Role of students in creating environmental awareness?

I have pursued both my Bachelor and Master of Science degrees in Environmental Science, and from the knowledge, exposure and experience I have gained so far, I strongly believe that Environmental Science and related fields of the subject have huge scope in the future, especially by the next 7–10 years.

As for the question, we as students can and will play a major and crucial role in spreading Environmental awareness primarily because students in this field possess more knowledge and sense about the environment than the common public. What I realised while pursuing my higher studies in Environmental Science is that the knowledge of a common man when asked about the Earth, Nature, Environment, and its degradation was only limited to terms like Carbon Dioxide, the Ozone layer, Air pollution, Water pollution, etc.

BUT IS THAT ENOUGH?

I realized that to take a step to spread awareness about the Environment, we need to brush the basics and have awareness of more than just CO2 in the air or global warming. We can’t just walk around and campaign about saving the Environment without knowing the Why’s and How’s of Environmental degradation.

Environment Science is a combination of everything we’ve studied since our childhood. Aspects of Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Biotechnology, and other subjects play a key role in the functioning and stability of the Environment!

As my share of effort to spread environmental awareness, I have created a blog “Envibrary” for people to know and understand the basics and intricacies of the Environment in a simple way. If you search the internet for blogs and websites regarding environmental issues, you will mostly find content with overwhelming, advanced, and complicated data that may screw your understanding process. Thus, I have tried to tailor down complicated topics into simple and understandable content FOR EVERYONE TO LEARN!

Green technology is not enough to save the environment!

It is undeniable that with the advent of advanced technologies there will be growth in industrialization, but mankind can and should also invest more on greener ways to tackle global warming issues. However, only developing green energy facilities and promoting green transportation won’t be enough. It is also more ecologically and economically beneficial to indulge in conserving and multiplying forest cover and vegetation!

In recent years, mankind has invested a lot of time, money and expertise in developing green energy facilities and promoting green transportation. However, focusing on conserving forest cover and increasing vegetation is also very important.

Forests and vegetation are crucial elements that maintain the average atmospheric and surface temperature on earth through transpiration and are also major carbon sinks that maintain the CO2 and Oxygen levels in the atmosphere through photosynthesis. Increasing vegetation would ultimately help tackle global warming issues in the following ways:

Transpiration

Plants and trees transpire, which means the moisture that is carried through plants from roots to small pores on the underside of leaves, changes to vapor and is released to the atmosphere. It is essentially the evaporation of water from plant leaves. This leads to cooling of the surrounding air and thus a considerable control on the rising temperatures caused by global warming.

Natural Carbon sink

CO2 is the most prominent greenhouse gas. If there is more vegetation, the plants will utilize more of the CO2 that is emitted into the atmosphere from various sources for photosynthesis and release Oxygen in return. Thus, vegetation will act as an effective carbon sink, reducing the CO2 levels and increasing the Oxygen content in the air, ultimately improving the average air quality damaged due to global warming.
