I'm American, and I realized that I never made it apparent on where I stand with all the shit going on, and I feel like it's important that I make it apparent. Fuck ICE, fuck Trump, fuck AI, free Palestine. The shit that's going on in this country is absolutely heinous. I know that this post doesn't do much, but I feel like it's important for me to be obvious about my positions. I'll go back to posting my normal stuff after this, but I just wanted to get this out there.

Also fuck JKR. She sucks ass and the characters are mine now.

A break from my usual format and fandom, but I’ve literally seen no one else talk about this so.

I’m a big mystery fan, and I’ve been watching high potential as it’s been airing. Everyone’s talking about ships and I feel like everyone’s missing the kind of icky police brutality that happened? The white captain/nepo baby, who was promoted over the black woman who was also being considered for a promotion, beat up the only black member of the heist team. As far as I remember, the rest of the team were white guys. Was it an intentional to make the white captain beat up the only black guy, or was it a really really ignorant choice? Especially given the stuff they’ve been talking about in this season with Soto, Ava, and Daphne, it feels like a really big oversight. This might be a character choice that’s meant to warn against Wagner, but if it’s not it feels just icky.

Anyway, needed to talk about it cause it jumped out at me and I haven’t seen anyone else mention it.

Um, I didn't see that but maybe I just couldn't see that because in the final showdown/climax/whatever the lighting was kinda uncharacteristically garbage for this show. Also, if you're going to not just mention her name but bring up her race-related arcs maybe don't mis-race Soto as she's Hispanic not black so there's less of a parallel

The actress Judy Reyes is Afro-Dominic, so while I did misstep by not bringing up her Hispanic heritage, I didn’t “mis-race” her. I also did say her name later in my post. I’d recommend rewatching that scene. While I can’t say for sure if the guy Wagner beat up was the only black man on the heist team, I do remember that he was black, and having the white captain beat up a black man isn’t great, especially given the political climate of America rn.

I mean, I don’t know if that really changes anything? She’s still a WOC who was passed over for a promotion by a white man, who then committed an act of police brutality against another POC. Regardless, it’s two marginalized people and the same white man. I feel like the shows been pretty sensitive and thoughtful about race so far, so I’m hoping it’s actually something and not just an oversight.

What have you been writing? So cool that you are taking classes!

My main focus is characters! I like exploring character arcs and dynamics in my personal work. I like doing romances, slice of life, etc, but I also have a fantasy story and a couple of thrillers in the works. For my creative writing class, it’s mostly been short stories, which have been really fun.

For Lyra and Merula, most of what I’ve been writing has been character moments between them, just kind of exploring how their relationship develops over the years!

I had to think on this one for a bit but I think I got somewhere with it:

1: “Machine” by MisterWives and “Ancient Dreams in a Modern Land” - Lyra is brilliant, obsessive, focused, and very uninterested in how people view her (sometimes to her detriment) so both of those feel pretty good

2: “Like Him” by Tyler, the Creator - Her biggest motivator at the beginning is her brother, she never really stops thinking about him. She and her brother are also very similar so it kind of haunts her

3: “Allies or Enemies” by The Crane Wives and “P.U.N.K Girl” by Heavenly - it takes a while for Merula and Lyra to get on good terms, but once they do, their obsessive personalities make them both obsessed with each other :)

4: “It Could’ve Been Me” by The Struts - when Lyra settled into herself, she’s able to focus more on the present and is able to prioritize what she has, like her friends and family

Different than what I usually post, but I was doing some quick little environment studies that I was pretty happy with :) Environments are something I struggle with, so I was just doing a bunch of quick ones, these all took around 15 minutes

Hi, love your art and I want to know more about your MC and her relationship with Merula :)

Hi, thank you so much!! I’ll try to keep it short cause I can yap, but if you want to hear more let me know!

My MC is named Lyra, she’s a ravenclaw. She’s very intelligent, very good at solving puzzles, picking up on clues, very detective-esque. She’s also incredibly stubborn, determined, and impulsive. She’s gotten very good at ignoring peoples opinions of her, since there’s so much chatter around her brother. Unfortunately, that also means that she can ignore her friends’ opinions when they don’t align with her goals. She can be obsessive and single minded, but she’s very passionate and nonjudgmental, which tends to draw people to her.

In my version, Merula’s parents are big celebrities, but not for any good reason. I’ve described them as kind of the kardashians of the wizarding world, and everyone thinks Merula is just like her parents, which she hates. She’s really desperate to prove herself. When she starts at Hogwarts, she tries to push all the negative attention onto Lyra, but Lyra just shrugs it off, which pushes Merula to be a bigger asshole. Like Lyra, Merula can also be really obsessive and determined, and the two of them are both kind of like weirdly obsessed with each other even when they hate each other. Merula is also very thoughtful, she thinks things through and can usually see what the best solution would be. When she and Lyra work together, Merulas good at stopping Lyra from going with her first instinct.

In my mind, they hate each other up until the end of 3rd year, when they’re forced to work together and Merula realizes that Lyra doesn’t look down on her. They form like a weird sort of friendship that kind of develops in secret for a few years until they eventually end up dating in their 7th year. That was a lot so if anyone actually reads this all, I appreciate it! I’ve got a lot more ideas for them, but this is kind of like a basic overview.

I saw Hadestown(!!!) again on Sunday, and it reminded me of the theater AU I have for some of my characters! There’s like lore and stuff for all of them, but I just wanted to draw them in their costumes :)
