"...Rosa, huh? You wanna know about her?" That's probably not a surprise, it's pretty easy to see that she'd draw a crowd if anyone would. Of course, it's not like Zima would have the most to say about her, right?

"...She's an idiot, is what she is. I wish she'd act like every other conniving noble bastard so it'd be easy to just hate her and move on, but she makes it difficult by being an idiot." Really, that's not the best word to use, but it's the first that comes to mind. "I still don't know what to do about her. I wish it was as easy as it always seems to be in the books Istina's always reading. At least she seems to be doing better now that we've left Chernobog..."

“It’s an experiment!”

Hibiscus reaches into a bag next to her pile of combustibles, throwing a cloud of dust into the fire. There’s a loud whoosh and a tall pillar of purple flame, accompanied by the telltale crackle of lungmen fireworks.

When the blaze clears, Hibiscus can be seen throwing more charcoal into the fire. Eventually, she comes to a stop on the opposite side of the fire from Ansel. There’s only a few feet between them, but the fire burns hot enough that one couldn’t reach across without getting hurt.

“It’s related to Lava, of course. I’m watching the fire, seeing how different materials burn. How different powders and liquids interact with it. Really I just want to understand fire itself.”

She stokes the fire a bit with her staff, the normally polished metal black with soot.

Well, that wasn’t the answer he was expecting. And yet, in a way, it was so very Hibiscus-like. Devoted to her sister, to the point of doing something this worrying just to try and... understand her better? Was that what this was all about?

“Aaah! Warn me before you go throwing something that noisy in!” he shouted, flinching from the dust and the sparks that Hibiscus threw into the fire, though it likely wasn’t even heard through the crackle. He couldn’t help it, the ‘racial traits’ he always threw up as an excuse for snacking now working against him.

“This is... this is great and all, but couldn’t you have done something like this in a lab? With a much smaller fire!?” Okay, that was probably easier to hear. “What’s the point of coming all the way out here and setting up such a big bonfire?” Not to mention the staff being burned, but that wasn’t his issue. That was Vulcan’s problem for later.

Unfortunately, those gossiping in the medical department were talking about something from during the day, so ansel would be driving out into the night. This would prove to be somewhat beneficial, as it made Hibiscus fairly easy to located… from the huge circle of fire on the beach.

Hibiscus was in the middle of it, walking around, adding more charcoal, wood, and other flammable materials to it to keep the fire burning. She has a pile of the stuff in the circle with her.

Outside the circle is an empty palette and a hand-jack used to bring it here in the first place.

The way she’s almost dancing around as she builds up the fire, and the expression on her face, seems to indicate that she’s not in any particular distress.

On the one hand, it was a relief to see that Hibiscus wasn’t hurt or anything, though Ansel still had to question the wisdom of going out alone like this. It wasn’t like the lake was completely safe, after all... still, with a sigh of relief, he parked the vehicle nearby, not wanting to startle her, and walked toward the bonfire. He couldn’t help but wonder... was this some sort of ritual?

Well, only one person knew the answers to questions like that. And hopefully Hibiscus wouldn’t mind him showing up.

“Hey! Hibiscus!” he called out once he was within earshot, holding up one hand in greeting. Again, not wanting to startle her too much. “You look like you’re having fun there. What’s the deal with the fire?”
