Miranda Moody’s greenhouse was stiller than Lake Mercy on a thick and windless day like this one. The stalks and leaves and flowering petals were stock still where they should have been blowing against the windows. The fans weren’t on. Why weren’t the fans on?
Someone opened the big, glass door. Someone flicked the switch for the fans. Someone picked up the watering can, dipped it toward the dirt. Someone walked along the aisle toward the very back. Someone dropped the tin can so it rattled against the gray floor. Someone dropped to their knees and looked for a pulse. Someone tried to start the girl’s heart again.
Who knows what led the girl to that greenhouse on Miranda Moody’s property in the early hours of July 31st? What was the siren song that beckoned her to those glass walls and green leaves? What was she trying to accomplish?
Was she trying to run? To put as much distance as she could between herself and her suffering? So much so that she’d die before she’d live with it another second? Was she seeking something better on that mythical other side?
Was she trying to numb herself? To sacrifice every feeling in a desperate attempt to deaden the sharpness of her suffering? Did the plants call her, promise they could make it all stop?
Was she trying to learn? Was she so stubborn and fearful that her suffering must have a meaning? Had she spent so long trying to endure that her body betrayed her - dying rather than living to see the lesson? Did she go to that greenhouse in search for that meaning?
Was she trying to hurt? To make someone, something bleed for how she bled? Was she trying to take something back for how she was robbed?
Everyone has a patronage, an angle by which they approach their suffering. How they seek to make the pain less. Alleviation? Despair? Endurance? Retribution?
YOUR PATRONAGE is an upcoming skeleton roleplay group surrounding the events leading up to, and the fallout from the death of 18 year old Larissa Kearney. It deals with sensitive themes such as abuse, drugs, and death. The group is inspired by such works as Twin Peaks, Picnic at Hanging Rock, Over the Garden Wall, and more.
