His flattery earned him a little smile and a roll of her eyes; he was cute. “You wouldn’t, even if you wanted to,” she promised and her eyes glowed red, her shadow growing larger and darker until it resembled a massive hound.

However, as quick as it happened, it faded. It may have simply been a trick of the light. Blue eyes danced with mischief as she smiled brightly, hands sliding into the pockets of her jeans. “Am I still lovely?” she teased.

Interesting. Last time he’d seen something like that, it was a god of an old religion who wasn’t happy. He had no idea what or who she might be. Well, he could determine that she wasn’t a regular human, that was clear enough.

“You are correct, I wouldn’t, my mother raised me to not to hit people.” She hadn’t said anything about stunning a person, so he felt that was a fair plan when the need arose. The shadow had abated, it was had that dreamlike quality where you knew you’d seen something, but once it was gone, you lost the ability to define it, like the shadow of a bad dream.

“You are, but like many lovely things, there seems to be some danger behind the beauty. So may I ask why you want to be hit in the face?"

Life was full of first and this was certainly one of those moments for Gabe. The woman seemed very intent on him throwing something at her face. That seemed like a bad idea.

“I just can’t bring myself to possibly mar something so lovely.” Maybe throwing compliments would work. He put his hands in his pockets, shrugging, but also feeling for his wand, in case she really did want to fight.

Yup. The black had been a good choice. Unfortunate that Gabe had had to see her in her less than ideally clothed state, but good that he’d been there to make the recommendation…? The alternative was going to be just taking what she could find and getting the heck out! Finding out that the closet happened to belong to the wizard she’d met by chance made things only slightly less awkward.

“Hey now, I mean, I could have been a really big scary guy, Or a bigger, scarier lady.” Molly could think of several of those, for both genders and a few that were neither. “I guess actually seeing who it is does take a bit of the fear of the unknown out of it. Though, I have to ask…. if you were going to get a dog, what sort would you get? You don’t exactly look like a dog person.” For some reason, she could see maybe cat person, but then the dander in the fur would probably do horrible, awful things to the books that she’d seen from the corner of her eye while passing through his front rooms.

Not to mention create the need to vacuum all the time, which could be hit or miss depending on the day.

She was deflecting, and knew that she was deflecting. It was much easier than acknowledging how strange it was that she’d managed to wind up there. Of all the apartments in Chicago…. Sitting down across from him at the table, she reached out and slid the cup of tea over towards her, inhaling the scent of it. Very different from coffee, the hot beverage was more mellow smelling, somehow.

“Uhm… sure. I’ve never had a pan ducle before.” She did try, but she couldn’t keep her eyes from flickering quickly over his form, giving him a fast but thorough once over. “I can see why she’d be worried. I can very safely say that if you came over to my parent’s house, my mother would try to feed you everything under the sun. And she’s really a rather amazing cook, so believe me… you’d want to eat what she shoved at you.” Reaching out, she took one of the cookies, noting that it didn’t smell like the typical cookie one found in Chicago. “Where are these from? Which, I guess would then be followed up by where are you from? I’m pretty sure I have an idea of where all the good bakeries in the area are.”

Taking a nibble of the edge of the cookie, she glanced down at the tea, wincing just a bit. “So…. you’ve heard of the fomor, right? I… uh… may or may not have something of a nemesis within that particular group, and I may or may not have messed up one of their operations today. Sure, Veiling and getting out of dodge would have been easier, but they may or may not have been looking for my particular blend of magic.” Which explained why her own clothing was in a somewhat holey state. “And, that may or may not have necessitated finding something different to wear.”

A cautious sip of tea seemed to make her realize how that sounded. Blue eyes widened as she met Gabe’s gaze ever so briefly before shifting just a bit. “Don’t worry though. I made sure I wasn’t followed” 

An image of large vikings of both genders popped into Gabe’s head, clearly the only group of people he could quickly imagine being larger and scarier than Molly.  While she was very lovely, strikingly so, their handshake a while back had given him a clear warning of her power.  Rather handy, those handshakes, in one’s personal risk management planning.

“A dog? Hm, I’m not sure, one that travels well? Or that I could get someone to watch while I was out of town.  Perhaps I should look into a large menacing cat instead. I have always been fond cattle dogs. And poodles do make me smile.”  He shrugged, sipping his own cup of tea.  She was fidgety. Had she been like this when they met? Perhaps.  Perhaps it was simply her way of being. She’d mentioned her activities, which, while vague, had given him the impression of someone who was comfortable with physical conflict.

“They are from my mother, except those rosa colored ones, those are from a bakery down the street from her home in Mexico City. It is easier to pick treats up from mama when you don’t have to pass through airports and customs. She even sets some aside for the fae fee; we might be making some of the beings along my way in the NeverNever fat on treats.” He smile at that, his trips were much easier once he’d realized that he could trade for unmolested passage with a few cookies. His mother had been thrilled that they loved her baking. “I grew up in Mexico City, much of my family still lives there. I am a professor of archeology at Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México. I am here in Chicago for a few years as a visiting professor.”

He ate one of the cookies and sipped his tea as she finally came to the explanation of her presence and need for clothing.He sat back in his chair, cup to mouth, index finger tapping absently on the side of the cup. Gabe was aware of the Fomor, who they’d been and what they were now. They weren’t his area of expertise, but he’d learned about their history during his schooling.He also knew they did not always seek to make friends with other divine beings.

“I am familiar with them. You select dangerous opponents. But it also seems the Fates were looking out for you. This place escapes their notice thanks to help from Those who do not care for the Formorians. They will not look for you here.” He did believe with absolute certainty that she was meant to end up here, and that meant the danger she’d avoided was great, and it also meant that grand plan still had things it wanted from Molly. “You are welcome here as my guest. But if you plan on coming by often, I’d ask you leave a set of clothing, I do not have enough pants to share often.”

Gabe tried to hold still, he really did. He watched intently as the other man carefully cleaned up the injury on his arm, clearly taking care to be gentle. The thing was, Gabe wasn’t quite certain if his little twitches were to the occasional sparks of pain or the feeling of the man’s finger tips on his skin.

“Thanks for taking care of this, I guess I should be more mindful of what I’m doing in the future,” he smiled at the man.

“I’m Gabe, I’d shake your hand, but,” he wiggled the fingers of the hand that was supposed to be still.

The English language had a word for just about everything and anything, but if there was a specific word for what landed a person in the closet of a home they’d never been to without an invitation, Molly had no idea what it was. There was a derivative of a certain four letter word she could think of that would also adequately describe said situation, but it didn’t seem very polite. So, she went a different route. “Uhm…. I guess you could say it’s just been a super craptacular kind of day?”

She’d already said that, and she knew she had, but she wasn’t really sure there was another explanation for it outside of the T word, and anyone one said “trouble” that always made whomever they were speaking to think that something awful was waiting just around the corner. And there wasn’t. Probably.

Glancing over towards where he indicated for the less see through shirt and locating it, she took as much of a step away from his wand as she could, thereby letting him know she wasn’t going to hinder him in any way from taking it back. “I promise I’ll get them both back to you. The pants don’t really have the right fit for me.”

Once Gabe had left the confines of the closet, she turned and picked up the black shirt he’d recommended. Folding the one she’d taken off and replacing it first, she slid the new one over her head and found that it was more comfortable than the last, with the added benefit of hiding the fact she’d chosen her undergarments poorly for the day. “Uhm… sure! Milk sounds great!” It did. Molly was more of a coffee sort of girl, but the milk sounded really good.

Bending to gather the clothing of her own that had been deposited unceremoniously in a pile on the floor, she headed back out the kitchen. Running a hand through pale blonde hair, trying to get it into some semblance of neatness. “Thank you,” she started, followed quickly by, “I’m sorry. I really was hoping to be gone by the time the person who lived here made it back. Kind of funny in the not ha-ha sort of way that this happens to be your place rather than some completely other random person’s place. I, uhm…. guess it’s kind of good that we met before, huh? I won’t say this is any less awkward, but it could always be worse.” Her eyes shifted over towards the tea that Gabe was busy brewing. “What sort of tea is that? It smells good.” f

She looked more comfortable in the dark shirt, certainly less self conscious. Gabe knew he certainly felt less self conscious now. Molly was a strikingly beautiful woman in a way that was a touchy otherworldly.

“I have to say I prefer knowing who burgled my closet. Otherwise I’d be left to wonder, get new locks, and maybe invest in a dog. I feel that it is good that we’d met before,” he let that comment trail off. The thought of finding a younger woman who looked like Molly in his closet would have created a storm panic and stress that he potential had a student in a state of undress in his home. That would be bad.

“The place I purchased it from called it ‘International Tea’ which means it is a black breakfast tea that is not English or Irish, which maybe are trademarked? It is slightly more floral than those two. Here,” he handed her a cup of tea with milk in it. “Pan ducle? My mother made them and sent them. She worries that her son does not eat enough,” he smiled as he held out a tin with an assortment of cookies and pastries. he had snagged a biquet for himself. Sitting down at small wood table, he motioned towards the other chair.

“So, aside from it being a craptacular day, what brings you to my closet?” He was curious and felt since she’d be walking out of her in his clothes, he should get some sort of explanation. Seemed fair.

She was still rubbing at her forehead, grimacing slightly at the tender feeling of the skin beneath her fingers, when she heard her name. To be fair, Molly hadn’t gotten a good look at the guy before something metallic and stick-like had hit her in the forehead, but the voice sounded familiar. Her eyes dropped down to the general area where she’d last heard movement, the runed stick thing now very obviously a wand. Well, crap. That would make things even stickier, especially if he decided to start throwing spells. 

The thought of pulling power in to defend herself crossed her mind briefly, however, she refrained as it didn’t feel the familiar sounding man was doing the same. “Uh…. yeah?” she replied somewhat hesitantly, unsure if it was really an answer to what sounded like her name, or what sounded like a question. 

“Both, I guess?” 

Blue eyes moved back up to Gabe as she lowered her hand from her forehead, both arms moving to cross her chest. “Well…. I wouldn’t necessarily say ‘trouble’ is the right word, but I’ve been in less sticky places.” Flashing him an overly bright and entirely too innocent smile, she shrugged, keeping her arms crossed over her chest. “How about you? This is… really awkward, by the way. You, uhm…. don’t mind if I borrow these,” she indicated the pants and shirt, “do you?” 

“What is the word you would use that lands you in the closet of house you’ve never been in before that you entered without an invite?” He was curious, maybe there was a word for that and he just hadn’t learned it before. But he was also feeling pretty certain that the correct word was trouble.

“There is a black shirt in there that is less transparent, I would recommend that one. And borrow, yes, but I would like those pants back. I will wait for you in the kitchen.” He stepped forward, reclaiming his wand. He felt bad about throwing it, but no point in leaving it about. He tucked it into his pocket and headed out.

The break would give her a chance to change and him a chance to mentally regroup. He hadn’t warded his place here because, well, in part he figured no one would pay him any mind. And he was being a bit lazy about it. That’d certainly change. The larger issue was why Molly was in his house in the first place. The lack of clothing also raised questions. Chicago was generally not a place where one walked around nude, too cold and too puritan. He put hot water on the stove and prepared a pot of tea. He put some biscuits on a plate. He’d always tried to stay out of trouble, but those days were gone, too much haunted and hunted the magical these days.

“Do you take milk in your tea,” he called out to her.

She’d had the time to pull the undershirt over her head, so at least she was wearing something other than just a bra with the pair of borrowed pants. Not that the look itself was great. Molly had rather not wisely chosen a black bra for the day, so it was rather clearly visible beneath the white undershirt. But, hey! Something was better than nothing at all. 

She sensed more so than heard what she assumed was the man who lived in the apartment’s agitation and growing sense of suspicion. Not so much nervousness, which was kind of nice . That meant that he might not go off half cocked and decide to shoot first and ask questions later. Of course, that also meant that he could be cool as a cucumber while he shot first and didn’t bother with any enlightening discourse to explain the events of how things had come to be. 

The ever present question of “magic or no magic?” had sprung to her mind, the rapidity of the man’s approach leaving very little time to try to determine what to do. Naturally, the Mantle was screaming that she should hit the actual resident of the apartment full force in the face with everything she could muster to prevent any sort of personal injury. The more rational and less cold (no puns intended!) side of Molly told her that was probably not such a good idea. The threshold of the place was already preventing her from summoning anything resembling maximum strength, but it also was just poor manners. And, after all was said and done, she’d been raised better than that. 

Turning as she felt him nearing the closet, her hands raised to show that they were completely empty of any sort of anything that might be used as a weapon, Molly’s mouth opened to say something witty. Okay, it wouldn’t have been nearly as witty as something a certain other wizard she knew might have come up with, but it would have, hopefully, caught the man’s attention, and put him a little more at ease. 

What she’d been about to say was forgotten as she was caught completely off guard and hit in the forehead by what seemed to be a metallic stick. She hadn’t really gotten a very good look at it before it pegged her right between the eyes. It was a good throw, really, and probably would leave a bump or a bruise later. Egads, that was going to be just lovely. 

“Ow! Okay, look… I’m sorry!” One hand shifted position to rub at her forehead where the wand had made contact, her eyes squinted shut. “It’s been a real crapper of a day, okay? I swear, I’m really not looking for any sort of trouble…”

Throwing his wand had been an impulse move, one that reminded him actions made on impulse often turned out to be a fairly poor choice. This was no exception. Gabe was an excellent wizard. In school and as an apprentice, he’d excelled, gaining his wizard status at a fairly young age. But his skill was in thaumaturgy, not evocation. Which meant he was not great at combat magic, he wasn’t even good. He had a few spells, but the only one he could call to mind would probably end with his house on fire.

Wait, the closet lady looked familiar.

“Molly?”

"¿Son esos mis pantalones?“

There were a lot of questions to be asked in the moment, but at least it wasn’t a burglar in his house, just a lady with no bra.

He quickly averted his eyes upwards.

“Are you in trouble?”

Thank God for people who didn’t lock their homes every time they left! It wasn’t idea. It wasn’t perfect. The only upside was that because the door was already unlocked, she couldn’t get hit with a breaking and entering if she were caught. She hadn’t been invited in, which meant that she wouldn’t be at anything resembling full power if she ended up being followed, but between the Veils she’d thrown and her quick thinking, she was pretty sure she’d successfully given those trailing her the slip. 

Being in public spaces and all, it wouldn’t have been the cleverest of moves to hang around and try to get information out of them. Whether they were human, or fomor, or something else, she really didn’t know. All she knew was that she didn’t really want to end up pulling a Harry in broad daylight. 

Huh. Pulling a Harry. Was that even a thing? As she ghosted through the place, moving as quietly as she could, she looked for signs of possible inhabitants. So far, it looked like one adult, no kids, and no one was home. Perfect! As much as she hated the idea of borrowing someone else’s clothes, she really did have every intention of bringing them back. She knew where she was, well, more or less, so how hard could getting the items back really be? 

Overthinking again, Molly, she told herself, reaching what appeared to be the master bedroom. Guys clothes. Only guys clothes. Funny, the place hadn’t really looked like a bachelor pad. There’d been no pizza boxes or wing containers, empty beer bottles or red Solo cups laying abandoned and discarded on the floor. Come to think of it, she hadn’t remembered seeing a television, either. Shit.… She’d been too panicked to think about checking for wards, though she didn’t remember any going off? That only meant one thing. She needed to find something that would fit, or fit well enough, and get the hell out. 

Whoever the guy was, he had pretty decent taste in clothing. Nothing too terribly top of the line, but the cut and fit all looked as though he’d been pretty particular about what he’d been buying. His waist was almost the same size as her hips, though the pair of brown pants she’d pulled on did fit a little more snugly than she’d like. Some people would say that a woman’s butt looked good in men’s pants. Molly wasn’t sure this was the case, but she didn’t really have the time to be choosy, either. 

The walk-in closet revealed a lot of dress shirts, and some undershirts. She supposed an undershirt would have to do unless she wanted to look like she was modeling her sexy professor outfit for Halloween early. She was holding one of the undershirts up for sizing purposes when a sound near the door caught her attention. Well, crap. That meant she’d need to have some of plausible explanation that wasn’t a complete lie for a hot, half dressed woman in some random dude’s closet.

It’d been a long day. Nothing too crazy, but long. His open hour sessions had been full, students kept showing up, and even with his PhD student assisting, there wasn’t enough time to handle it all. The students were split between trying to recover a failing grade or the ones who wanted a perfect grade, and, he suspected, his approval and attention. Silently he thanked his choice long ago to never even ponder a relationship with a student. Or person of student age. It made all the efforts a bit easier to deal with.

He opened the door and paused. The tingle of his entrance welcome didn’t happen. He always set that, to see if someone had come in. He was better at doing that then he was locking the door. Still, the door had opened at some point. Stepping into the house, he didn’t see anyone or anything. Still, he snagged his wand from the side table. Nothing seemed to be amiss in the apartment, all his possessions were still there, so not a robbery. Maybe he’d forgotten the ward?

Walking through the house, he almost felt like it was all his imagination. Then, as he got close to his room, he realized it smelled like a woman. That was defiantly not normal. He went in cautiously.

“Hello?  Who is here?”

He may have said all of that, but clearly wasn’t totally sold on the idea of someone actually being in the house. So when he saw the woman, he panicked, threw the metal wand at her head, and jump back into a fighting stance. Ok, now the day was trending into a bit crazy.

“Hmm…. huh… what?” Molly was startled from her thoughts by the question, then shook her head. “Nothing, really. I was just thinking.”

For once, Molly was glad that she’d paid attention somewhere to have remembered that rather important fact. She was far better versed now in many different subjects, thanks to the tutelage of the Leanansidhe, but there was still quite a bit out there for her to learn. Nevertheless, the fact that an actually smart person was acknowledging what she’d said, and not disagreeing with it, felt kind of nice. “I mean, sad as it is, that makes sense. If someone were to ask me what certain things were like, then ask someone else not immersed in those things, I would imagine that our answers would be kind of different.” Okay, very different, but that sort of went without saying. Why wouldn’t it be the same for anything else? Just how “savage” had those savage cultures been, really? The Lady would have put good money on those old timey cultures having many more facets than the history books would otherwise lead people to believe. 

Blue eyes lit as she regarded Gabe from across the table. She was already trying to calculate in her mind where in the library the special section would be located, and just how hard it would be to bypass the wards that were most definitely in place to keep curious people, like herself, out. Flashing him a bright smile, she nodded once. “Right. Restricted section, check. Sadly, it doesn’t sound like an invisible cloak will do much good if a charm is needed. Besides,” her expression fell just a little, “whoever said i was out to cause mischief? I’m actually more interested in some of the more accurate histories that might be found there.” 

Everyone and everything had secrets, and if there was one thing that had been drilled into her head, it was that knowledge was power. The questions that she had weren’t likely to be answered if she just asked them, but if she had some sort of backstory, even if it were wrong, the odds of getting the truth were much higher. 

Patiently, Molly watched the man while he processed what she’d said, her own mind backtracking over every word to look for double meanings that might be uncovered. To do what he did, Gave was clearly a clever man, which meant that if there were any holes in her explanation, he’d likely find them. She could almost feel the wheels in his head turning as he tried to piece together the puzzle that had been laid out before him. 

To say that she’d found purpose in what she did wasn’t inaccurate. Neither was it inaccurate to say that it was a path she’d chosen. To say she enjoyed it, well, that was entirely different. Taking the Mantle of the Winter Lady had come with various rewards, yes, but was it actually rewarding? Not in the conventional ways that one might expect. Reaching out, she took the card from Gabe, eyes flickering to the black print on the white. “In a way, we play with all the other children in the box.” Yes, that was a “we”. As a Council wizard, he also got to help fortify the walls of the sand castle. “Some of the other kids are more otherworldly and some of them have their own friends that they’ve brought to hang out and watch their backs. Some of them aren’t very nice to other kids on the playground, but they’ve agreed to play nice while in the sandbox. As far as being thrown out…. eh….” she winced a bit, and considered very briefly in her mind what would happen if the Council decided that working with Winter was no longer in everyone’s best interests. Yes, it would place Molly in a very awkward position, but if Winter were ousted, chances were high that Summer would leave as well. And then things would become really interesting. “The Council likes to wave it around, but at the end of the day, it needs the other kids it plays with.”

Not that any of the higher ups would ever admit to that. Her eyes lit as she smiled brightly at Gabe once again. “I will definitely keep that in mind. There have been some things lately that have required more attention. Anyone willing to help is always welcome.”

So she clearly was involved in the ongoing conflicts. And most likely not in a traditional role. But what was a traditional role anymore? Warden? Even that role had changed, going from a cop working on prevention and enforcement to more of a firefighter, reactionary to disasters that threatened to burn out of control. He wasn’t a warrior, it wasn’t his skills set. But he was a fighter. And so was she, even if how she fought wasn’t clear. Yet.

“I agree, though at times sometimes the Council needs reminding that the sandbox is not only theirs, even if they wish it so.” He stood up, slinging his bag back over his shoulder. “It was a pleasure to meet you, Maggie. I hope our paths cross again.” He smiled and gave a small incline of the head, then took his leave. But even as he left the store, he knew she’d hold his interest for a long time.
