By me. Self Portrait.
Octavio Paz, ‘The House of Glances’ (selected lines), A Tree Within (trans. Eliot Weinberger)
"Oh, Maelstrom
The pain behind your large red eye.
Tempestuous Rage
Your vortex a force like that of a bottomless sea.
['The heart is an eye, create in order to see']
Oh, the centuries pass,
Only a billion lightyears' worth of tears stream down your face,
They gravitate to drip on my face.
All at once, at last.
The diamonds that trickle through your endless atmosphere.
The collection of moons that warp your emotions;
Pull my heart apart like a ripe fruit in air.
['The real growth is happening in the silence of your own heart.']
I will let the fire consume me.
Oh, la tristesse dorera toujours; a vacuum of irregular shapes.
The eyes bleed out like a rushing waterfall.
Oh, mon coeur s'est larisé ouvert dans ma poitrine."
By me. 2 lines are sourced from some of my favorite works.

Terroir (pronounced tare-WAHR) is a French term referring to the unique combination of natural and human factors—specifically soil, climate, topography, and farming practices—that give agricultural products like wine, coffee, and cheese a distinct "sense of place" and flavor. It implies that the environment dictates a product's character.
In the Southern Reach series by Jeff VanderMeer, we get to learn about this term describing Area X. Whitby, a scientist of the Southern Reach, used this term to explain how Area X works. To describe that Area X was bound to occur, and how the Terroir of this anomaly reacts and functions.
I also wanted to include ideas from Whitby's Terroir, and the perspective of him as The Rogue killing off the biologists that harm these creatures. Whitby writes a poem, after hearing about the plans to exterminate the rabbits after they mutated on Failure Island. Whitby's Rage against animal abuse, triggering his transformation into The Rogue. The rabbit as a predator in Area X, and what it might look like years later, having adapted to the extraterrestrial terrain.
In Absolution, the rabbit experiment is linked to Central. In an attempt to spy on the S&SB, and overload the border anomaly with the intentions of short circuiting Area X, the white rabbits are used as test subjects. Throughout the Southern Reach series, we read a lot about the rabbits, their longlasting impacts on the island, and in the Southern Reach. The rabbits had been injected with a serum, Serum Bliss, that would make them turn into gold. These rabbits are affixed with cameras, and forced to enter the doorway to Active Area X. During the experiment, horrors occur, and the rabbits undergo many mutations.
This is my take on how the rabbits would continue to adapt in Area X. I think that the ones that survived would adapt to this new landscape. Or perhaps what the Mudder saw.
This piece was inspired by my struggles with having an Aries Venus. I have a lot of trouble containing my feelings, as they seem to rush out of me. Impulsive. In love, I am always peeling pieces of my heart open to let that love pour out. A fragile strawberry. In my culture strawberries are called Wuttahimneash, or Heart Berry. It is also sometimes said that splitting a strawberry with someone is about sharing love. I have a habit of doing this with my own strawberry heart. The rushing waves of love pouring out like a waterfall. My idea was to split the anatomical strawberry heart, and to have this burning hot gushing emotion pouring through it. The heart is ablaze, on fire with passion. The heart bleeds when in love. You share pieces of yourself in hopes that this love will return. You can also never take back that love, but it will always be a part of you, even if it's in pieces. A broken heart still pours, as the heart is wide open. The fire is a representation of an aries venus. The water is a respresentation of a pisces sun. The theme of these placements is great strength, not weakness in love. I am boiling hot water, scorching the path of life with my passion. I am ultimately fueled by this love, and I can't stop as my heart is wide open. A sacred heart oozing out. I also wanted to understand these placements more, and they are in conjunction with one another. Working together if you let yourself become immersed in it.
