Story 10

Today I got a photo of gold necklace pendant (a birthday gift from client to his son). The pattern was designed by me, and the effect is pretty good: According to the zodiac year and the constellation month, the client wanted to have 2 elements - Dragon (Eastern culture) and Aquarius (Western culture), which also means peaceful and auspicious on pendant. We know that dragon is very large, not suitable for getting out of the little bottle, and when it wraps around the bottle, it looks like a snake, losing the momentum. In order to fully reflect the dignity of the dragon, I put it alone at the top of the picture, and the dragon's face is also painted more gentle. Below is the treasure bottle. In order to increase cultural connotation, the bottle was placed upside down, and water splashed out, like five little pearls, symbolizing "five blessings."An angel is added in front of the bottle to guard together with the dragon. Between dragon and the bottle, there is auspicious cloud, which symbolizes the "lucky clouds". In the back of the pendant, I used a special Chinese word 龘[dá], which is composed of three dragons, representing great flying.Thanks for reading my story. 今天看到朋友定制的金项链吊坠照片（给儿子生日礼物），图案是几个月前专门请我设计的，因为效果不错，顺便与大家分享心得：按照生肖年和星座月，吊坠需要同时出现一条龙（东方）和水瓶（西方）俩文化元素。而龙一般体量很大，不太适合从瓶子里钻出来，而缠绕着瓶身，又有点像蛇，失去了应有的气势。为体现龙的尊贵，我把它单独放在画面上方，龙的表情特意安排温和些。图案下方是宝瓶，为了增加戏剧性和文化内涵，瓶身被倒置，水花溅出来，好像五颗珍珠，象征“五福临门”。瓶身前增加一个天使，和龙一起守护小主人。在龙和宝瓶之间，绘有祥云，象征“平步青云”。吊坠背面，还有一个龘[dá ]字，由三个繁体字的龙组成，代表腾飞的样子。

Story 9

Many people ask me how to train speed drawing.  In addition to the accumulation of a lot of stage sketches, my little secret is to draw on the bus. If you usually meet a Chinese lady with a pen and a notebook on the bus in Riga, it's probably me. The bus is a microcosm of society, carrying different people and  stories:

Today, when two little school boys realized that I was drawing them on the swaying bus, they became extremely excited. Kept shaking their bodies, glancing curiously and shyly in the direction my seat...2019-1-8

Inside the bus you can easily see two different types of old people: some is eager to find a suitable place when getting on the bus, calling for young people to get up and give up their seats, and the other just stands quietly in the corner showing very polite attitude...So which type do u prefer?

速写故事 9很多人问我怎样训练度速绘画。除了大量的舞台速写积累，我的一个小秘密就是在巴士上画人物和风景。如果您平时在里加的公交车遇到一位中国女士带着钢笔和小本子，那多半就是我了。公交车就是一个社会缩影，承载不同的人，不同的故事，比如这两幅：

Story 8

I like the architecture of Riga.  On the birthday of the OLD EISENSTEIN (2017-09-05）my friend and I went pleinair to Elizabeth Street . The street is not wide, and there are many tourists. The blue building has a complicated façade, which almost dazzles us.  It started to rain  two hours later. The ink I used was not waterproof, and it was difficult to align freehand lines for scale, so my sketch could only be drawn partially!  My friend is more experienced  but still took several days to complete his oil painting.

OLD EISENSTEIN is the leader of the times! It's only that God is jealous of his talent! He has a brilliant career but didn't live long years. He was buried in the suburbs of Berlin which I also visited.

When I was translating his biography for Artplatz Art Gallery, I learned a lot about his life.  The gallery  has a 1:1 wax figure of him (customized in St. Petersburg), which is vivid!  In 2019-11-12 , I was invited to paint there...Texts I wrote in the sketch：

Grow the ideal wings and fly with the master.

速写1 2017-09-05我喜欢里加的建筑。在老爱森斯坦的诞辰日，我和朋友相约去伊丽莎白街写生。那条街不宽，很多游客围观和拍照，到处都是人。著名的蓝色建筑拥有繁复的立面，简直要把我们俩画晕了。大约两小时后开始下雨，我的钢笔墨汁并不防水，徒手的线条也很难按比例对齐，只能局部描绘，匆匆收场！朋友经验丰富，但他也花了好几天才完成自己那幅油画（被我收藏了）。爱森斯坦是时代的巨匠！他事业辉煌，人生跌宕起伏，逝世后葬在柏林市郊，我曾专程拜谒过。

速写2   2019-11-12在为Artplatz艺术画廊翻译爱森斯坦的生平时，我了解到许多相关资料，真的是天妒英才。那里有一尊他的1:1蜡像（圣彼得堡定制），细节惟妙惟肖！圣诞节前一个月，我受邀画下了“他”，附中文题字：插上理想的翅膀，跟随大师一起飞翔....

Story 7

This is one of the few digital works. I bought an iPad in 2016, and I did the first self-portrait, which took about 10 minutes.  The picture is very concise. My daughter said she likes this one the most. Now she is already able to use computer drawing proficiently. As for me, I still continue to sketch with pen and paper. The future world seems to favor young people, but if we maintain a positive attitude, we can still keep YOUNG.

这是为数不多的数码作品，2016年我买了IPAD，随手勾了第一个自画像，大概10分钟。画面很简洁，女儿说她最喜欢这张，现在她早已能熟练地运用电脑绘图，而我呢，还继续用钢笔和纸速写，未来世界似乎更青睐年轻人，但如果保持积极心态，我们仍然是年轻的，对吗。

Story 6

The poem I wrote in a sketch was created by Li Yu in Nan Tang Dynasty. Translation in English could be:

Beyond the curtain, the rain keeps pattering,

the spring on the decline.The satin quilt is not enoughto resist

 the dawn chill.

Forgetting I'm far, far away from home,

in a dream, I was carried away

with a short spell of pleasure.

Don't lean on the railing, alone—

the boundless view of rivers and mountains.

It's easy to leave, but hard to see again.

The water flows, flowers fall, and the spring fades.

It's a changed world.

The most famous phrase of this poem is "It's easy to leave, but hard to see again." I didn't expect it to become a truth!  There is a big tree in the painting, which has been standing healthily next to the National Art Museum in a graceful posture.  But the strong wind of 2020-09-17 blew it down, and I happened to be there at the last moment, across the cafe glass, like watching a horror movie.…

Below the sketch I also added an English sentence "What is the illusion and essence of life".

《浪淘沙令》李煜帘外雨潺潺，春意阑珊 ，罗衾不耐五更寒。梦里不知身是客，一晌贪欢。独自莫凭栏，无限江山，别时容易见时难。流水落花春去也，天上人间。李煜这首词中，最著名的就是“别时容易见时难”。没想到一语成谶！画中有棵大树，一直健康地立在国家美术馆旁边，姿态优美。但2020-09-17的大风将它刮倒，最后的瞬间我也碰巧在现场，隔着咖啡厅玻璃，像观看了一部恐怖片。我速写上还有一句英文“什么是生活的幻象和本质”。

Sketch of the premiere of "Turandot" at the Latvian National Opera.  PS: On November 29, 1924, the great musician Puccini insisted on writing when he was seriously ill. He hoped for another 20 days, but he did not complete the last paragraph of "Turandot" and died forever, and the play became his last opera.  Later, his students completed it on their behalf and brought the Chinese "Jasmine" melody to the world.(with signature of stage director and Antra)

 拉脱维亚国家歌剧院《图兰朵》首演现场速写。附言：1924年11月29日，伟大的音乐家普契尼病重时坚持创作，他希望再多20天时间，但是他未完成《图兰朵》最后一段，与世长辞，该剧也成为他的最后一部歌剧。后由他的学生代为完成，也将中国的“茉莉花“旋律带给了全世界。附：舞台导演赠言和Antra签名

Riga daily sketch

"In life, a casual sentence from a careless person may cause someone to wait a lifetime.” This is the inscription I sketched. Now I share a little story about the misunderstanding. I remember in a snowy day, the  sculpture in the back street of University of  Latvia was covered with snowflakes, lonely and beautiful. I was sitting in a corner cafe, looking at passers-by, thinking of a friend who lived alone, complaining on the phone that she wasted years of relationships and missed a (non-existent) marriage. She  is very rigorous, reserved and independent lady. The male protagonist is also my friend (single). From an outsider perspective, I know his character. His hobby is fishing and he loves joking too. Although the content of their separate chats is not clear, even if I have said sensational things  I wouldn’t take it seriously, but her character made herself take it seriously, and she was stuck in it for many years. The man obviously didn’t know, he was still talking and laughing, and continued his joke style, which made her very hurt... There are many things in life that are related to misunderstandings. 

“生活中，无心人随便的一句话，可能害有心人错等一辈子”。这是我速写上的题字，现在分享关于误会的小故事。记得那天下雪，拉脱维亚大学后街的雕像披着雪花，很孤独，也很美。我坐在街角咖啡厅，望着来来往往的路人，想起一位独居女朋友，在电话里抱怨她浪费了多年感情，错过了一段（根本不存在的）姻缘。她为人很严谨，矜持而独立。男主角也是我的朋友（单身），从局外人角度，我知道他性格，平时爱钓鱼和开玩笑，他们单独聊天的内容虽然不清楚，即使说过煽情的话，我都不会当真，但她的性格导致自己当真了，并陷进去了好多年。男方显然不知道，仍然谈笑风生，一直继续着他的玩笑作风，让她很受伤…生活中有许多事，都与误会有关。

Concert sketch

All the best wishes! Happy Birthday！

On the main stage, I finally met Raimonds Pauls, Latvia’s greatest contemporary musician.  That night was his concert  based on 20 romantic poems by Austra Skujina (suicide at age of 23 in early last century). The famous actress Veronika's high-pitched singing interprets the spirit of the poet, another beautiful actress expressing body of her. Amazing show.I was arranged sitting near the left side of the stage in the Chekhov Riga Russian Theatre (couldn't see master's face from that angle in sketch). After the concert, I tried to stand outside of dressing room nervously waiting him for a photo and signature !I remember deeply. HE was very APPROACHABLE while writing signature for me. I really admire…

2019年中国农历正月十五晚上，在契诃夫里加俄罗斯剧院主舞台，我终于见到了拉脱维亚当代最伟大的音乐家Raimonds Pauls，当晚是他根据上世纪初著名女诗人Austra Skujina(23岁自杀)创作的20首浪漫诗为蓝本的歌曲演唱会，他担任钢琴伴奏，著名女演员Veronika高亢的歌声演绎女诗人的精神，另一位漂亮的话剧演员表现诗人的身体，场面如泣如诉，亦梦亦真。我被安排坐在在舞台左侧附近，那个角度是看不到他的正脸的（所以速写都是背影），音乐会后工作人员把我带到化妆间外等签名和留影，心里真的挺紧张和兴奋！他见到我，却非常平易近人，没有一点架子！今天我与大家分享这个小插曲，以示自己对拉脱维亚伟大作曲家的敬意，衷心祝福他生日快乐。

Story 2019-10-18

Daughter and I were invited to  the Kuldiga Theater Festival. That day was also the 18th day of INKTOBER 2019 and topic was MISFIT. In the traditional sense,I may not be a good mother ,but she still loves me and tolerates me. The only thing I can do is  to encourage and inspire her talents, I really believe "gold shines everywhere".

Who is Mrs Mary Zhang?

Hong Ge Zhang (Mary) is Chinese architect, artist and curator, messenger of cultural exchange.Born in June 1967th in Beijing. Certified urban planner.

Co-Representative of Mikhail Chekhov Riga Russian Theatre, Co-Representative of IWS (International watercolor Society) Latvia. Fast drawing master-class and Chinese calligraphy teacher.

Mary is joyfully devoted to seeking a harmony in a fusion of eastern and western cultures, and actively practices the artistic concept of "feel the beauty, spread the beauty, be with the beauty" (感受美，传播美，与美同在). She has studied traditional Chinese painting, calligraphy and seal carving for 10 years under Yuan ji, a famous painter of Lingnan School. She has also participated in many international cooperation architecture projects while in China. In 2013 she completed the 138-meter landmark project "Guangzhou Circle" and moved to Riga, where she studied oil painting in LMA (Art Academy of Latvia) and local private studio. In 2016, she successfully curated the "Show you" comprehensive art exhibition with LCAC on Beijing-Latvia day. Since 2017 till 2020, she has participated in the Fabriano International Watercolor Exhibition for 4 consecutive sessions. She is good at theater and stage sketch especially. Her fast works have held solo exhibitions and displayed in international art events for many times.She successfully helped  Mikhail Chekhov Riga Russian Theatre performancing in China Dun Huang 2019.
