Mason’s smile faded when she mentioned that her parents had passed away. “I’m…I’m sorry.” It was all he could manage to say. There was now an awkwardness between then and he knew it was his fault but how was he suppose to know that her parents were dead. “I didn’t mean to…” His voice trailed off, he wasn’t even sure where he was going with that sentence. He just grabbed his coffee and took a long drink to keep him from talking.

She didn’t speak for a while, chewing on her bottom lip. Arya didn’t want to break down in front of the boy so instead she looked up and forced a sweet smile with all her might. “It’s fine, how were you to know.” She replied, clasping her hands in her lap as she sat there. “Could you excuse me for a second, I’m just going to run to the ladies room. Do you want anouther drink on my way back?” Arya swallowed, getting up and going to the bathroom, pulling herself together before coming back out again.

“Why are you afraid to show them?” Mason continued with his questions, even though he could see she didn’t really want to talk about it. His curiosity was getting the best of him. “Last question, I swear, then we can talk about whatever if you want.”

Her lips twitched, but not in an attempt to not smile, but in an attempt to not freak out. She tensed her jaw slightly, her breathing shallow although not obviously. “They…I can’t show them they both died.” She muttered, gathering up the papers in front of her and shoving the sketchbook back in her bad. She didn’t want to talk about the drawings anymore, nor did she make eye contact with the boy.

“Are you ever going to show them?” Mason wondered. He knew sharing her drawings was personal, and showing them to the subjects of her drawings was even more personal than just showing him. “You’re really good, I’m sure they’d love to see them.”

“I...maybe some of them. Not my parents.” She muttered, wishing there was some way she could force this conversation to move on but she felt like she was trapped in it and her breathing was getting slightly strangled. “I might show me sister one day. The ones of her. Maybe.”

Mason laughed a bit. “You have a little something…” He pointed to his upper lip so she would understand what he was trying to say. He handed her a napkin and than drank some more coffee, licking his lips as he pulled the mug away. “Do you show any of them the drawings? Do they know you draw them?”

Arya looked at him in confusion before realising what he was saying and grabbing the napkin, wiping her face. “Shit, thanks.” She said with a light laugh, screwing up the napkin and putting it down on the table. “The people in my drawings? Uh...no...I’ve never shown any of them. They don’t know.” She shook her head firmly, leaving out how she couldn’t tell half the people.

He looked down at the drawing she was staring at, not seeing it for very long until she closed the book. He did however look at the eyes in the drawing, because he agreed with her. The saying the eyes are the windows to the soul isn’t a saying just because. Eyes have a way of giving people away, in the drawing her father’s eyes looked sad, in pain. “Well…” He started to speak. He was going to mention the sadness in the drawing but decided against it. She had obviously become uncomfortable in showing him that piece, why else would she close it. “You capture the human form well, anyone you draw should feel honored.”

She gave him a small smile as she looked back up. “Thank you, I just hope I do them justice.” Arya picked up the hot chocolate that the waitress had brought her and drank it quickly to try and give her something to do. She ended up with a hideous chocolate mustache but classically didn’t notice. It was like something out of a shitty film. “I like drawing people I know because it’s easier to draw on their emotions and personalities in the drawings, and I think that’s most of what makes art interesting. The emotion.”

“This is a cute one.” Mason replied with a smile. “Can I ask you something?” He looked over at her before taking his mug and sipping his coffee. “What made you get into drawing and what made you focus more on portraits and stuff?” He set his mug back on the table but kept his hands wrapped around it. He was genuinely curious on her story, any artist’s story really. Knowing what sparked that creativity and what keeps them going allows one to look at the actual art in an entirely new way.

She smiled and nodded, waiting to hear his question. She paused for a moment, thinking about it, because the truth was most of her paintings did involve the human form in some way or anouther. “Well....” She puffed out her cheeks and blew the air out slowly working out what to say. “I was really big into storybooks when I was little but mainly the ones with illustrations. You know, the old copies of things like Peter Pan and Cinderella. So I started copying the pictures in the books. Then I started copying photos, and then finally pictures of people from memory. It kinda evolved from there. You can draw stability into a picture if you focus hard enough, it’s ... calming.” She shrugged, looking down and tracing the nose of the baby with her pointer finger. It was her sister from the first week she was born, and Arya had never shown it to her. She wasn’t sure why. “I did one of my dad from my memory...” She said, flicking through to the page and showing it to him. “I love eyes. Eyes say so much that even words can’t say.” She mumbled, trying to keep herself calm as she looked at the drawing she was showing him before shaking her head and closing the book not wanting to look at it anymore and wishing she hadn’t shown him.

Tyler chuckled at her comment. He knew from experience that the couch wasn’t the most comfortable place to sleep, but he fell asleep there often enough that he didn’t mind anymore. “I’ll sleep in my bed tonight, I promise,” he vowed. “You want me to text you at four in the morning, whenever I can’t sleep? That’s gonna wake you up, Arya.”

“Yes I want you to text me then, it’s not like i’ll be asleep anyway.” Arya shrugged in a unbothered voice, knowing it was the truth. The girl slept sporadically if at all, not that it seemed to hurt her much. “I was awake at four am this morning. Actually I was outside Payton’s room waiting for a suitable time to wake her up but that...is a bit weird.”

Mason looked at her confused, wondering where the comment about his hair even came from. He shook his head, brushing the comment aside once she had another drawing to show him. His attention was back on the sketchbook, this drawing was a little more disturbing but still really good. “I’m impressed.” He said nodding, brushing some of his hair out of his face. “Really, how are you not already some famous artist?”

Arya just laughed at his words, finding the notion hilarious and pulled the book back towards her. When she looked at her book she saw twisted manifestations of her confused mind and had no idea why anyone else would want to be bothered to see them. “I also do a lot of human drawing, sort of still life mixed with portrait from my brain.” She flicked through the book until she found the double page spread of a drawing and photo. “I did this one even though I don’t actually remember the photo being taken...I know I was there. I kinda took some liberties with it.”

Raven watched intently, shrugging at Arya’s statement but didn’t comment on it any further. She was far more engrossed in the current conversation they were having. “Wouldn’t count on it,” she went on, letting her arms fall to her sides to keep her balance as she continued to walk backwards. “Hot chocolate,” she repeated, tasting how the words felt against her tongue before grinning. “I see you’re a fan of hot stuff. Do you think I’d fit well in that category?” Raven looked up with a teasing smile as she waited for a response.

Arya’s eyes widened as Raven expertly twisted the conversation back to her physically appearance and blushed, shaking her head and putting it in her hands. “How do you do that? How do you make things twist like that so easily?” She laughed, covering her eyes. “You’re stunning Raven, but we both know that, you don’t need me to tell you.” She said honestly, taking her hands away and running one through her hair as she wondered why this walked seemed so long all of a sudden.

“It sparked a great drawing, really this is amazing.” Mason added looking back at the picture. “Cliche or not, it’s easy to see where you were going with this.” He was tempted to flip through the pages of the book but knew he shouldn’t. “What else do you got?” He pushed the book back to her so she could find something else she was okay with him seeing.

“Thanks...” She said, the compliments making her blush yet again, the girl wasn’t really good at taking compliments, they made her feel like she should say something nice back but she normally ended up embarrassing herself. “You have nice hair.” She blurted out before frowning. “Uhhh...yeah anyway, other things, yes.” She said hurriedly, flicking through the book and showing him some of her line drawings. “I did this one...it’s kinda abstract but I wanted to meld together my enjoyment of drawing people and drawing things that are....a bit out there...”

“At least you wouldn’t have waited outside for me. You could’ve been inside the house.” Payton’s face softened. “Yes, I do. I always happen to whack it off my nightstand when it starts blaring. That’s why it’s on the floor.”

“I don’t mind, really. It’s June so it wasn’t too cold or anything. Plus I had a jacket.” She shrugged, a smile on her face. “Ah!” She jumped off the bed and grabbed the alarm clock, putting it on the nightstand gently. “You should put it further away from your hand.

Mason looked at the drawing, making sure his mug was far enough away as to not accidentally spill anything on the art. “This is really good.” He tapped his finger on the page and then looked up at her. “You did this the first week you were here.” He tilted his head, “You didn’t give a lot of time for New York to show you what it really has to offer.” He flashed her a small half smile. “I mean yeah, parts of this city is a shit hole that I know but you just have to find the good in it.”

She laughed lightly at his smile, nodding. “I know, I judged a book by it’s cover. I shouldn’t have, but I couldn’t help myself. It’s in the apple because it’s the big apple and i’m a painful cliche.” She said in a self deprecating fashion, blushing slightly at the idiocy of her statement.

“I want to see whatever you’re willing to share with me.” Mason folded his hands together and rested them on the table. “I’m not even sure what I’m looking for, but when I see it I’ll know it.” His eyes glanced to her sketchbook.
