In 1981, stamp and mail artist Edward F Higgins III painted Guglielmo Achille Cavellini’s body as a performance piece in red, white and green, the colors of the Italian flag. In 1995, 5 years after Cavellini’s death, the symbolic gesture became immortalized in music subculture as the iconic image made the album cover of “I am an Elastic Fire Cracker” by Tripping Daisy, an American neo psychedelic pop rock band. The cover art for the band's hit single “I Got a Girl” appropriates a candid photograph of Cavellini and Higgins mid-performance. Both artists acknowledge the photographer, making him implicit in their artistic creation.

On Wednesday, September 10th, 2014 at LYNCH THAM Gallery, PEDRO CALAPEZ created his broken line installation on the occasion of the artist's United States debut Exhibition—"meadow-curtain-round-broken line."

Following critically acclaimed exhibitions in Europe, meadow-curtain-round-broken line, offers a succinct overview of Calapez’s fascination with spatial relationships, landscapes, and the significance of ways of seeing. Details are critical in his work, as this exhibition presents an exercise in exploration and discovery, encouraging an awareness of the different possibilities of the gaze. In each work, Calapez enters into dialogue with the architectural context as he evokes everyday encounters and memories through fragmented, richly colored reflections about light, space and landscape. — lynchtham

opens Wed, May 28, 6-8p: “Figure Studies”  Walter Robinson Lynch Tham Gallery, 175 Rivington St., NYC Known for his figurative work, Robinson has created a new series of paintings based on common fashion promotional photographs, referenced from a variety of sources: department store flyers, daily newspapers and marketing emails, Macy's, Target, JC Penney, Lands' End and Bergdorf Goodman advertisements. The paintings segment and define their audience by gender, age and social role, with an implicit address to women, or to men, or to mothers, or to professionals. They are seasonal, identifiable as "summer" or "winter." They contain markers of age and youth, of boyhood or girlhood.

Carolina Raquel Antich, 'De pronto sentí el río en mí (Suddenly I felt the river in me)', at Lynch Tham, ends 30-Mar.

Antich has a longtime fascination with the world of children: The intimacy of their gaze..has been the focus of my work for some time…My figures are not part of a portrait gallery. Through them, I try to evoke distant memories that belong to all of us somehow.

opens tonight, Feb 19, 6-8p: “«suddenly I felt the river in me»”  Carolina Raquel Antich Lynch Tham Gallery, 175 Rivington St., NYC featuring porcelain artworks and a series of canvases, the exhibition is a purview of Antich’s longtime fascination with childhood. Antich recently embraced a sculptural extension of her paintings, magnifying the delicateness and fragility of her subjects and the situations they are involved in. While the artist’s paintings often evoke an allegorical worldview, depicting children in a territory where there is no fear, a free zone full of nuances and beauty, the sculptural work brings to the fore spaces of protection and refuge, while underscoring the autistic condition of her subjects in their extreme mode of concentration.

In 1986, Cavellini collaborated with a member of Gutai group, the late Shozo Shiamoto, in a special performance where Cavellini wrote on Shiamoto's shaved head as part of his From the Page of the Encyclopedia series.

A photo of this performance graced the cover of the magazine published by Gutai art group (recently showcased at the Guggenheim Museum in New York in 2013).
