In GtN, Gideon and Harrow have a similar reaction upon seeing a sweet and/or heartfelt moment between necromancer and cavalier at a literal distance of five pages.

“The solace [Jeannemary and Isaac] were taking in each other was the bruising, private solace between necromancer and cavalier, and Gideon was embarrassed to be audience to it.”

“Harrow ignored this cavalier-necromancer [Camilla and Palamedes] banter and cleared her throat, pointedly.”

(Both from chapter 24 of Gideon the Ninth)

They are both, in their own way, showing how embarrassed they are to be privy to that kind of affection. In both cases, there is a moment being had by a necro-cav pair; Jeannemary and Isaac holding each other on the one hand and Palamedes expressing his worry over Camilla’s wound on the other. Maybe it’s because neither of the Ninth House have ever experienced that level of physical fondness, but I’m willing to gander it’s because both Harrow and Gideon actually yearn for it.

They both hurt internally and they seek that solace in each other. They see it what their relationship should be, what it can be, and they want it—need it—desperately, craving to take that step so badly towards the other and still letting something silly like ego or pride or just straight-up fear get in their way.
