Another task of ours is to rate our favourite brands in order of preferance. The following restaurants are rated according to the steaks they serve.

Reason I chose steak is because I am an absolute carnivore and I love a good steak. Assaggi is my first choice, particularly because I remember the steak I ate there was orgasmic!! Medium rare fillet served with a creamy truffle sauce, topped with sliced parmesan. Turn ‘n tender and The Meat Company are obvious reasons, they specialise in steak. I think I rated Turn ‘n Tender 2nd because I had a better dish there. The Grand was good, copious amounts of food! I do prefer a specialised dish that is pleasing to the eye, and buffet food is just for when you’re starving and don’t care about presentation. Papachinos don’t specialize in steak but I had a pretty good one there.

One of my tasks for varsity is to find a brand related to my blog, and do a quick review on it. So, first one that came to mind is Deli One.

 From previously working as a manager for one of their stores, I have a good knowledge of the brand and how customers feel about the food. Well, the level of quality of the food is impeccable. I know that all the ingredients used in the food are internationally imported. Deli One employees strive to deliver the best service to customers and the level of cleanliness in the stores is unreal. I know this because we spent hours after every working day making sure everything is spotless, thus scoring us above 90% for every audit!!

When it comes to customer reviews, “#foodporn #yummy #delicious” are a lot of the #’s used to describe Deli One’s food on Instagram.

Pear Soup with Pancetta and Blue Cheese

Avocado cake with lemon cream cheese icing.

  Ingredients

1 cup sugar

4 eggs

1 ½ avocados

2 cups self raising flour

  Icing sugar: 

Juice and zest of 1 lemon

2 cups icing sugar (depending on your sweet preference)

220g cream cheese

Sliced strawberries to garnish

  Method

Preheat oven to 180*C and grease a loaf tin

Beat eggs and sugar together with an electric beater until light, fluffy and doubled in volume.

Mash/blend/beat avocado well so that it is smooth and silky.

Sift and mix the flour into egg mixture and add together with the avocado. Fold through gently, scraping down the sides of the bowl to ensure none of the avocado goodness is left behind.

Pour into the loaf tin, even out the surface and bake in the oven for 40-45 minutes. (Insert a skewer/knife into the centre and if it comes out clean, then the cake is done.)

Allow to cool completely before taking out of the loaf tin and icing.

For the icing:

Mix together the icing sugar, zest, juice and cream cheese until you have a firm but smooth icing.

Garnish with lemon zest and sliced strawberries.

Chocolate Raspberry Delice

Last year I went on a trip to Athens, Greece. Among many things, the food and definitely sweet treats was an exciting experience for me. I of course overindulged everyday and had to wear my fat jeans on the flight home but is was worth it.

 This particular bakery was a feast for the eyes! It is something you wouldn't find in most South African bakeries.

Unfortunately I couldn't bring all these yummy pastries back home and so I did the most logical thing...stuffed my face with as much as I could fit! Pure gluttony but oh so delicious!

Went on a little excursion in downtown Johannesburg and came across this restaurant/deli called Ma Bertha's Kitchen. If you're looking for home cooked meals this is the place to come. Simple yet hearty. I found the interior of this place very old school and beautiful. Understated, nothing fancy and non commercial.

If you ever find yourself in that area of Joburg take a visit to this spot. Address is 26 Loveday St. JHB Central. (Between Fox & Main Streets)

Western Spaghetti

As one of our assignments for college we are required to make a stop frame animation. I came across this on youtube as I was searching for inspiration. There are plenty more. Definitely going to try one and I'll post it.

Took a drive through Kruger to this awesome picnic spot, Afsaal. Here they serve beef/kudu wors with pap and shieba. A South African favourite!

So here's to the start of my new blog. The following photo is some random facts about Italian food and drink. I find the Slow Food movement fascinating and I think more people should follow the movement. Over the next few months I will be posting photos, recipes and videos onto my blog of flavourful and mouth watering recipes, and of course, food art.
