in regards to hiroshi — asami forgives him verbally, and a lot of it is done on his behalf. she can see his remorse and his guilt, and asami, at her core, will always love her father. that's her dad. he raised her, loved her alongside her mom, and then did his absolute best to make sure she'd always be safe once yasuko passed. he tried, and she can see that, even though everything got messy along the way.

so her forgiveness, most of it, was for him. in her heart, she still harbored so much resentment and anger for what he'd done. how hard he made life for her after everything came out. she harbored an anger for all their fights, all the ugly words he'd spoken out of his own grief. he had hurt her in a way she simply could not be repaired from, and giving him forgiveness — it was hard. she wasn't ready, yet.

and then he dies, and suddenly the forgiveness she had wanted to be able to gradually afford him is pointless. he is gone, and there is no one left to forgive.

asami is gutted. on top of her survivor's guilt, she has an unresolved grief with her feelings regarding her dad. she wasn't able to fully forgive him, they weren't able to really repair, and now there is nothing left. she lives with this violent, intense grief. she doesn't know what to do with it, because there's nothing to do.

i think sometimes it's easy to forget that asami is deeply softhearted because she's charming and funny and flirty and sarcastic. she can throw a good quip, she can act on impulse, she can be sharp. along with this, though, is her incredible sensitivity. asami is soft. she cares about the people around her, she cares about her friends, she cares about her city. all she really wants is to make it better, to keep people safe, and to be around her loved ones.

she's incredibly emotionally intelligent, and often wants to talk about things like feelings, issues, emotions, and conflict. she is really solution focused and aims to fix or help mend. she can adequately describe what she's feeling. she's gentle. she wants to help others be gentle, too.

*     she felt green, which is a dreadful color on her, if she was being honest. there was something about jumping through time, surely, that left one feeling  —  queasy. faint. she has been stuck in the past for weeks, now, but every so often something   [  . . .  ]   hits her. shifts. her world gets tilted off axis, and asami is helpless to do anything but ride it out. 

it's how she finds herself here, fingers digging into concrete wall as she supports herself against the side of a building.   "  eugh.  "   it's her only thought, right now. this feeling of vertigo nearly sweeps her off her feet.   "  you want a sprite ? you look kinda green.  "   @linghung had said, and it had taken asami a moment to blink her vision to normal. for a moment, there are duplicates of the man standing before her, but as her vision settles, he, too, settles into just one. asami blinks for good measure, but he stays the same.

"  i  —  it'll pass. i'm just   [  . . .  ]   not feeling well.  "   she couldn't very well explain her predicament.   "  do you help all fatigued people on the side of the road ?  "   an attempt at humor, a show that she was fine. asami tries to stand straight, but her world is still spinning. she needs to get home.   "  or did i get lucky ?  "

*     it felt like there was always a chill to the northern air temple, and asami does not miss the irony in that. while she's grown accustomed, for the most part  —  feeling the breeze always makes her miss home. time feels different, here, somehow, without her monotonous routine to fall back on, and asami struggles to remember how long it's been since that incident with xaishu. she knows she's met the avatar and his friends, though, for easily a week. 

he is  —  not the avatar she expected, though age will change many things. sometimes, she forgets that the avatars were children once, that even korra was smaller and brighter and less world hardened. though, this one  —  aang, she can see the weight of the world on his shoulders. she can see a loss in him so poignant it feels like a vice grip. asami wonders how he is able to carry it all, and still be kind.

"  i won't tell anyone unless you say so.  "   @bndair says, and she is reminded once again of his kindness.   "  thank you. i just  —  i worry it'll do more harm than good, if people learn of  [  . . .  ]   what happened to me. where i'm from. i don't want to ruin anything, or cause a problem.  "   she sighs, shoulders slumping a little as she takes a seat on the earth right next to the young avatar.   where asami is usually easy confidence, sometimes she falters. it's embarrassing to show, but this displacement has spooked her.   "  do you ever feel like that ? like you're not sure what the right move is ?  "

she snuggles closer, her chopped hair sticking out at odd angles, her bangs falling untidily across her forehead. korra burrows her head in, resting it on asami's chest with a small frown, and listens to the steady thump of her heart. her own beats in tandem : once, twice, three times — i and love and you. korra traces small spirals along asami's hip, " raava was there. when i spoke to her, she showed me these weird visions. i don't think it was a dream. " after the red lotus, it had been difficult to discern what was real and what was a trick of her own mind. had she been dreaming or had she unexpectedly ended up in the spirit world ?

it feels like the latter. deep creases line the corners of her eyes when they finally flutter open, her distaste for early mornings shining through. " it felt like an omen. she told me to remember who brought me to her. that i have to or else ... " korra winces, images of destruction flashing through her mind : republic city in ruins, nations shattered, the world forever changed. " nothing good. "

her fingers pause their movement and korra strains to look up at asami, " do you really have to go in to work ? we should just stay here for a little while. it's so peaceful. " and right now, peace is something korra can feel slipping through her fingers. some days she thinks the tighter she holds to it, the more it turns to water in her palms.

*     it was always easy, listening to korra. somehow, even from the very beginning, she'd always had some sort of a way of holding her attention, keeping it, plucking it away from everyone else in a way asami had never been used to. never had there really been a time, before korra, where someone could pull her from her thoughts, from another conversation  —  but now, it just makes sense. her focus was always korra, and asami's learned to adapt to it. here, in the comfort of her home, it was safe and easy. gentle. there was no hardship, but the severity of the dream pulls a small frown to asami's lips.

"do you think   [  . . .  ]   raava was warning you, maybe ?  "   asami doesn't like talk like this. she doesn't like omens, visions, warnings. superstition spooks her. her fingers card leisurely through korra's hair, though despite the softness of her touch, asami's brow is furrowed in deep thought. concern creeps, too.   "  who brought you to her ? what does that mean ?  "   she is sleep - muddled, well - rested for the first time in a long time. it is not often that they spend an entire night together. it is less often that they have the morning like this.

asami doesn't want to leave. somehow, it always sort of feels like her fault that she has to, that work is so important, but  —   "  i do have to go to work.  "   she doesn't budge, though, save for the way she cups korra's cheek, easing some of the strain of her girlfriend looking up at her. she smiles, indulgent, gaze flickering to her window.   "  but my first meeting isn't until late morning  —  so i can stay just a little longer, i suppose.  "   she teases, thumb a soft brush against korra's chin.   "  i'm surprised you don't have anywhere to be. it's been hard catching you, lately.  "
