CYCLE BURNING-MICROSCOPE
The cycle burning-microscope connects deepening to burning-cosmos-iced where I have already grappled with the heart of the life. Through the artistic execution of microscopic cuts of different life forms â including many trees â I get to the bottom of the unseen.
The studio of Thomas Girbl in St. Jacob expands over a hidden situated cabinetmakerâs workshop, on a peaceful place, between the fizzy âmill-brookâ and a fruit-tree meadow plucked by sheep with a view in the SĂŒd-Karawanken (mountains). His works pile up there in a small chamber and await their discovery, while in the big workspace the raw canvas waits for different processes. On gigantic tables it is mounted cleanly, painted on the scaffold and before fire-resistant background on a wide wall they are exposed to the fire, are undergone a branding, to get their âbrandâ.

TRANSMUTATION The vineyard as a bearer of the transmutation, that place where external and internal change takes place â water to wine. Stone terraces, the steps of the mountain, point the way as well as they guard this process. They themselves â now also part of the transmutation â become abstract linear forms, open the vineyard and thereby give an insight. For the viewer a thrilling exploratory expedition starts, an alchemy of Earth-Fire-Air-Light and Water, a world full of colours with hidden messages, returning figures, secret writings, beings and profiles. The vineyard â burned on paper â is the clearly visible valve and ultimative tool of this transmutation. OPENING TO THE EXHIBITION BURNINGPICTURES Euromed Clinic FĂŒrth, November 30th 2003 In Girblâs pictures nature is not only illustrated, but rather caught and impressed on the material, branded. The creative strength of the fire is always visible in burned tints. Nevertheless, in the centre there is the warm, yellow light of the flames themselves. Everything looks enlightened, it gleams. Even from the depth light still issues forth, makes the composition clear and lights it up as it come from the back. The colours of the elements join as well as horizontally and vertically drawn curves and lines. The latter look brushed, scraped, they turn and get through themselves, meet, cruise each other at central places, resolve and lose themselves, often beyond the image border. Sometimes they also return again, to move to the fire to warm themselves. (âŠ) (âArt and Competenceâ by Dr.med. Michael N. Magin) (via Thomas Girbl burning-pictures-art-gallery-collections » Euromed Clinic FĂŒrth near NĂŒrnberg)
OUT OF THE CATALOGUE âPOWER OF THE INNER EYE â 2002 The traces left by the baptism of fire are considered as the underlying principle of âTo die an to beâ an have thus become the central element of remembering and the return of the very essentials of life. The sources of light or columns of light that are depicted at the very centre of the picture, as well as the areas surrounding them which are captured in hues of blue (=water), red and brown (=earth) and which too reflect the power of light once â again broken into different shades of colours â can be interpreted as the stories told about the stream of life itself. (via Thomas Girbl burning-pictures-art-gallery-collections » Power of the inner Eye)
OPENING AND PRESENTATION OF THE CATALOGUE âPOWER OF THE INNER EYEâ Baptism of Fire â Traces of the Memory The fire as a creative medium in Thomas Girblâs pictures Concentrated light as a corpuscle, a source of light â or wave in space â a column of fire, a horizon of light â and also as fields of interferences are arranged in such a way in Thomas Girblâs pictures that the single depicted elements refer to each others and are made visible as shapes and colours. White ball-shaped areas, areas arranged as vertical or horizontal stripes or hatched areas symbolize the presence of highly concentrated light that stands for the power of fire. The light, broken by gentle matter as it meets material substances, is visualised by the beauty and brightness of the entire chromatic circle. The traces of fire stand for the traces of changes that are burnt into our memory and thus symbolize continuous change, the process of ongoing changes to which earth is permanently subject.
