i want to do a more proper analysis of this because it interests me as a potential aspect of a transfem egg ralsei read, but i feel like ralsei's hatred of flowery is being read as a very direct "because he sucks," and while i don't think it's inaccurate to say that he sucks, i don't think that's entirely why ralsei hates him. flowery is a darkner(-adjacent) who projects self-actualization very confidently, and ralsei tragically sees this as shameful and thusly feels a strong sense of shame regarding their own want for self-actualization. hating flowery, from what i can tell, is very much a way of expressing self-loathing for ralsei. and there's some irony here, too; flowery is a mirror to ralsei in a lot of other ways, devoted wholly to the lightners above himself, trapped in an archetype that he seems to take on largely for the approval of an authority figure who doesn't like that he's become a person, unable to truly live for himself. ralsei doesn't recognize this because flowery doesn't recognize this, and because they see only the want for self-actualization they feel so ashamed of, but his ending is a reflection of what their ending could be if they let their own fate consume them; in the end, only a simple object. it's interesting to me that in the end, for reasons ralsei cannot identify, ralsei finds themselves crying for his sake.

imo the thing with ralsei is that their arc is way too focused on identity to be about their presentation but not their gender. toby knows how to write gender non-conforming people, susie is literally right there, and at no point is her identity as a girl put into question; she never questions being "the girl", her identity as a girl isn't questioned by her or others despite her refusal to wear ribbons and her subsequent choice to wear them in a distinctly butch way, etc. if ralsei just aimed to be a boy who sometimes presents femininely... they already do. being a prince shouldn't be a problem then. like I genuinely do not understand how people can still question whether ralsei is trans when flowery calls them "princess" in that one scene; it should not even cross toby's mind to include this if ralsei's arc wasn't linked to their actual gender identity rather than just their presentation. there is an emphasis on people and things wanting or trying to be what they aren't or shouldn't be in this entire chapter. it's already a theme with kris wanting to be a monster, but it's undeniably linked to ralsei as well (hint: ralsei is so fucking involved in this chapter it's almost like. like they're affected by the themes? by god)

nothing is stopping ralsei from looking like a princess as long as they're the prince of the prophecy: case in point, ralsei is already gender-non conforming. ralsei's issue is that they want to "be something they're not", something that goes directly against the prophecy: a princess, at the very least sometimes. and because the prophecy puts an emphasis on gender ("the girl"), it makes it even worse that ralsei wants to depart from that.

I hope they are the prettiest teens ever I want them to hate each other's guts and I want them to deeply relate to the other while being immensely jealous. And then Kris is just caught in the crossfire. Also I like to think this is how a Susie/Berdly/Lancer friendship arc could be sparked.

I think something like this should be the "Susie does whatever the hell she wants regardless of what we choose because she quirky like that" of Chapter 5.
