Do you think Espio might be Japanese? It's a personal headcanon of mine because he's a ninja (Japanese-spy) and he's very disciplined as said in TMOSTH. I can also imagine him in a purple kimono because why not. Plus it is also stated in TMOSTH, he speaks 17 languages, one of them could be Japanese. Also, in the Chaotix team blast in Sonic Heroes, the Shamisen he plays originates from China but it was later introduced into Japan. I have no idea if all this makes sense, I just really want to know your opinion. (Sorry for the long paragraph) Thanks for reading! <3

Heyo! I definitely think he's supposed to be Japanese, yes xD with him being a Ninja, his heart shape on his body can easily be seen as a Sakura petal, the fact his favorite sweets are Dango 🍡 and ofc the shamisen you already mentioned xD
