Missouri Museums

Paradise Point Resort is a wonderful place to stay.  We are conveniently situated near both Hollister and Branson, Missouri.  Our unique location means that there is never a shortage of things to do or see when you stay with us.  Most people are familiar with the outdoor activities available in Missouri but did you know that we also have a lot of interesting museums?  Here are just a few of our favoite places to research, relive and relish history.

Titanic Museum We are still captivated by the story of the Titanic and if you are too, then you absolutely must stop by the Titanic Museum.  The two-story museum is built half-scale to the original and is anchored in the water to give the illusion of being at sea.  The 90- minute, self-guided tour is designed to give you the sensation of being a passenger.  They even have moments when you'll feel the same cold temperatures that the passengers did the night the ship sank.  View over 400 artifacts and 20 galleries that help tell the story of the ill-fated ship.

Veterans Memorial Museum If you're looking for a powerful, emotional experience, take a trip to the Veterans Memorial Museum in Branson.  This museum is a tribute to the brave men and women who defended our liberties during the 20th Century.  Your curiosity will get its fill through dramatic and thought-provoking exhibits, murals, sculptures and artifacts.

Celebrity Car Museum We all love to follow the lives of celebrities but what about those cool cars they drive in the movies?  Yep, those are considered celebrities too, at least to the folks at the Celebrity Car Museum. Walk through and you're sure to recognize a car featured in one of your favorite movies or television shows.  Take photos with your favorite cars and enjoy admiring a slightly different side of Hollywood.  Even better, some of these cars are actually for sale.

Michigan Adventures

We are happy to call the small village of Boyne Falls our home.  This small town is surrounded by a rolling countryside making it the home for a large ski resort and large recreation area.  There is skiing in the winter and boating in the summer but no matter when you come visit, there is no shortage of indoor or outdoor adventure.  Here are just a few of our favorite things to do in and around Boyne Falls.

Avalanche Bay Indoor Water Park If you are traveling with kids, this place is a MUST.  The kids can enjoy the arcade, kidzone, and the famous Splasherhorn that dumps 800 gallons of water every 15 minutes, and the adults can relax in the lazy river.  The water park is open year round and is always a comfortable 84 degrees.  If you're up for it, the surf simulator is pretty cool too.  Who would have thought you could go surfing while in Michigan? http://www.avalanchebay.com/

SkyDiving in Harbor Springs Are you brave enough to jump from an airplane?   Just a short drive from our hotel, you can experience the excitement of 120 mph free fall and the relaxing feeling of floating back down to the ground. Best Day-Trips Near Orlando

Orlando is praised for its incredible weather and plethera of theme parks but, as it turns out, there are other attractions and places to explore that aren't often mentioned in tour guides.  If you're willing to take a short 30 minute to an hour drive, we'll help show you some of our favorite day-trip destinations.  Get out there and see what Central Florida is all about.

Mosquito Lagoon If you happen to visit Florida in the summer, a trip to Mosquito Lagoon is a MUST.  When the sun goes down, the water will light up with an incredible glow.  Thanks to a large concentration of single-celled bioluminescent  organisms that light up like fireflies in the water.  Take a kayak tour and the stunning blue light.  Just don't forget your bug spray, it's called Mosquito Lagoon for a reason.

Park Avenue, Winter Park Did you know that Florida has its very own 'Rodeo Drive?'  This local nickname refers to Park Avenue in Winter Park.  Central Florida’s shopping, dining, and cultural showcase, Park Avenue boasts more than 140 boutiques, sidewalk cafes, and museums. This signature shopping street is bordered by stunning oak-canopied Central Park which plays host to seasonal art shows, concerts, exotic car shows, and fashion events. Don't miss this little gem, just north of Orlando.

Lake Walkes For those who don't get frightened too easily, head to Spook Hill in Lake Wales, Florida.  This hill has gained the reputation of being one of the most haunted locations in existence.  The legend states that an Indian town was plagued with raids from a huge gator and both the gator and the Indian warrior chief were killed in a final battle that created a swampy depression.  Later, pioneer riders noticed that their horses were laboring and breathing heavy near the ridge.  They named the area, Spook Hill.  Thrill seekers come from around the world to park their cars at the bottom of Spook Hill and experience the mysterious force that pushes the car right up to the top of the hill.

Our favorite All-in-one in Portsmouth

Portsmouth is a small city with a rich history.  In fact, it was settled in 1623 and is proud to claim the title of third-oldest city in the nation.  The still active port is full of endless brick sidewalks to stroll, boutique shops to pop into and Colonial, Federal and Georgian houses to tour.  And then there is the food.  Portsmouth offers an abundance of restaurants and cafes to check out.  One of our favorites, located in Market Square, is the The Portsmouth Gas Light Company.  Built in 1837, this historic building has stood the test of time, including Portsmouth's "great fires."  Here is a bit more on this 3-in-1 gem.

First Floor - Gas Light Grill Located on street level, the Gas Light Grill offers a variety of traditional pub items, such as homemade clam chowder, wood-fire grilled burgers and chicken sandwiches.  Stop by and grab a locally brewed draft beer.  The brunch here is also fantastic. Try the Twin Tournedos which are grilled filet mignon medallions topped with lobster meat, grilled asparagus and bearnaise sauce with home fries.  

Basement - Downtown Brick Oven Pizza & Pub This basement turned family restaurant offers some of the best pizza in Portsmouth.  The wood-fired brick oven burns traditional New England hard woods that give the pizza a unique smoke flavor. Speaking of the Portsmouth "great fires," if you look closely at the eastern wall of this part of the building, you can still see original brick that was charred by the flames. Enjoy the buffet, open Monday through Friday or stop by for a late night snack on Friday and Saturday nights from 11:00 pm to 2:00 am.

The Deck If you've spent the day on Market Square we suggest you stay for a bit longer.  At The Deck, you can enjoy a lush, casual setting in the city's largest courtyard venue.  This is a great place to wind down with friends, take in the sunset and enjoy some live music.  And when we say live music, we mean incredible live music.  Taylor Swift has been known to play here.

Third Floor For those looking for a more active end to the day, the Third Floor offers visitors a more vibrant nightlife and club scene.  Get there early as there is a cover charge starting at 10:00 pm.

St. Maarten Ocean Adventures

St. Maarten/St. Martin is the smallest island in the world that is shared by two nations, France and the Netherlands.  This tiny treasure offers an irresistable blend of French, Dutch and Caribbean culture, including beaches, watersports, shopping, fine dining and nightlife.  Since the Caribbean is known for it's fantastic snorkeling, scuba diving and surfing, we thought we would tell you the best ways to enjoy some outdoor island adventure, straight from our staff.

1. Coconut Reef Surf School If you have ever wanted to learn to surf, this is the place to do it.  Coconut Reef Surf School caters to beginners and the instructors are patient and extremely helpful.  Their love of surfing is infectious and you'll be riding your own waves in no time.  If he's available, ask for Anthony!  Don't forget to call ahead to ask about the conditions of the beach; sometimes the island is hit with kelp which can be an issue for surfing. 721-587-1503

2. Dive Adventures As we mentioned, St. Maarten is a great scubadiving destination.  The outlying wreck and reef sites offer fantastic dives and excellent photo opportunities.  The best part: Our water is warm and inviting and the marine life is abundant.  You'll surely see moray eels, sea turtles and stingrays.  Don't worry if you've never scuba dived before; the instructors can teach you or you can book a snorkeling session. 721-544-2640

3. Robinson Speed Boat Tours If you want to see more of the island, we suggest you spend a thrilling day out on the water with Robinson Speed Boat Tours.  These chartered excursions will take your group to the more secluded locations of St. Maarten.  The price ($109 per person) includes snorkel equipment, lunch on Pinel Island and drinks on the boat.  Jam to music, enjoy a few drinks and see the hidden beauty of St. Maarten. 590-690-755-988

Homegrown in Davis, CA

What's the saying? Oh yea, "you only live once!"  Well, we think that may have originated from someone living in Davis, which just happens to be located in Yolo County.  That's because this small gem, located in the Sacramento metro area is a simply tremendous place to visit or live.  California is famous for its amazing weather, farming and of course, wine.  You don't have to be in the middle of Napa to find fresh produce and home-grown wines.  Davis has everything you need and here is a short list of our favorites.

1. Vini Wine Bar Let's say you want to get a taste of California but being outside and wandering from vineyard to vineyard just isn't your thing.  Well, you will love Vini Wine Bar.  When you walk in, you'll be greeted by a friendly staff member who will walk you through the process of the self-serve tasting room.  That's right, self-served wine tasting!  You'll purchase a card at the bar that will be filled with any cash value you choose, then you are on your own.  Find a wine you want to try, place your tasting glass underneath, hold a button for 2 seconds then... viola!  You now have your 2 oz. sample of wine.   Take your time to read the descriptions and enjoy a cheese plate or other small plates.  Not a wine fan?  That's okay.  Vini also hosts a rotating selection of craft beers.  Happy Hour is from 4 pm to 6 pm and they are closed on Sundays.  Grab a cheese plate and a glass of the Flore de Moscato and enjoy! www.viniwinebar.com

2. Impossible Acres Depending on the time of year, this small, rustic family-owned farm is a blast to visit.  The farm is just west of Davis and is one of our favorite excursions.  The majority of what they grow is sold directly to people who head out to the farm to buy fresh produce or, for the farmer-at-heart, pick their own.  Pumpkin season is a blast!  The farm is open from May through the end of October. www.impossibleacres.com

3. Putah Creek Winery There are so many wineries in California to choose from.  Do yourself a favor and don't over-look Putah Creek Winery.  This is absolutely one of the best in California.  Visit the vineyard just outside of Davis which backs up to the breathtaking flora from the UC Davis Arboretum or ,if you are exploring downtown, stop by their tasting room.  Be sure to try the Unoaked Chardonnay! www.putahcreekwinery.com

Hidden Hawaii

Most visitors to Hawaii are familiar with traditional tourist activities, but if you want to see more of Honolulu and Oahu than just Waikiki Beach, check out some of our favorite and popular day-trips.  We want to help you experience Hawaii like a local and what better way to do that than to share the things we love to do.  Here are a few staff favorites from all of us at The Equus.

1. Manoa Valley Manoa Valley is located just minutes from downtown Honolulu and is an area that is often overlooked by tourists.  This drive takes you through a rainforest and ends at a place where you can walk to a beautiful waterfall.  Be sure to stop at the Manoa Marketplace for a quick snack and enjoy the specialty shops and island foods.  To get there: Drive west on Ala Wai Boulevard in Waikiki and make a right on McCully Street.  After crossing the H-1 freeway, a quick right takes you on to Metcalf Street which runs into University Avenue.  Take a left on University Avenue (near the University of Hawaii) then a right on E. Manoa Road.

2. Yokohama Bay Yokohama Bay, located on Oahu's Waianae coast, offers a long stretch of secluded sandy beach that is a great place for picnicking, hiking, shore fishing and watching our breathtaking sunsets.  The surf is calm during the summer, and is perfect for snorkeling , diving, swimming and shell collecting.  If you visit during the winter months, this is the best spot to watch professional surfers tackle large (sometimes 20 foot) waves. To get there: Take the H-1 West until it connects to Farrington Highway.  The beach is located at the end of Farrington Highway.  

3. Kananamoku Beach Sneak away to a more secluded beach while you are on vacation in Hawaii! Duke Kananamoku Beach, at the very west end of Waikiki, is a place where you can avoid the huge crowds, but still enjoy a beautiful view of the famed Diamond Head.  This beach curves slightly so you can see the entire stretch from beginning to end and it's very family friendly.  Be sure to check out the gorgeous lagoon but bring your reefwalkers or some other form of protective footwear because this shoreline has a rocky bottom.  If you visit the beach on a Friday night, we suggest staying late to enjoy the free "King's Jubilee" torch lighting ceremony with fireworks. A Taste of Europe in Gordonsville

You don't have to visit a bustling city to get quality food.  Gordonsville, Virginia may be a relatively small town where you would probably never expect to find authentic European-style food, but trust us, these are THE places to eat while you're in town.  We've put together a list of our favorites to send you on your very own taste of Europe tour.

1. Il Castelllo Italian Restaurant In the mood for some delicious Italian food? We can't say enough about the authentic experience and traditional Italian food at Il Castello Italian Restaurant & Pizza.  This place is an unexpected gem in Gordonsville.  Every guest is treated like a member of the family, the dough is hand-tossed and the rolls are to die for.  Don't expect any special frills, just great food! 2. Restaurant Pomme Nestled in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains is a charming restaurant that is an inviting recreation of the French Country-side. If you love French food, it doesn't get much more authentic than at Restaurant Pomme. We really like the Coquilles St. Jacques a La Catalone (pan-seared sea scallops with chorizo & leek sauce) but no matter what you order, you're meal becomes extra special when the Chef stops by your table for a quick visit. 3. Fabio's Pizza Pizza, pizza, pizza!  Fabio's can tackle any appetite you throw at them.  The pizzas are big and delicious and come in all styles from deep dish to thin crust.  The staff is always friendly and accommodating and the prices are reasonable for the amount of food you get.  Even if you aren't into pizza, don't worry, Fabio's pasta dishes are equally as good.  We recommend the White Gourmet pizza or the Chicken Parmesan for a pasta dish. 540-832-9900

A Guide to Tennessee Moonshine

Tennessee and the Appalachian region are steeped in history surrounding high-proof distilled spirits, referred to as moonshine.  For hundreds of years, mountain people hid their distilleries and illegally transported moonshine.  The good news is , it is now legally accessible right here in downtown Gatlinburg.  Here are our favorite places to learn about the history of moonshine and discover your favorite flavor.

1. Doc Collier Mooonshine Doc Collier Moonshine is a great place to taste some of the finest moonshine in Tennessee.  Our favorite aspect of this distillery is seeing some of the original equipment that William “Doc” Collier and his family used for generations to make their moonshine up in the mountains.  Be sure to try their one of a kind Moonshine Brandy! - 519 Parkway Gatlinburg, TN 37738

2. Sugarland The Sugarland Distillery not only offers guests tastings of their authentic Sugarlands Shine, but also offers live music.  We suggest taking the behind the-scenes tours of the production to see just how the moonshine is made.  Be sure to ask about the Tennessee barns and houses that were salvaged and repurposed to create the ambiance of the distillery featuring century-old wooden patchwork of color and age. - 805 Parkway, Gatlinburg, TN 37738

3. Ole Smoky Moonshine A visit to Ole Smoky Distillery is a true moonshine-lovers delight. As you approach the entrance, the distinct smell of cooking and fermenting grains takes over your senses.  Let the staff give you a step-by-step tour and tell you about the history of moonshine in East Tennessee.  After the tour, you’ll have a chance to enjoy free samples and choose your favorite to take home.  This makes a great gift.  The 128 proof Blue Flare is a very intense choice but very worth it. - 903 Parkway Ole Smoky Moonshine Holler, Gatlinburg, TN 37738

Oddly Entertaining in Las Vegas

Beyond the bustling nightlife and excitement of the Stip, Las Vegas is also known for its odd attractions.  Sin City has enough quirky activities to keep you busy for as long as your stay allows. 1. Dinner in the Sky This unique dining experience will quickly take you out of your comfort zone as you are strapped into your seat and hoisted 180 feet in the air. 2. National Atomic Testing Museum The National Atomic Testing Museum takes you through the history of the United States’ nuclear weapons program. The museum houses more than 12,000 pieces of history featured in six permanent exhibits which feature how the first bomb was initially developed, how it was tested and how it ended World War II. 3. The Big Shot Located at the Stratosphere Hotel-Casino, the Big Shot is one adrenaline-inducing ride that cannot be missed. Standing approximately 1,087 feet  high, this thrilling ride drops multiple times with a maximum drop of 160 feet. Wilkes-Barre Outdoor Adventures

Whenever you're traveling to a new city, it's easy to get caught up in the history of the buildings, the museums and all of the different architecture. While all of these attractions are great options for how to spend your day, there is something to be said about spending time outdoors. Wilkes-Barre offers excellent outside activities and our staff at The Woodlands Inn has pulled together our favorites to help you narrow it down. Have fun and get outside!  

1. Ricketts Glen State Park Ricketts Glen State Park is located about 30 minutes from Wilkes-Barre and is a great day-trip destination.  The park is 13,050 acres and contains hiking trails with cascading waterfalls, a lake-side beach, camp grounds, fishing, boating (rentals available during summer months), and simply beautiful views.  Our favorite waterfall is the stunning 94-foot Gonoga Falls. 695 PA-487 Benton, PA 17814.

2. The River Common The River Common is located in downtown Wilkes-Barre right off of the Susquehanna River and is the setting for seasonal farmer’s markets, food vendors, live performances by local bands and, of course, fishing. The River Common is a local landmark and the 16th oldest park in America.  The park, which spans a half a mile of riverbank, includes a 750-person amphitheater, paved walk-ways and a fishing pier. 3. Seven Tubs Natural Area Seven Tubs is a nature park located about 20 minutes from Wilkes-Barre. The park is known for its natural tubs  or pools that were created from glacial meltwater throughout.  Take a dip in the crystal clear water, admire waterfalls or rest along the ridge for breathtaking views. Century House’s Enjoy One Share One Giving Program

The staff at the Century House, in Latham, New York, reallyembraces the spirit of giving that has been a staple of the hotel’s businesssince opening more than 65 years ago. This giving spirit extends beyond just our guest experience; we also want to give back to the community that has embraced us and helped us build such a tremendous business.

A Tradition of Hospitality and Hope

Our charming, family-owned hotel and restaurant, opened in 1949 by Jim and Dorothy O’Hearn, and is steeped in the tradition of providing an inviting, comfortable place for friends, family, neighbors and travelers to enjoy a quality meal, share experiences and feel at home. From the very beginning, The Century House has demonstrated an ongoing commitment to the community.

Hunger is an issue in our community and we wanted to do something to help those in need.  Our thoughtful staff came up with our Enjoy One Share One program.  This is a special program where our hotel donates a meal to a local soup kitchen for each room night sold and each meal served in the restaurant.

We are excited to share the success of this program and can proudly say that since the program began, we have donated more than half a million meals. Even our guests have openly told us how much they appreciate this program, notably saying, “This makes a very enjoyable meal much more meaningful! Thank you so much for your community involvement” and “This is a beautiful idea that helps many!”

But our giving doesn’t stop there. Through a partnership with the Regional Food Bank of Northeastern New York, our staff volunteers every month for a number of local soup kitchens to serve meals and give the regular soup kitchen staff a day off. The soup kitchen volunteers work hard and we have staff members who are fully capable of filling in to give them some much deserved down time.

We are very proud of this program.  We know that people can fall on hard times, any of us could, and this program provides a little support and encouragement to those who need it most.

Let it Ride! Gambling in Biloxi

Biloxi itself is a "hidden gem" full of sun, sand and historic landmarks. The casinos in Biloxi, which were known for their offshore barges, were hit hard by Hurricane Katrina in 2005.  While the barges were not rebuilt,  the casinos have rebuilt their main buildings and hotels further inland and the renovations are stunning.  Here are a few of our favorite places to gamble on the Gulf Coast.

1. Boomtown Casino Known as Biloxi's "local's casino," Boomtown is also our favorite.  This casino isn't about the glitz and glamour and instead it is modeled in the style of a frontier settlement. 2. Palace Casino Resort We like Palace Casino Resort because it is the only non-smoking gambling venue on the Gulf Coast.  The casino is one of the smallest in Biloxi but it includes all of the traditional games like Black Jack, Craps, Roulette and slots. 3. Beau Rivage Resort & Casino Beau Rivage brings the style and luxury of Las Vegas to Mississippi's Gulf Coast.  The brain child of Las Vegas legend, Steve Wynn, the hotel tower is the tallest structure in the state of Mississippi and resembles the glamour of his other well known creations, like the Mirage and Bellagio.  If price is not an issue, this is the place to go.  You'll see some of the best entertainment acts and twice the gaming tables of any other local casino. 875 Beach Blvd. 888-595-2534.

Fort Hunter Mansion and Park Fort Hunter was originally settled in 1725 and overlooks the beautiful Susquehanna River.  The property has served as a war fort, a hub for frontier commerce and a private estate.  Be sure to visit the Mansion, Tavern House, Centennial Barn and Covered Bridge, all located on the grounds.  5300 North Front Street. 717-599-5397.    

2. National Civil War Museum Our region was deeply affected by the Civil War with many seemingly normal locations transformed into battlegrounds.  We suggest the short drive to Harrisburg to see the National Civil War Museum.  This museum walks you through this history-making time period and highlights viewpoints from both the North and the South, military and civilian.  It's incredible to feel the emotions as you walk the halls and experience Bull Run, Shiloh, Vicksburg, Chancellorsville, Wilderness, Antietam, and of course, Gettysburg.  We particularly like that the tours are self-guided, meaning there is no need to rush through all the artifacts, manuscripts and photographs. 1 Lincoln Circle at Reservoir Park, Harrisburg, Pennsylvania. 717-260-1861

3. Hershey Theatre This charming theater was completed in 1933 as part of Mr. Hershey's "Great Building Campaign" during the Great Depression.  The theatre quickly became center stage to the world's leading performers and is still a local favorite for live entertainment.  The architecture is breathtaking and visitors are in awe of the floor-to-ceiling tile grand lobby.  Be sure to check their web site for upcoming shows during your visit.  www.hersheytheatre.com.  15 E. 4. Antique Automobile Club of American Museum You don't have to love old cars to enjoy this fun, interactive museum featuring cars, buses, motorcylces and more, from the 1700s through the 1970s.  It's amazing to see the evolution of transportation during those times!  The automobile's sit in front of colorful backdrops depicting life during their time period.  Ask the guides to show you the bus from the movie Forrest Gump. 161 Museum Drive. 717-566-7100.

Beyond the Beach

With 34 miles of uninterrupted beaches, South Padre Island is Texas' own little piece of paradise. While the beach may be the main attraction, our staff at Suites of Sunchase want visitors to know that there is more to South Padre than just beaches. Check out some of our favorite places to visit and enjoy the island.

1. Schlitterbahn Waterpark Schlitterbahn water parks are often rated as some of the best in the world, and we are excited to have one on the island. Take a break from the beach and enjoy 24-acres of fun including: 13 water slides, four uphill water coasters, swim up bars, rivers and plenty of areas for the kids to play.  2. Museums of Port Isabel The area that consists of South Padre and Port Isabel is full of history. Take a short drive across the Queen Isabella Causeway and visit the Museums of Port Isabel. Once you're there, gain access to port and island history at the Port Isabel Lighthouse, Port Isabel Historical Museum and Treasures of the Gulf Museum. See artifacts from the Mexican American War, explore three 1554 Spanish shipwrecks and climb to the top of the lighthouse for amazing views. For information call 956-943-7602.

3. Sea Turtle Inc. Vist and admire endangered sea turtles - some of the ocean's most majestic creatures. At Sea Turtle Inc. guests can learn more through live turtle shows, guided tours and educational presentations. Montana Meanderings

No trip to Montana is complete without spending some quality time hiking or just exploring the Livingston area. Our hotel staff has put together some of their favorite places to visit and see the beauty of Montana first hand.

1. Passage Creek Falls Passage Creek Falls is a popular destination for day hikers who don't have a lot of time to spend on the trails. This hike is a quick and easy 4 miles along a wide, smooth trail. The falls are absolutely beautiful and the area is shaded and cool, which makes it a great place to relax and enjoy the sounds of the falls. This trail is also popular for horseback riding so please be prepared to step to the side and let the horses safely pass.

2. Pine Creek Falls and Pine Creek Lake Pine Creek Lake is a popular destination for many Livingston locals. This is a moderately strenuous trek that leads to a stunning alpine lake. For those that don't want to go quite that far, just 1 mile down Pine Creek Trail is Pine Creek Falls. The ice-cold mountain runoff cascading down the cliffs is beautiful. Enhance your experience by standing in the middle of the foot bridge to feel the mist from the falls. You may even spot a Black Bear while in the Pine Creek area. Avoid snow and ice by hiking between July and September.

3. South Fork Deep Creek This is a wonderful trail located just minutes from Livingston. Head into the Absaroka-Beartooth Wilderness and enjoy a mix of forests and flower-laden meadows. Depending on the time of year there are berries ripe for the picking. This is lightly used trail and it offers hikers a variety of terrain and is the best choice for those looking to get into the woods a bit.
