There has been a steady stream of articles about and by “reformed techies” who are coming to terms with the Silicon Valley ‘Frankenstein‘ they’ve spawned. Regret is transformed into something more missionary with the recently launched Center for Humane Technology.

So in light of fall break and lots of traveling. I’ve decided to accept ALL late Trainers, with no Safari Zone deductions. For those of you who turned them in on time, I have given you one extra Safari Zone. So if you were down to 1, you now have 2. 1. Make sure you are using either Chrome or Firefox and that you have a working webcam.

2. DISABLE ALL YOUR AD BLOCKERS.

3. Refresh the Browser.

4. Go to Live version of the site.

5. Find the filters you want, click “g” you’ll see a little flashing red dot in the top right corner. It’ll go for a bit, and then turn into a loading sign.

6. Then a new page will load with your final GIF, right click (or ctrl+click) and do Save File As...

7. Repeat.

Discussion Reminder

Hey, everyone! So this is the last trainer for Eisenhauer. I encourage you all to reread through your previous responses before discussion tomorrow. We will be split into small groups for the first half of discussion and then come back together as a big group. I’m looking forward to seeing how this goes!

To make up the work for the lecture I decided to research Hayley Morris. I saw her work on the slide and was amazed at how detailed and interesting the animation looked. Overall though there is not much information I could find about her. I learned that she attended The Rhode Island School of Design and is also now an adjunct professor there. She often combines multiple mediums including drawing, painting, textile, lighting and sound into animation to create beautifully bold worlds. On her website it states she uses traditional and experimental animation techniques such as drawing and stop motion, she also uses “unusual” materials in most of her prop work. The video I watched by her was called “Undone” and is the work she is most known for. It starts off very unsettling, and she uses sound to really push the mood. There is a sound byte of a swarm of bees among other unidentifiable sounds. I was very impressed by how the sound of bees worked to make me feel uneasy. The next scene is an old man on a boat fishing for various items. He pulls up a few items from the sea, but a rope from behind him acts as a living creature and devours the items. In the end of the video the old man is transformed into a younger version of himself and the camera zooms in on his face. The piece was overall very pleasing to the eye, I loved the use of fabric for the ocean and the figure was very detailed. The way I had originally interrupted this video was that the old man was looking through memories and feeling nostalgic, and that the final scene showed that he is still a kid at heart even though he doesn’t appear to be one. With a little reading I found that the video was actually about Alzheimer’s, and finding this out only made me more impressed with the video. After hearing what it was about it all made perfect sense, the feeling of being lost at sea trying to fish up memories but ultimately still failing because of the rope eating them. I am very impressed with Hayley’s animations and I can’t wait to explore more of them.
