parent. When he died of old age, the village took her in. She was raised by a family and became best friends with their daughter, Hikari, who was a little older than Airi.
One day, Hikari accompanied her father to town and caught a contagious illness spreading through the region and returned home sick. The parents decided that Airi stays in other villagers house most of the time.
At sunset, a traveler arrived. He claimed nearby villages were also affected and that he carried a miracle remedy from overseas. Desperate, Hikari's parents believed him. They bought the "medicine" and gave it to Hikari that night.
The next morning, villagers gathered around the house after finding the parents' bodies. Hikari was gone, disappeared into the forest before sunrise. The villagers hid the bodies from Airiās view who was devastated.
A lower Moon was commanded by Muzan to spread demon blood through the region. Turns out the medicine was demon blood.
Airi joined the Demon Slayer Corps to find Hikari and end her suffering, the only way to honor her best friend.
Present Day
When Airi saw Tanjiro searching for a cure to save his sister, it shook her to the core. She hadn't even entertained the idea that she could cure Hikari when sheāll find her. She was ready to kill her best friend when the time comes but Tanjiro's determination changed her perspective. From then on, she made herself available to Tamayo and Shinobu, helping with their research however she could, all while carrying the guilt of having lost hope too soon. Was it because Hikari's original illness couldn't be cured that she stopped believing?
