Just finished writing my fifth short ghost story. It’s called “Ghosts of 921 Earthquake”.
It’s about a small family getting separated by a 7.1 earthquake that happened in Taiwan on September 21, 1999.

Thanks.
The above painting is a notebook cover painting using acrylics. I call it Orange Moby, inspired by the novel Moby Dick. Orange Moby carries a boat across the rough ocean. I decided that from now on I will sign my paintings with my brand name Aroseart78 just to be consistent with my social media profiles.
Aroseart78 is a mix of Aries and horse. My zodiac sign is Aries and my Chinese zodiac sign is horse. 78 is my birth year and favorite number. Other than painting Orange Moby today, I also went to a art show that consisted of many cartoon fine artists based in Taiwan. I did take photos, but majority of them are famous so I don’t dare to post photos of their paintings. In case they see my post and sue me.
It was a awesome show, my favorite paintings were of a fat boy hugging pets and robots. Those paintings were smooth paintings painted with acrylics. They were simple paintings, but strong stories. There was one with the fat boy hugging two robots that tells a story of how little boys like to play with toy robots. Too bad that I am a girl, I don’t really know much about robots. Or if a customer acts like she can.
This is my tribute to Frida Kahlo. Even though she became famous after her passing, she still was brave enough to paint her not so great life. I believed that despite her health issues, she tried her best to be the best person she can be. I admire her for her bravery to continue to paint and fight for her life against her health issues. I am not going into detail about her health issues, because other people has already talked about them many times.
Like Frida Kahlo, I have health issues too and I don’t paint about my health issues, because I want my paintings and drawings to give out positive vibes. I feel like painting my health issues is like pouring my miseries at people. I don’t want to do that, because my health issues were probably started by a wrong move on my behalf. I am not saying Frida is wrong for painting her unfortunate events, she and I just have different thinkings.
She wanted to document and share her unfortunate events, I want to share happy things to the world. Maybe Frida was teaching lessons to people in need so that they don’t have mishaps like her.
I miss living in America, because of all the art conventions I get to go. Shows like Comic con, Lightbox Expo and a new one that I found out today Milan Art Experience. Comic Con is for comic book artists and animators and illustrators. Lightbox Expo is the same. Milan Art Experience is for fine artists. During these conventions, you get to buy art from Artist Alley and go listen to panels. During the panels you can gather information about animation studios or comic companies.
I believe Milan Art Experience is a similar show to Comic Con except they are for fine artists. Also during big art shows like Comic Con and Milan Art Experience, you get to network with people and art collectors. I don’t know why the animation shows in Taiwan are unlike American animation shows, all they do is sell sell sell no panels. The only panels are in fine art shows. I think Taiwan artists can only talk to art collectors when they have solo or collaboration shows.
Like other artists I sketched in sketchbooks when I started learning art. I don’t know when I started illustrating fully colored illustrations in sketchbooks. Probably when I started learning to draw with colored pencils 5 years ago. Maybe it’s ok to have colored illustrations in sketchbooks, because then you will know what color to paint when painting on canvas. The famous art YouTubers paint in their sketchbooks to practice painting techniques.
Now with digital devices, some artists started sketching on iPads and smart tablets. Only a small number of artists are still sketching in sketchbooks. I am one of the minorities. I am drawing and painting traditionally to protect my eyes. Doctor said that my eyes are deteriorating, so I need to protect my eyes as much as possible. My friend Chu Chu who studied art in college and somehow choose to be a tour guide.
Artist statements are a important part of an artist opening art shows as well as telling cafes or galleries that you exist. In a artist statement you have to tell the galleries what you do, your experience and what you want to exhibit. I just sent off my artist statement to a art cafe and a gallery and hasn’t got feedback from any of them yet. I believe the art cafe will accept me, because they are also a entertainment cafe where they decorate their cafe with movie props. This cafe is also secret base for a famous Taiwanese movie director Wei De Sheng. He directed Cape #7 which was screened at Royce Hall inside UCLA.
I shouldn’t be over confident that the art cafe Realguts will accept me, but I really think if there’s a chance it would be from Realguts cafe. The other place that I sent my artist statement was Eslite Gallery inside Son Yan Creative plaza. Eslite Gallery is part of a big and famous books company Eslite. There current show is about whimsical painting.
Recently, designing monsters is my favorite thing. Today I went to a panel and workshop that talks about Asian monsters. There were 4 panelists and each of them talked about different aspects of designing monsters. This one lady talked about intellectual properties aka IP. She said that a successful IP need to have a big following and mutual feelings between artists and audience.
This month in Taiwan is ghost month, so there were many talks of ghosts. One guy said that if you are not married and have children, you will die a lonesome and wild ghost. Unless you adopt a child, then the child will pray to you and you won’t be lonesome and wild. People pray to ghosts during ghost month to prevent the ghosts from making people sick or give them bad luck. Ghosts will not cause trouble if they have places to go and eat.
After the panel and 40 minutes break there was a monster drawing workshop which is the above photo. During this workshop, the teacher talked more about monsters, mostly Taiwanese monsters and monsters from different parts of Asia like Japan and China. After Mr. Yeh’s lecture, everyone in the workshop started to pick up their pencils and draw their own monsters. While everyone draws, Mr. Yeah goes around the two big tables critiquing students’ drawings. Mr. Yeh liked my drawing a lot and said that I am a professional artist.
Networking after the Pandemic is hard for me, probably hard for other people too. Tonite, I went to a art show ending reception at Lutetia Cafe and tried to network with people. It was hard, because I couldn’t find topics to talk and sometimes the topics were not compatible with some people. Like when I talked about Paul Frank and Studio Ghibli to this lady, she didn’t know any of them. Maybe Paul Frank is not that popular, but I find it surprising that the lady didn’t know Studio Ghibli.
That lady likes art history, so I probably should have talked to her about Uffizi in Italy or the Renaissance. Either way I should have done some homework before going to the event. It was so much easier to network in Hollywood, because majority of the people were animators. The next art show at Lutetia will be about ceramics and I don’t anything about ceramics other than eating with them. So I need to do some homework about ceramic art before I go to the opening ceremony.
Finding a place to open art shows is kind of hard, because of the rental price, easy access by transportation and popularity. You can’t just find a random place to open art shows, because of the above factors. If the rental price is too expensive I would not be able to afford the place. If the area is not easy access by transportation, people would not come to the art show. Also, if the area is not popular people would not come to the art show either.
I am currently researching cafes for art shows, because people go to cafes more than galleries. So it’s easier to open art shows at cafes. Of course, I need to make my paintings interesting enough so that people would purchase them. In my two previous art shows, I chose random places and didn’t think about the above 3 factors. So my previous 2 art shows are failures. This time for the 3rd art show, I have to be more specific in choosing the locations.
Someone in a Facebook color pencil group asked how to find style. I answered to study his or her favorite artists’ styles. I got this answer from someone else and never applied myself, because I already found my style. Actually I did study my favorite artists’ styles, but couldn’t copy them exactly. Maybe I found my style long time ago and didn’t know it.
I don’t know how I found my style, but I got used to drawing and painting the style. One time I tried to copy Ten Hundred’s Art just to practice and it took me a while to get it 90% close to Ten Hundred. Only 90% likeness, because I am afraid of copyright infringement and get jailed. I don’t fully understand copyright laws, but I do understand the severity of breaking one of the rules. That’s why I try to create my own cartoon characters for my paintings. Sorry I am getting tired. I’ll write tomorrow.
