Kamrooz Aram, 'Palimpsest: Unstable Paintings For Anxious Interiors', at Green Art gallery, until 3-May.

Aram starts with the same floral form from Persian carpets in all his paintings, and then goes through a process of destroying and rebuilding patterns and layers of paint. He is interested in the role art plays as 'ornament' (evident by the exhibition title, as well), and also in the process behind image-making and how it informs the meaning of a painting.

This is the artist's first solo exhibit in Dubai.

Slavs and Tatars, 'Language Arts', at The Third Line, until 17-April.

In this exhibition, the collective, Slavs and Tatars, celebrates language "as a source of political, metaphysical, even sexual emancipation." On, and with a bit of ribald humor, too.

This is their first solo show in the Middle East.

Rauschenberg Residency, group exhibition, at Isabelle Van Den Eynde, until 25-Apr.

A fun exhibit to see, certainly in its immersiveness. The artists, brothers, fellows of the Rauschenberg Residency, collaborated on the artworks, ranging across all mediums.

Shahpour Pouyan, 'PTSD', at Lawrie Shabibi, until 22-Apr.

Pouyan investigates the ongoing idea of power and hegemony in his works. The exhibition includes new drawings and sculptures. This marks Pouyan’s first foray into ceramics.

Yee I-Lann, 'Picturing Power, at Tyler Rollins, ends 12-Apr.

I-Lann is “widely considered to be among Malaysia’s leading contemporary artists. [She] works primarily in photo-media, “often engaging with archipelagic Southeast Asia’s turbulent history and addressing, with wit and humanity, the socio-political impact of current politics, neo-colonialism, and globalization.” This exhibition focuses on 3 of her recent series.

This is I-Lann’s first solo exhibition in the USA.

Pema Rinzin, 'Abstract Enlightenment', at Joshua Liner, ends 29-Mar.

Rinzin is an artist influenced by his diverse experience throughout the world, including Tibet, India, Japan, Europe and USA. He utilizes traditional thangka techniques and mediums to create contemporary works.”

Jonny Briggs, 'Monstrares', at Julie Meneret, ends 30-Mar.

Briggs’ works is somewhat surreal in what it reveals and what is void in its human figures. He is interested in human nature’s “contradictory impulses; to be consistently restrained and well-mannered in order to find societal acceptance, yet to freely satisfy one’s primal and bodily desires.”

Briggs is the recipient of the Saatchi New Sensations Prize.

Perry Burns, 'Galaxies', at Cheryl Hazan, ends 29-Mar.

Burns describes his work as a merge of ‘traditions of Islamic pattern and Abstract Expressionism.’ These works are filled with patterns of color that mostly soothe instead of distract.

Jessica Sofia Mitrani, ‘Headpieces for Peace’, at fi:af, ends 22-Mar.

Mitrani examines themes of feminism and fashion in her work. This video is the winner of the 2012 A Shaded View on Fashion Film (ASVOFF) Grand Prix, and it is the first time it is being shown in New York.

Carolina Raquel Antich, 'De pronto sentí el río en mí (Suddenly I felt the river in me)', at Lynch Tham, ends 30-Mar.

Antich has a longtime fascination with the world of children: The intimacy of their gaze..has been the focus of my work for some time…My figures are not part of a portrait gallery. Through them, I try to evoke distant memories that belong to all of us somehow.

Emma Hack, Undercover, at Rebecca Hossack, ends 12-Mar.

Hack paints a camouflage of geometric patterns, mosaic tiles, etc., blurring the distinction between canvas and live body when photographed.

This is her first solo exhibition in New York.

You may have seen Hack’s camouflage work in the Grammy-winning song Somebody That I Used to Know by Gotye.

Diana Delgago and Rebeca Raney, organized by Uprise Art, located at Outpost pop-up gallery, ends 26-Feb.

Delgado “creates bold paintings driven by color, gesture, and pattern play.” Raney “creates drawings and sculptures…filled with whimsical flora, hybrid animals, and a cast of characters from an imaginary world.”

Off White Desert, group exhibition, at Louis B. James, ends 9-Mar.

The paintings and sculptures in this exhibition evoke both the “vast emptiness of the American West and the grittiness of quotidian urban life.

Kour Pour, at UNTITLED, ends 23-Feb.

Each of Pour’s paintings references a specific Persian rug. He starts with a silkscreen image, and then paints over it, erasing, and re-painting, editing the historical narrative of the rug.

Janet Fish, 'Panoply', at DC Moore, ends 15-Mar.

Fish’s paintings are a marvel to see. She captures still life with a heightened sense of clarity with her use of light and detail, “hovering in a space between fluid painterliness and measured stillness.”

Interior Dialogue, group exhibition, at Sargent's Daughters, ends 23-Feb.

This exhibition is an intimate entry into the inner world and spaces created by each of the four artists. They draw inspiration from everyday life and surroundings.

A group exhibition of 8 artists based in Long Island, NY, centered on the idea of personal identities. Each artist uses popular culture as a reference point to communicate how they view themselves, creating a personal dialogue that is both self-reflective and self-critical.
