Still in the hospital with my mom. There probably won't be any posts for a little while.
The Gloria Record - "Good Morning, Providence" By the time this post goes up, my mom will have been in surgery for about three hours. It's a pretty intense procedure, so if you pray, wish, hope, bang on drums, arrange crystals, etc., please send a thought her way. (Now I'm wondering if queued posts go up in local time or home time. Looking for distractions.) [ed: just learned it's home time, so I'm publishing this at 5:30am local.]
Eddie Cochran - "Summertime Blues" I'm in New York. It's miserably hot and humid. I'll be here for a couple days then I'm heading down to Philly for a few weeks. I'll try my best to keep the blog updated, but there'll likely be a few missed days.
Iron & Wine - "Walking Far from Home" I could write quite a bit about Iron & Wine, but I'm tired and want to sleep. It's not even nine o'clock yet, but I've had enough. [ed: I wrote a lengthy paragraph here whining about my sleep schedule, jetlag, etc., but you didn't want to read that, did you?] I'll save my thoughts on Sam Beam for the next time I wake up with one of his songs stuck in my head. I saw sickness blooming fruit trees. I saw blood and a bit of it was mine. I saw children in a river, but their lips were still dry.
Dirty Projectors - "Not Having Found" Life is exhausting sometimes... Around the time that these guys put out Rise Above, they were doing a killer live version of this song with Angel playing the woodwind melody on flute, over sparse drums, while Dave and Amber launched into a bit of the band's patented hocketing; it was awesome. That would have been about six years ago, I guess. Time is the worst. Maybe the truth in searching is not having found.
M83 - "Graveyard Girl" I know it fits with the song's lyrics, but the spoken word bit is really unfortunate. She worships Satan like a father, but dreams of a sister like Molly Ringwald.
2Pac (Makaveli) - "To Live & Die in L.A." The Dre diss at the end always bums me out. Fuck Suge Knight. Writing to my peoples when they ask for pictures, thinking Cali just fun and bitches.
Silversun Pickups - "Lazy Eye" When I first heard this song I thought it was Tegan and Sara. Then I thought it was the Smashing Pumpkins.
Grandaddy - "The Crystal Lake" Have a great weekend! I've gotta get out of here and find my way again.
The Black Eyed Peas - "Boom Boom Pow" Needless to say, this was a horrible morning. This song is a fantastic example of just how terrifying music can be at its worst. LA/OC people: remember when these guys were a legitimate hip-hop group in the '90s? I wonder what Eazy-E would say had he lived to see what his Ruthless signees have become.
The Streets - "Could Well Be In" This album is so good. I'm heading to Philadelphia this afternoon for the rest of the week. Posts are queued through Friday—be back Monday.
Britney Spears - "...Baby One More Time" Yeah...
Holopaw - "Igloo Glass" Snowflakes whip past my ears, singing songs with glass-pitched choruses (like singing saws with cobra hips), rushing in with stinging kisses.
Bright Eyes - "The Calendar Hung Itself" Best songwriter of our generation? The argument can certainly be made. It was interesting being the same age as Conor Oberst and growing up along with his songs over the last 14(-ish) years—a constant reminder of someone who is far more talented than you will ever be. Seriously though, he provided the perfect, ever-changing soundtrack to a lot of strange years. In other news, my sleep schedule is still all fucked up. I should have stayed in Japan. I kissed a girl with a broken jaw that her father gave to her. She had eyes bright enough to burn me—they reminded me of yours.
Purity Ring - "Fineshrine" Still severely jetlagged. Anyone have any tips? Cut open my sternum and pull my little ribs around you.
Eels - "Elizabeth on the Bathroom Floor" I'm back from Japan and suffering from some crazy jetlag. Went to a funeral first thing Monday morning and that is likely why Eels is stuck in my head. I'm hoping tonight is the night I get some normal sleep and can return to my life of doing nothing. I could try, but waking up is harder when you want to die.
Pixies - "Bone Machine" This song is perfect. Our love is rice and beans and horse's lard.
