i made this last spring a bit after my insurance denied coverage for top surgery a second time (since they denied it a few months before and i appealed, etc...)

i wanted to tear into the canvas and sew it back up so i made a painting around that. it’s about life size (though a bit weirdly proportioned) and mostly looks like me. this was my way of processing everything that was telling me the way i wanted to look was wrong or unnatural, or that this surgery is “cosmetic.”

I did end up getting coverage and i had surgery several months after i made this, which was years after i first decided i wanted top surgery in the first place. i’m incredibly lucky my insurance plan changed to one that would cover this surgery. i look different from this now, i have one scar that goes all the way across instead of two, but making this kind of acclimated me to how i’d look after surgery and gave me more confidence about it.
