Extra Credit - hope it’s not too late for this! I’ve been scrambling, so I kept forgetting to upload it.
I really liked the way Vik Muniz got a little unconventional and used condiments in some of his paintings, not just because it’s a weird, neat idea, but also because it’s interesting and creative. So I decided to try it out for this project since it seemed fun, and also because I love food and making a mess out of food. I always planned on using liquid aminos and soy sauce, since they act like watercolors on paper and I just really like brown colors, and I knew I wanted to paint a portrait of someone since I’ve been wanting to paint one of my friends anyways. I decided to paint one of my friends when she was over one night and was talking about herself more than usual, about things that made me upset for her. With her expression, I wanted to show how genuinely peaceful and content she can be when she focuses more attention on herself. Then with the lower part of her body, I decided to paint a giant heart, which feels a little dumb in hindsight because it’s very hamfisted way of trying to say “she has a big heart,” but oh well. Around her, I wanted the background to look chaotic, since her mind is constantly running on new ideas. As far as details go, I defined her curls by drawing lines in the aminos using the butt end of my paintbrush, and to add to the chaotic parts, I sprinkled salt around the edges.

Extra Credit Assignment:
These ink blot paintings were inspired by the work of Hermann Rorschach. I am a psychology major and have personally researched his work using abstract ink blots as cognitive assessments for his patients. I wanted to recreate the aesthetic of his work while maintaining my own original touch, my goal being to create drawings that could potentially be viewed in different ways depending on the perspective of the one judging it. I was also interested in making an ink blot piece because it was one of the most interesting concepts discussed in lecture for me, as well as one of my most favorite art projects in studio. The concept of symmetry with the blots is so fun to play around with and explore to make different kinds of images. I wanted to have more time in studio to explore more of the ink blot art, so this assignment was the perfect chance for me to practice this art medium some more. In my attempt at creating ink blot art, my goal was to find a mix between the exercise done in studio and what Doctor Rorschach himself did. I experimented with different colors paint, however I found that my favorite pieces were the one’s done with strictly black paint with a great deal of water as to give off a more ink-like appearance.
The inspiration to draw Donald Trump turning into a Cheeto came from Charles Philipon’s “La Métamorphose du roi Louis-Philippe en poire”. Phillipon’s drawing of King Louis-Philippe transforming into a pear that was originally created in the satirical journal, La Caricature in 1831 as a way of rebelling against the king, and in turn creating a symbol for continued rebellion. Even though the production of the caricature was a considerably more daring move to make I still saw it as a fairly light-hearted jab at authority. Instead of choosing a random object to transform Trump into showing resemblance I was focusing on transforming him into a humiliating object that already symbolizes him to a fair amount of the population. People online have already compared Trumps spray tan orange skin to that of a Cheeto so I attempted to recreate a modernized and American take on Phillipon’s picture with that objective in mind. The goal of my drawing was to closely resemble the original while only changing the figure and object used. In the same four panel transition, I wanted to show the transformation and use a similar technical approach of using ink, but I used a ballpoint pen. I also wanted the image to remain monochromatic. Due to the characteristics of a Cheeto, a pen in orange ink was considered but eventually discarded due to my lack of ability with pens found in that color. I also considered simply using colored pencils to achieve the look but felt the boldness of using pen was desirable. Since the original drawing had a doodle quality to it I wanted to keep that nature in mind in my replication.

I took inspiration from the line artist John Franzen. Franzen is an artist that uses the small variation in line, due to human nature, to create works off art that are never alike. Each piece is accidental, there is no motive behind each line, the piece is shaped by the fundamental variation in line. I took this concept and changed it by introducing a starting point to shape the line and see how the piece would evolve as more lines were added. Franzen uses the edge of the paper itself as a start and end point. But I instead introduced an inorganic line in the middle of the page and used that as a starting point. Since I started in the middle the left side and right side of the paper are not connected. Instead the left and right side appear as ripples much akin to how water ripples around an object.
