Announcing Fanfiction.lol !
hey all! i've built a new ao3 fork called fanfiction.lol 🤙🏽 key differences:
🚫 no invite queue: sign up and start posting immediately. no waiting, no velvet rope.
🏳️🌈 expanded content warnings: added ableism, homophobia/transphobia, racism, rpf and more. plus relationship tags for aro/ace spectrum, qpr, non-binary/genderqueer focus, poly/ensemble, and more.
🏷️ all tags are canonical: everything you tag goes into the searchable record. no volunteer wrangling bottleneck.
💜 fandom-agnostic moderation: i care about the writing, not fandom politics or discourse. write whatever you want, tag it honestly.
it's a small personal project but fan communities deserve independent infrastructure.
if you enjoy fandom, i'd love for you to sign up and poke around. tell me what breaks. the source code is at source.tube/brennan/fanfiction.lol.
find me at brennan.day/accounts or email [email protected].
write whatever the hell you want! 💜
More Information
Hi, I wanted to add some more info about fanfic.lol based on some replies. I was trying to keep the original post short and have done write-ups elsewhere but I'll reiterate here.
The admin/webmaster: I'm Brennan! I'm a Queer Red River Métis writer and webdev and huge advocate for the IndieWeb. You can get to know to me on my site, brennan.day
I made this for fun, and it's running using a homelab server in my basement. I don't make money or anything else. I'm just doing it for the love of ball.
fanfic.lol is meant to be a small, independent alternative for fanfic and fandom that prioritizes joy and fun. No aims at trying to replace AO3!
I am anti-genAI and so is the site. You can read more about my stance on AI here.
Archive warnings, like everything else, are under construction! I do have to adhere to the laws of my country (Canada). Please be patient.
I am pushing straight to production, which is to say the entire site could explode at anytime, so please do not use it as the only place you put things! :)
I forsee only a handful of people using this site, it def isn't for everyone. If you don't like it that's okay! Whether you want to give me input or just ignore it entirely.
I did a longer write-up here. Thank you everyone for the kind, warm reception of my silly little project. <3
I love the longer write-up. It gives me a much better sense of where you're coming from and why people should trust you—or which users would be a good fit.
I was there for the start of AO3, and we really did think we were going to usher in the next age of archives a la eFiction. It took too long for AO3's code to be in that kind of shape and the internet changed radically around us. We did not mean to create a behemoth. We just wanted venture capital bros to stop disrespecting us.
As a side note, all the comments you're getting like "There already is a fanfiction website. Wtf" are exactly what people said about AO3/OTW in 2007. There was a ton of bitching about us stealing FFN's idea. (Never mind that there were older archives.) There were frequent complaints about how there was already "an archive" and we didn't need another. Most of that discussion got deleted when FFN decided to nuke all of its inactive social spaces one Thanksgiving weekend while nobody was around to object or save their data. But I was there and I remember it and it sounded exactly like these comments now.
The oldschool core of AO3 was into the age of archives. We liked there being lots of different little spaces run by different fans. It's nice to see that energy floating around in 2026. Go indieweb!
I wish you a hundred invested users who want to form a community and nobody else.
havent checked it out personally yet but just a super important note that since op says hes obeying canadian laws:
canadian laws are very different then most countries, ergo, if you want to post underage/gruesome stuff, it would be safer for op if you posted on that on ao3 instead. obscenity laws do in fact exist here and op get in legal trouble depending on what you post. so you know, be nice to op.
someone already asked op "is dead dove and proship content allowed here" and he said "yes if its legal" but didn't clarify what that meant, but basically in canada its
"if it can be interpreted as obscene, you can get in trouble"
so while you can get away with sfw content of lets say an adult/minor, it can bring things into outright illegal territories if you make it nsfw. but its not JUST that. our obscenity laws ALSO apply to violent sexual horror. so if your kink is lets say, woundfucking, a person can get op in legal trouble for hosting it, even if everything is all consensual.
people don't often get in trouble for obscenity laws because its So Much Effort, but from a hosting perspective thats different. a user posting content on ao3 isn't really gonna get tracked down, but a canadian hosting a website could be.
in conclusion: make sure to check out your kinks on canadian law sites before you do anything here. genuinely a nice project, just be careful for ops sake
Yup. Good point. That's something to look out for in most archives, whether from owner preference or local laws. I'd say the US is more of an outlier than Canada; we just exert an undue influence on internet culture.
A return to an Age of Archives means reading the rules of each more carefully. There used to be a lot more variability, not just because of laws but also in terms of focus.
In general, if you post a lot of underage, violent kink or noncon, AO3 is probably going to remain the right choice for hosting. A number of countries, not just Canada, go after a lot of things in text that the US does not.
I want to emphasize that this isn't a stance on OP's part any more than AO3 having to comply with US trade embargoes represents AO3 staff's personal opinions on Cubans. This is just the reality of running a site.

All Men Want to Know
Audiobook
Nina Bouraoui
A haunting, lyrical French bestseller set in Paris and Algiers about desire, shame and violence.
In All Men Want to Know, the author traces her blissful childhood in Algeria, a sun-soaked paradise, recalling long trips across the desert with her mother and sister and hazy summer afternoons spent on the beach with her friend Ali. But Nina's mother is French - moving to Algeria for love at a time when most Europeans were desperate to leave - and as civil war approaches, their sunny idyll gives way to increasingly hostile and violent outbreaks. When something unspeakable happens to her mother, the family flee to Paris.
In Paris, Nina lives alone. She is eighteen years old. It's the 1980s. Four nights a week she walks across Paris to a legendary women-only nightclub, the Katmandou. She sits alone at the bar, afraid of her own desires, of her sudden and intoxicating freedom. There she meets the glamorous, deeply troubled Ely, her volatile friends Lizz and Laurence, and the beautiful Julia, with whom she falls desperately in love. And, most importantly, she starts to write.

Hey do you know what rumination is?
Rumination is probably the most common type of OCD compulsion, but I rarely see anyone talking about it. I've talked to multiple people diagnosed with OCD who didn't even recognize it as a compulsion.
Basically, if you have OCD you have terrible intrusive thoughts. They can be about anything, but common themes are fear of being a bad person, fear of hurting someone, fear of contamination. etc.
Rumination is when you get stuck in a spiral. Rumination is when you spend hours catastrophizing, overthinking, analyzing, telling yourself it's going to be okay.
I'll say it again:
Rumination is a compulsion.
Rumination is a compulsion, and that means you have to stop doing it.
I did ERP (exposure response prevention) for my OCD with a therapist! For 9 months! And it did help, but the idea didn't really click until I found this website a couple years later.
And Oh My God. It made things make so much more sense, and I was able to pull myself out of an episode even though I wasn't in therapy or on meds at the time.
Genuinely if you have OCD, or even if you suspect you have OCD, I'm begging you to read some of these articles.
Like this was genuinely life changing for me.
Here are some of the ones that were most helpful to me:

Hey this movie is really important in queer history! It was the first feature length film directed by a black lesbian! You can watch it here for free!
I really recommend you do because while it is a rom-com (and a drama), it also looks at how the stories of black queers are over looked in history.
movie rec!!!
I miss the days when, no matter how slow your internet was, if you paused any video and let it buffer long enough, you could watch it uninterrupted
If you use Firefox, you can go to the about:config page, search for "media.mediasource.enabled" and double click on it to set it to false. After you restart Firefox, all youtube videos will load entirely even when paused! This also affects other streaming websites :)
There's more to do actually, now
go to About:config find media.mediasource.enabled and toggle it to false find media.cache_readahead_limit and change it to 9999 find media.cache_resume_threshold and change it to 9999
additionally if you'd prefer mp4 to webm
also in about:config, find: media.encoder.webm.enabled media.mediasource.webm.audio.enabled media.mediasource.webm.enabled media.webm.enabled and toggle them all to false
note! this will limit video to 1080p

印籠 (inrô) pill box/nested boxes, handy chart by fantastic Edo-lover Nadeshico Rin.
Inrô were first used during Sengoku period by men to carry their personal seals (印鑑 inkan) and thick red ink (朱肉 shuniku). It was then used to carry medecines (薬 kusuri), such as pills (丸薬 ganyaku), powders (散薬 sanyaku), or decoctions (煎じ薬 senjigusuri). Slowy people also added any small trinkets which could fit in.
First carried by samurai class, it then spread to chônin commoners in the Edo period. Many shapes existed, and inrô boxes could be made from many materials depending of their owners’ fortune, from paper to precious ivory. Often beautifully decorated, their designs could include raden (mother of pearl inlays), or makie (gold powder).
On the right, you can see the different part of an inrô:
根付 (netsuke) carved toggle (sometimes very intricated miniature sculptures), slipped into the obi belt
紐 (himo) cord, holding everything together
緒締 (ojime) string-fastener bead, could be made from precious coral or as decorated as netsuke
飾結び (kazari musubi) ornamental knot, at the bottom
紐通し孔 (himodôshiana) lacing hole, to thread the cord into the boxes
蓋鬘 (futakazura) top piece, lid of the box
段 (-dan) row of boxes, ex. 一段 (ichidan) first row
Main types of inrô shapes existed, with of without visible lacing holes (紐通し付き himodôshi tsuki = visible / 隱し紐通し kakushi himodôshi = hidden). Rin details following styles on the left:
杏仁形 (kyônin gata) apricot seed shaped
楕円形 (daen gata) ellipse shaped
胴張形 (dôbari gata) hull shaped
丸角長方形 (marusumi chôhôkei) rounded rectangle shaped
長方形 (chôhôkei) rectangle shaped
角切形 (sumikiri gata) cut-corners shaped
The Sluts
Dennis Cooper
"Cooper deserves reassessment . . . this compelling page-turner ought to remind adventurous readers that important transgressive literature needn't be something only the French and the occasional perverted American can get behind." -- LA Weekly
Set largely on the pages of a website where gay male escorts are reviewed by their clients, and told through the postings, emails, and conversations of several dozen unreliable narrators, The Sluts chronicles the evolution of one young escort's date with a satisfied client into a metafiction of pornography, lies, half-truths, and myth. Explicit, shocking, comical, and displaying the author's signature flair for blending structural complexity with direct, stylish, accessible language, The Sluts is Cooper's most transgressive novel since Frisk, and one of his most innovative works of fiction to date.

Talking to friends with inept parents is crazy. No wonder they’re like this if their parents kept fumbling
“I’m having trouble adapting to my adult responsibilities” well no wonder, nobody raised you 😭😭😭
Hot tip for future parents: you actually have to guide your kid to adulthood. Feeding them and waiting for them to grow up is not enough since they are not house plants. A little more thought and care is required.
for those lacking certain "adulting" skills, especially things around the house, check out:

Everyone stand back I'm about to kick a hornets' nest
A fun thing about the kind of person who sees a post about how it's actually really fucked up that the default way for imperial core internet artists to produce merch is "outsource to services that pay pennies to workers somewhere in southeast asia to produce cheap trinkets with your designs on them" and decides to leave this kind of comment
Is that if you go to their blog it'll usually be full of posts talking about how generative AI users are irredeemably evil for using a service that exploits the intellectual work of widdle indie artists and pollutes the environment. Very fun kind of cognitive dissonance.
Using the evil slop machine to produce any kind of picture is a deeply morally reprehensible and exploitative act. Using the system of global imperialism to get acrylic charms with your drawings encased inside them made in a sweatshop somewhere in indonesia without having to pay anything close to a living wage for the people making them is the god-given right of any Artist and Creator™, and don't you dare criticize them for it, why are you pressuring small, independent creators?
Design for Living (1933) - dir. Ernst Lubistch
There's a bunch of adhd advice out there that's like "people with adhd tend to work better under deadlines due to the anxiety so here are ways to artificially induce a stress response in order to get you to get work done" and it's like well what if I don't want to be stressed out all the time in order to function
this gold shouldn't stay in the comments
hey loves, I’ve been reading through the comments and loads of people are asking how to not fall into this pattern because that’s all they know. so, here’s some advice from Auntie Pan who’s been in the trenches (stress-caused disabilities and chronic illnesses).
context: grew up in an abusive, controlling home, escaped to uni, had a prolonged mental breakdown, became a teacher and worked in a dysfunctional school with amazing kids and nightmare management for years. I did not realise I have adhd and autism for a long time. (You might even be able to scroll back through this blog to find the time around which I did realise lol.)
ANYWAY, things that have helped me because my body can no longer handle any kind of stress without flaring up:
If you’re doing anything that requires you to do a lot of prep before you begin the actual thing (e.g. cooking, deep cleaning a room, moving house), mise en place. That’s a fancy french way of saying get everything ready before you begin. So if I’m cooking idk spaghetti carbonara, that means fry and chop the bacon, separate the egg yolks from the whites, put water in the kettle, put dry spaghetti into a pan. Once everything’s ready, it reduces the mental load and means I can focus on the actual cooking and any clean up that I can do along the way. H/t to @ms-demeanor for this, you changed my life!
the Might As Well rule. This one works really well for me but you gotta be careful otherwise you’ll get sucked into the Vortex. Basically, let’s imagine you’re in the bathroom, brushing your teeth. You notice that the extra roll of toilet paper has been used. instead of thinking, “I’ll get to that later”, and then forgetting about it until you sit down on the bog (no judgement, we’ve all been there), you think “Might As Well put an extra roll while I’m here!” This tends to help with the little tasks that build up over time. This Does Not Work for big tasks.
Leading on from no.2, Do It Immediately/ASAP really helps me too. My current boss will email me on a Friday and say, ‘don’t reply to this now! Leave it til monday!’ But she and i both know that if i leave it til monday, I will forget and get stressed and this will make me Very Ill. So, instead, the moment i receive the email, I’ll either schedule in replying to it as soon as I’m done with my current thing, OR I’ll reply to it immediately.
Anything that can’t be actioned immediately, i mark as Unread. Anything Unread in my inbox is a future action, and i check those Unread emails/texts/whatevers Every. Day. To make sure whether today is the day i have the info to action it. (This also means i have to stay on top of my inbox. I read all my emails and then mark them accordingly. I’m also brutal with unsubscribing)
The House Always Wins. Both in a literal sense, because i am in a constant battle with keeping my house clean, and i know now that I’ll never get it as clean as i want it. It’s impossible, i no longer have the energy or stamina to vacuum and scrub everything. But also just in a life sense. I’m never going to achieve things to perfection, and perfect is the opposite of done. And getting things done is that much more important when you have limited energy and strength. Accept that you often have to half-arse life in order to Full-Arse the few things that really matter to you.
Have multiples of everything, everywhere. I wear support gloves, so i need to have handcream at every sink and everywhere i sit down in the house. I try to keep it unobtrusive, but it means i don’t have to trek upstairs just to moisturise my hands. Gum, phone chargers, pens and pencils, water bottles, hand sanitizer, whatever you need.
Work with people, even if it’s online. Body doubling actually works. Also I’ve found that if I’m working on assignments, taking myself to a library or study area that isn’t my bedroom helps so much.
Show off! Tell people on here or elsewhere in your life about the fact that you’ve just written 100 words! Or that you’ve cleaned the fridge and that’s a really big deal for you. Celebrate your wins, no matter how small.
Basically, you’re aiming to reduce the mental load as much as possible. Wear the same types of clothes all the time to minimise the amount of laundry. Eat the same three lunches so decision fatigue doesn’t take over.
All of this takes time to implement and it is cumulative, but i hope it helps. Reading the comments on this post, i finally understand why adhd is comorbid with so many other conditions. let’s take care of each other <3
I'm so glad to hear that helped you!
For anybody looking for resources from someone dealing with actual ADHD, I have an incomplete but ever growing list of ADHD tips, tools, and suggestions on my website.
A lot of the pages on that site are adapted from my tumblr posts, for instance I'm adapting this post about car repair projects with ADHD into a guide on project management and completion with ADHD.
(Red links are stuff that I've got planned but haven't published for reasons that are probably clear to anyone looking for ADHD advice online)
Look, it's simple. If a person has to actively work to make money, they're not "the rich" and they're not the problem. A surgeon making $200k a year still stops making money if they stop showing up to do surgery, because they're still selling their labor. The radical discrepancies in how we value different skills are certainly a problem, but the guy who makes money when he doesn't even get out of bed is the one making money on the value of other people's labor.
Time for my favorite chart!
Notice billions ain't even on there. Outliers something something.
