Minori had gone around the office on Christmas morning and left a little something for her co-workers. It was hard to know what to buy for people, and considering she had barely spoken to most of them, it was even harder this year than it usually was.

So, Minori had opted on something fairly easy. Everyone received a mug with a different animal in a Santa hat and/or ugly sweater on it, alone with a box of candy cane tea and a Christmas card. 

Wishing you and yours a happy Christmas and New Year! Thanks for putting up with me! May we all become better friends in 2018!

The only two people that she left out were Rod and Georgia, and that was because they were the whole reason she had come here in the first place. For them, she had something a bit more personal. 

Another gift? And here he thought people feared him in the office. Well, it could just be the holiday season. After all, he also left a batch of homemade cookies for his coworkers. Vaughn scratched the back of his head and started at the contents laid out in front of him. He picked up the Christmas card and read through it. 

“Minori, huh?” he mumbled and set it down arbitrarily on the desk. He made cookies so at least they were even. Still, did this mean he would have to go up to her in person to show his gratitude? He hoped not.

Caleb walked into the office early in the morning with two reusable bags containing an assortment of stuffed animals. Because he would be working the night shift again, it was best to leave the gifts as early as possible so they could pick them up by the end of the day. He wasn’t close enough to his co-workers to know of their interests, but in general, he knew they liked animals. And so, he chose a stuffed animal based on what he believed his recipient loved the most.

Tied to all of them in ribbon was a note with the words Happy Holidays with a paw print design at the end. He didn’t put either of his names on them, but they’d probably be able to guess who left the stuffed animals regardless.

To be completely honest, receiving a gift was a bit odd. Especially something like this. Normally there would be some baked goods and hot chocolate for the holidays but not toys. Stuffed animals just seemed childish and cutesy. Not like him at all. He was sure other coworkers were more into that kind of stuff which was fine for them. Still, Vaughn picked the horse stuffed animal. 

“I’ll thank him later...I guess,” he muttered.

“Hey Dr. Hardin~!” Lillian poked her head into one of the exam rooms that Vaughn occupied. She had just returned from a lunch run and stepped into the room with two bags in her hand. “I went to grab lunch and grabbed something for you too, since you said that you didn’t bring anything today!”

She handed him the bag with a grin. “It’s mushroom raviolis! I remember you saying you liked mushrooms like, forever ago. I hope I remembered right!” She gestured her own bag, smile still wide. “I got myself some spaghetti, hehe~” She motioned for him to follow her. “Here, come eat in the staff room since we have a table in there! You’ve been stuck in here for so long already anyways.”

It was about lunch time and Vaughn forgot his damn lunch. Great. Well he was busy with his work to pack a lunch anyway. Maybe he could grab something out really quick or... As if on cue, one of the more chipper employees had poked her head in with a couple of lunches in hand. 

Vaughn turned toward the toothy grinned girl with a bit of a frown. He accepted the bag anyway. He appreciated the gesture greatly even if it didn’t show on his face. She didn’t have to do this though. He opened his mouth to give his gratitude but then he heard the catch. Eating in the staff room. He would much prefer his the exam room or the office over the staff room.

“Thank you for this, but–” he glanced back at his office, longingly–“I have work that just can’t be neglected.”

Boss Number 2 - Mino and Vaughn

Minori hadn’t seen her second boss when she had been in on her first day, although she had been told he would be around on her second day. The brunette was a little bit nervous about meeting him, but she was more excited than anything. If he was anything like Rod, she had a feeling they would get along swimmingly.

And why wouldn’t he be like Rod? In her mind, a vet was always someone super kind and gentle. You had to be like that to really bond with animals! Or so she assumed… 

Of course, in this case, she was dead wrong. 

As Minori sauntered in to the office on her second day, she stopped to hang up her things and then peered over to one of the open office doors. Supposedly, Vaughn was going to be in this morning, and she wanted to make sure she made a good first impression. 

So, she stopped by the coffee maker and mixed up two cups of coffee and strode toward the door. A bright smile was on her face as she paused outside the door and nudged it open a little further with her foot.

“Knock knock!” she figured he was probably getting ready for the first patients of the day, so she didn’t want to completely barge in. “Good morning, Doctor! I just wanted to introduce myself before I get to work. I brought you coffee!”

The newest addition to the veterinarian clinic was supposed to have arrived. Why he hadn’t seen her on her first day was a mystery. One could imagine he wasn’t too pleased with that. He heard Rod took care of orientation or at least saw her on the first day. Vaughn was getting ready for the scheduled patients like usual so he really couldn't be bothered with more allotted time exchanging pleasantries than necessary. 

When she came in with coffee and a bright and happy attitude, it almost natural for him to groan at least a little. Another one that was bright and happy. As if the clinic needed any more of that. He turned to face her with a less than pleased expression wiped on his face. 

“Right... Well I’m not sure why you chose to introduce yourself to me on the second day of being here but if thiat’s all you came for, you can see yourself out.” 

He dismissed her with a wave of his hand. Vaughn wasn’t really in the mood to make small talk and play ice breaker games. Though, he did always hate those. Anyway, the longer she stood there when she could be getting ready like everyone else just irated him more and more. He really didn’t need any slackers wasting his time or being inefficient to the business.

BTTP; A Real Pizza Work || Vaughn & Chelsea

How rude! She gasped, spinning it into a friendly, mock offense. “What? I know you’re a little shy but you can at least say you know me.” The event poster was plastered behind the ticketer, boasting that students could bring a plus one guest, and Chelsea gestured vaguely to it. The I.D. could be waived if he just helped her out a little. 

Thinking he might need a little persuasion, she continued in the most subtle of Chelsea ways. “I know you didn’t want to come tonight but I said I’d make it up to you. Anything you want. What kind of deal is that to pass up!” She gave him an imploring look, hoping he’d go along with it this time. What a guy, denying a sweet girl like herself!  

He groaned softly, his stare like daggers, piercing into her own bright, friendly gaze. He crossed his arms and rolled his eyes. The longer they just stood there, the longer they kept the others behind them up. 

His eyes were drawn to the poster advertising that plus one thing. Just how badly was this girl trying to get into the party? He couldn’t understand how or why she wanted to get into this party so badly. It was just another annoying social gathering. Finally, he sighed and leaned down far enough to mutter something in her ear.

“You owe me for this.”

Vaughn straightened up with his hands in his pockets and stared down the ticketer. He dug through one of his pockets for his I.D. and flashed it to the guy. Once approved, he began to walk past the man. Stopping shoulder to shoulder with the guy, he looked between the ticketer and the girl.

“She’s with me,” he said in the most uninterested, monotonous voice he could muster. The guy must of bought it or just didn’t want to deal with a couple of bratty students holding up the line.

BTTP; A Real Pizza Work || Vaughn & Chelsea

“My I.D.? Oh, yeah, hold on.” Chelsea made a show of checking her pocket and then her face dropped. Her hand moved to her other pocket. Nothing. Then her back pocket. Again, nothing. Then to the pocket of her jacket before patting herself down once more. “Uh… I think I… forgot it?” She looked up apologetically at the person.

Their mouth set into a hard line, but before they could deny her Chelsea clasped her hands together. “Pleasee! It’s not like I’m not a student.” She cast around for an idea or a distraction to cause, and her eyes sat on the guy behind her. He looked weirdly familiar. Impulsive as always, she grabbed him by the arm and dragged him over. “He’s my friend! He can vouch for me!” She looked up at him with pleading eyes. Surely he wouldn’t deny such a pretty lady! 

Vaughn wasn’t really the type to go to these social gatherings. Especially not a party. He would much rather be off in his dorm but due to the persistent nagging from his roommate, he had been dragged along. He knew that this roommate would end up finding their actual friends and probably going home with them so what was even the point of going? He was just going to sit in the corner like some weird kid who didn’t belong there. Still, there he was waiting in line for this exclusive party that even had a security guard in front. 

If coming here wasn’t bad enough, some random chick grabbed a hold of him and dragged him into her mess with the security guard. 

“The hell?” he muttered.

Now, Vaughn knew damn well this chick was not a student. It wasn’t like he really paid attention to who went to his school; socializing was less important to him. That aside, he could tell she was bluffing about being a student. So could the security guard as their focus was dead set on this girl.

“Friends is a strong word, don’t you think?” She did look oddly familiar. “If anything, we’re acquaintances. Hardly.”

On the front counter was a small bag filled with sugar cookies, a few small candy canes, and a few pieces of assorted candy. Attached to said bag was a short note that read:

Being the boss of most of the recipients and a coworker to a couple others, Vaughn felt obligated to do something nice. Now they can stop complaining about him and they can’t say he never did anything nice for them. And yes, those cookies were homemade.

Vaughn wasn’t really one to dress up so formally for occasions like this. After all, the man wears scrubs on most days. He didn’t bother with a tie of any sort as he felt it was kind of restricting. This was...good enough, right?

Vet Check Up (1)

Some days were easier than others. Today he had some regulars who were responsible pet owners who came for their pets’ daily checkup. One client, in particular, was the easiest to deal with. She came on time, asked relevant questions, and was a bit more on the reserved side. 

“Freya? If you will, please follow me.” He nodded his head in the direction of one of the rooms. 

He kept his clipboard attached to him and opened the door to one of the rooms. His fingers lightly drummed the clipboard as he waited for her to get settled in. This was one of the times Vaughn was obligated to be nicer to clients since they were his source of income. Apparently, he has been told he’s not the friendliest at times. 

“How are you?” He went through the necessary pleasantries as he entered some information on the computer in the room.

🍻Making Pour Decisions 🍻|| Georgia and Vaughn

It was close to closing time and Vaughn wasn’t anticipating any more appointments today. So, he headed to his office, made himself comfortable and started organizing and finishing up some paperwork. He had gotten a large majority of it done when someone appeared at the door frame. He didn’t look up, but he could feel their presence. Even though he was occupied with filling out a sheet, he still greeted them without looking up.

“What do you need?” he asked in the most monotonous voice he could manage. Vaughn was trying not to sound angry or bitter as he has been told he tends to come off as such. On the off chance that it was a client, he wouldn’t want to drive them away because of his lack of social skills. 

“Oh, it’s you.” He removed his eyes from the files and sat back in his chair, twirling the pen between his finger. “Is it important? If not, there’s the door.” he jabbed one end of the pen towards the door.

Standing at the door, was one of his coworkers, Georgia. She was fine inside of the work environment. She was responsible and got things done on time and correctly. Outside of work, that was a different story. Vaughn recalls a couple times when she approached him wanting to make small talk for whatever reason. He dismissed her, without hesitation. They didn’t talk much, but the times they did makes up for their usual lack of conversation. At times it seemed like she had a mouth bigger than her head.

Comfortable Silence || Nami & Vaughn

“I found a squirrel outside the Apartments.” Nami stated casually as she practically strolled into Vaughn apartment. She carried something small in a soft quilt.

She and Vaughn had met a few months back on pure accident. One of the vet’s animals got loose somehow and made it’s way up to the Radio Station. Nami was happy to return the pet, seeing as she had some sort of odd calming effect on the creature, and met Vaughn. Sure, they weren’t friends yet then, but Nami was intrigued.

When she saw him again outside of work, she decided to talk to him. He turned out to not be much of a talker, but neither was she and somehow they had  found a comfortable silence between them. Now Nami had no one else to turn to when she was bored, and Vaughn always had a comforting vibe even if he was a touch odd at times. Which led her to this moment.

“Seems young, has fur but isn’t too big and is pretty docile. I think it’s leg is hurt. Think you can take a look, Tex?”

“Ugh. You,” he groaned. 

He had met this girl, Nami, back a few months ago when a pet escaped. They merely exchanged pleasantries but even that was too much interaction with a stranger. She seemed odd when he first met her but he was at least grateful she returned the pet back to the clinic. Now she was just invading his space and interrupting his moment of peace.

It didn’t dawn on him that she had just strolled into his apartment carelessly. She started making herself comfortable, even though they hadn’t even become friends. He made a mental note to lock the doors next time. Though, he never imagined it would be a problem since no one would ever come to visit him.

“What the hell are you even doing in my apartment? And what’s with that dumb nickname?” He turned to the girl going on about the squirrel. 

He was a vet for small animals, sure, but that didn’t include wild animals. The last thing he needed was some wild squirrel and this girl taking up space in his own apartment. People bothered him enough at work and now his personal space was being invaded. Isn’t this illegal?

Lunch Time Meeting || Rebecca and Vaughn

Rebecca went down to the building’s food court and picked up some grub. Honestly today she didn’t have enough time to go out of the building due to client meetings and drafts that needed to be due, but she was going to have her lunch damn it. If anything she’d push the designs back ten minutes and rush through a client meeting or two.

It wasn’t long before she got herself her sandwich and a warm tea. After it, it was the season, and any bit of warmth was welcomed even indoors. As scoured the area for a clear table, seeing many were taken. One had a line man sitting at it. He seemed…. perhaps intentionally alone? None the less Rebecca made her way towards him.

“Hey there. This seat taken?” Rebecca asked the man patting the seat across from him. He looked like he was in a set of scrubs but couldn’t quite see the logo. Maybe he was a doctor or a vet?

When he didn’t pack his lunch, which admittedly was not often, Vaughn would head down to the food court to grab a quick bite. He considered bringing it to his office and eating it there but he didn’t want to leave crumbs everywhere. Anyway, today was just one that he wanted to get out of the office.

He found an empty table and sat down at it. Hopefully, people would get the hint that he was trying to spend his lunch break alone in peace. Vaughn didn’t spend a lot of time with people, more so with animals, but he still tried to keep human interaction down to a minimum. Of course, that didn’t seem to last too long. He had just started eating when he was interrupted by someone. Reluctantly, he looked up at the woman who addressed him.

“...” Oh great, she’s going to sit there, wasn’t she? Maybe he should have stayed in the office. “No.” 

He kept his attention back down towards the sandwich. He could only hope to Goddess that she wouldn’t start talking to him. Small talk was not his forte. Talk in general was not really his forte and he preferred to keep it that way.

Privileged & Oblivious || Vaughn & Rosalind

Part of becoming a new pet owner involved starting regular check ups. Rosalind, responsible and over flowing with money, wasted no time in setting up such an appointment with the vets office that was so helpfully located near the building. Her newly adopted cat, with long hair and the features of a maine coon, was lovingly named Puck as he proved too smart for her own good. Regardless, she was in love with him and wanted the best. The visit didn’t take all that long and afterward both owner and cat, the latter in a spacious yet portable cat carrier, were by the front desk finishing up the payment process. The vet was, well, he’d been very short with her but he seemed knowledgeable, even if he was immune to her small talk.

Outside, she stopped for a few moments to do something on her phone, not noticing the vet following her out, his shift over. Finished with her phone, she picked up her cat carrier and headed off. There was a very nice little shortcut she had discovered recently that let right out near the Fairview Apartments! It was very nice, if a little dark and took her down a narrow alley, but she didn’t mind. She continued on her way, heedless of anyone around her.

Working with animals all day was something that he had wanted to do when he was younger and it was still something he enjoyed. However, at the end of the day, Vaughn was admittedly tired and maybe a little grumpier than usual for his last appointment. His client, Rosalind, wanted to make small talk while he just wanted to go home. He nipped the small talk in the bud and was direct about what they were both there for. 

He was wrapping up the visit with Rosalind and Puck, who was way too smart for his owner no offense to her. There wasn’t a lot of staff who stayed behind until closing time which was nice. Fewer people he was obligated to say goodnight to on the way out. He sighed as he gathered his things and headed out the door, finally. 

Normally, he would just head home and not bother to look the other direction but he ended up being right his last client who was too distracted by her phone. He rolled his eyes but thankfully she was moving along. Maybe not in the right direction. She was headed towards the alley, an undoubtedly sketchy place.  

“...” Should he say something? She was already a little too far for him to call out to her. He awkwardly trailed behind her keeping enough distance. Was she really naïve enough to go down a dark alley? Sure enough, she was. Vaughn sighed. The right thing to do would be to warn her against the dark alley, no matter if she truly lacked the common sense. 

“Hey, I suggest you don’t go that way,” he called out to her. He had stopped walking and was halfway turned around to go back in the other direction.
