Summer project matchbox W for: Wood Willow West Water/waterfall
Julia Ciccone and one of her her portrait artworks I have interviewed this artist in St. Ives for my summer project because I loved the detail and sensitivity in her art. This made me want to interview her instead of the other artists on show in the gallery.
Interview with an Artist
Interview with Julia Ciccone.
Portrait artist in St Ives.
Hello my name is Wiktroia Palider. I study currently in Plymouth College of Art would it be possible to interview you for my summer project?Â
Interview questions/answers.
Q- For how long have you been selling your artwork?
A- I started quite late to be honest, I am sharing this little open gallery with another artist as you can see, for about ten years now I think. Before that I was selling everything privately but I have been painting or about 60 years.
Q- I can see that you paint with oils and draw with pencils do you use any other equipment for your artworks?Â
A- No not really I like delicate drawings with pencil and I really like oils because I just love it when I have to spend a lot of time on a painting. You see I personally think that painting with acrylics is more for people who like to paint their artwork faster. Its just like the difference between using different pencils and charcoal.Â
Q- I see what you mean, I really like the fact that all your drawings are very gentle and light. Do your drawings describe who you are?
A- Its just the way I draw, the way artists paint shows a lot about  who they are and their personalities. Yes I am a sensitive person if that’s what you mean.
Q- That is very true. So you seem like you know a lot about people then from that perspective, is this right?
A- Yes I have always been like that I studied psychology, but it didn’t lead to any where so I just earned on selling art.
Q- May i ask why you started drawing?Â
A- I don’t know to be honest, I was like that since I can remember.Â

Summer project task I have taken a photo of number 2 because it is one of my personal lucky numbers. I decided to edit it into an old vintage photo because Of the cracks on the left top corner and the gate so I thought it would make a nice effect with the number. Picture 3 was taken near where I live. The lady that lives in this house loves flowers and has plenty of them, which is why I wanted to make a contrast... So I decided to keep the flowers colourful and make everything else black and white. In the final picture I have taken the photo of number 8 because it's my favourite and most meaningful number out of all. I tried to make the glass in the door look like the 8 itself for a nice match.

How I wanted to start:
My first idea was to make a comic. I wanted to make something about fighting, because this sort of training is a big part of me and there are a lot of reasons why I started training in Martial Arts. While I started thinking about the comic...my first thought was “I’m not good at drawing comics/ animations” so I was thinking of making something realistic and started looking at Shaun Tan’s art. After I had talked to one of my tutors I decided to make a “drawing video”. I really wanted to make my video deep and emotional using dark colours such as black and grey, so I decided to use charcoal for the things that happened and make my fantasy and positive feelings colourful.
Changing the idea:
I started off by imagining 14 main images that would be put as drawings together. In the end I made about 30 drawings with written down “thoughts” to use within my project. Shaun Tan and Alfred Bascha were the main artists that inspired me. I used Shaun Tan’s chawky, dark, deep style for my “more or less realistic drawings” and Alfred Bascha’s emotional style for my surrealistic image of “the Banzai Tree”. All was going well until I had realized that time was flying by, so I had to rush a little bit more. In the end:
I edited the drawings on an app called “My Video Show” and finally recorded my voice to it and downloaded all the music that I needed for my final piece and put it onto the video.
Criticism: I believe that my final piece  ended up like I expected it to be. I think that my combination of thoughts and images were described pretty well to the emotions that I felt and the sound to my project explained it a little bit better and made it more emotional and detailed. Unfortunately the quality of the final sound was not good enough since I had downloaded it from YouTube and also the original quality of the video was not satisfactory. Also because it was something very personal I found it hard to share with the public. Since I had never researched as much within my last projects, I tried to make it better and in the end I focused more on researching and blogging than making my final piece “perfect” I learned that in the future for a video like this I should draw more images to explain my artwork better and to show the audience a bit more what it’s actually about.
All together I really enjoyed this project because I could share a part of me and I focused on my strengths but also tried to improve on my weaknesses.
I was very happy to have such supportive tutors to give me so much advice and to help me work independently on my project.

I am inspired by Alfred Bascha for his beautiful Dark, mysterious and Surrealistic Art. I really like his work because it is deep and he puts so much emotions into his work

Personal reasons of starting Mixed Martial Arts and why I used this as my final piece
When I came first to the UK at the age of 8 I was being bullied, because I couldn’t speak English and for being very short. After the fact that no one could do anything about it, I was to weak to defend myself from taller boys and because it was happening for very long, my dad had enough of it and made me train. We started of training privately, then I began with Karate and switched to Kickboxing. People stopped bullying me in Primary School after I had defended myself. When I came to Germany at the age of 11, the same things happened again. I was being bullied for not speaking German straight away, for being short and for being overweight. I carried on training Muay - Thai. I was able to defend myself, built up my self confidence and felt a lot safer. I wanted to get better and stronger so I decided to switch to Mixed Martial Arts in Germany and carried on when I came to the UK again. I had my competition on the 5th of March (That I had used as my final piece) I had lost on weight, I got stronger and experienced that every day training brings something new each day. Training for me doesn’t just teach me how to fight but also how to relax and focus, it teaches me the inner peace and respect towards myself and others around me. I used this as my final piece because fighting is a very important part of me and it’s something I wanted to share about myself. I would also like people to think a little bit more positive about Martial Arts because it’s not all about hurting and being an “animal”
A video to share about the great reasons to begin training in a martial art... of any style!
A very emotional video explaining why people started with Martial Arts and why they continue and what they have achieved.
