WIP ALERT

I think starting an art blog has made realize that I wanna be seen as more of a character animator than an illustrator. There's this practicality to uploading images rather than videos, though, and that's what's deterred me from posting my animated work; you can't glaze videos to protect them from AI (yet), and illustrations are just easier for me to make quickly (though I know this is tumblr and that time gaps between posts don't deter people). I love illustrating, obviously, but I realize that when I look back at my blog as a whole, I want it to like represent me and what I like doing rather than what I think is easier to do, if that makes sense.

Kinda just making noise here, more for myself than for anyone else. But yeah. Expect to see more animated work!

(The drawings above are called "thumbnails" and they're what animators sometimes make to either study movement and/or plan out an animation after they have their storyboards; they're like the roughs of Rough Animation)

Ideally, you'd see this at an ungodly hour at night, but if you don't then I guess just enjoy the poem!

I've accidentally memorized the first stanza of Albert Goldbarth's "The Sciences Sing a Lullaby" (2007) and I'm afraid my bonsai might be on the road to memorizing it too because I recite it to him as if though he's capable of falling asleep (my dioecious ginseng ficus bonsai is a him, at least for now until he decides to surprise me). The poem is not meant for plants (let alone trees, because we all know Ents speak very slowly and operate in Earth time rather than Human time, of which I think the former is infinitely nicer), but rather for you the reader when you're up at night because of your busy mind, which is moving very very fast with all those plans for the future and memories of the past.

Go to sleep.

I was gazing at Springtime by Pierre-Auguste Cot in the MET a bit ago and decided to extend the composition into a series of storyboards to show what I think would happen next (they fall over) :]

No, I do not pledge allegiance to the American military (though it would be hella cool to join in on those bromance-inducing sweaty wrestling matches with a ton of guys who could probably crush me in a moment because all that comes with joining the military but its ok because I'd get stronger and soon be considered one of them and we'll be trauma-bonded for life). Ignore what you just read in the parenthesis.

The previous two pieces that I posted are very much inspired by Jules Verne, but these guys are two characters directly from The Mysterious Island; Cyrus Harding holding the lamp while Gideon Spilett takes notes.

The thing that makes The Mysterious Island so good is that it has roots in the common thought experiment: "What if man was suddenly stripped from the modern world and thrust in the State of Nature again, and learned to survive from scratch?" Its a book that tests the information that its characters hold, seeing how well they can connect the pieces of technology that they were used to in the 1850s to the roots of their invention. It's also very good at revealing the "mystery" of the island, bit by bit, in a way that keeps you searching for clues. I have my own critiques on how it deals with man's relationship to nature as a member of the ecosystem rather than a destroyer of it, but I will probably be making more art about this book so I'll just pour my thoughts out in a future post.

For its day, the book was very progressive, since all the characters are Northern abolitionists allied to the Union during the American Civil War, and it has a prominent black character (Neb!) which Jules Verne makes clear is an important member of the cast, but I do think that Verne isn't very good at writing Neb's wants and needs as a human being (I have many thoughts on Neb's character and the way he's written, but I won't go on too long about them here so I will do that later). BUT I think that only makes this book excellent material for adaptation since its quite simple to reform (I know there's a movie, but I don't like the look of it so much...why is there a giant monster? that never happens).

Jack Wolfe and Morgan Dudley have such good chemistry. I couldn't resist sketching them.

I think it would've done me good to listen to the Hadestown soundtrack before having watched the show on Broadway, because it has made my temporal lobe favor the memory of Brandon Cameron's voice over the recording of Reeve Carney's (though this didn't happen to me with hearing Eva's voice after hearing KC De La Cruz live as Eurydice). I don't know, I think there's something rather stiff and awkward about Carney's Orpheus, which can be very charming, but it feels less charismatic next to the easy giddy-ness of Cameron's interpretation. It's so fascinating how a character can differ so much in personality based on who plays them. (I know that the personalities of the characters were written to be based on the original cast's personalities, making Carney's Orpheus the canon personality, but I was much more charmed by Cameron---obviously I still love hearing Orpheus' songs in the original soundtrack, though, and Carney is still excellent).

A good storyboarding teacher will teach you the art of retroboarding! It's when you take a look at a scene that you admire compositionally, and steal down a drawing of what's showing on the screen. it's called "retrboarding" because you're essentially revealing the film's storyboards by peeling away the production + post production elements.

I retroboarded a scene from this terrific action-comedy! Pirates of the Caribbean is very very very good. I will defend it to the death. I want to find more films that do comedy through action + situation as opposed to dialogue. If you know of any, please give me suggestions! :]

its amazing how you can read a bestselling book written by a critically acclaimed author full of the most sauced characters you've ever seen with a narrative about queerness and love and destiny and god set in a fantasy world with some of the most richly painted setpieces you've ever read and you just know in your heart and soul that all the weird gay people on the internet would utterly adore this and then you log onto tumblr dot com and it becomes immediately and horrifically clear that the fandom is six people in an empty room all utterly baffled as to why the room is so overbearingly empty

It's extremely strange to me that Imajica has no internet cult following. I might be forced to make lots of art as a marketing strategy to Fill Up This Empty Room. And also to finally give the book the visual development is deserves. Hm. Thinking lots of things.

Found some lovely slow-mo videos in 4k that show egrets interacting with one another and decided to study their forms. They have this really cool way of simply perching at the tops of trees, waiting with their necks curled. They're lovely birds.
