Nuribotoke / 塗仏 (an animated corpse with blackened flesh and dangling eyeballs) from the Hyakkai-Zukan, ca. 1737 by Sawaki Suushi. They are portrayed as similar in appearance to the Buddha but with largely bloated stomachs and occasionally having a catfish’s tail. #japan #myth #youkai

Love’s Not the Way to Treat a Friend
Love’s not the way to treat a friend. I wouldn’t wish that on you. I don’t want to see your eyes forgotten on a rainy day, lost in the endless purse of those who can remember nothing. Love’s not the way to treat a friend. I don’t want to see you end up that way with your body being poured like wounded marble into the architecture of those who make bridges out of crippled birds. Love’s not the way to treat a friend. There are so many better things for you than to see your feelings sold as magic lanterns to somebody whose body casts no light.
- Richard Brautigan

Ever heard of the Tarahumara? They’re a people living in the Sierra Madre Mountains of Chihuahua, Mexico, who’ve weathered centuries of attention by Spanish, French, and Mexican governments, but still hold on to many of their original cultural traditions. Just check out this woman near the village of Wawatzerare, holding her baby in a rebozo.
This shot was snagged by Father Luis Verplancken, a Jesuit who served in Chihuahua for decades, and whose collection of several thousand photos the SWC is fortunate to have.

I don’t want your love unless you know I am repulsive, and love me even as you know it.
