I just read in a text by Monique W. Morris that “.09 percent of the degrees earned by Black Americans are professional degrees, such as law degrees, medical degrees, and business degrees”.
I AM OUTRAGED.
What this fact brought me to was this. Many of my friends, as I was making my way through college, were Caribbean and Hispanic/Latino. A lot of what was said to me about their parent’s expectations was that they could only go to school for ONE of three things... Law, Engineering or Medicine. In thinking about what drives our communities and our economies up... there is a reason why these were the expectations of those parents.
After discovering this statistic, I feel I should put the same expectations on my students (aka children) once they come.
Then I start to reflect more about why this may be. Is it really that we are not pursuing these degrees? Are we tapping out before we can get to this level of mastery in education? Are we only pushed towards the liberal arts degrees because the curricula are more accessible? Is the education system failing us at such an alarming rate that we don’t even imagine ourselves in these positions?
Think about it. Who do you turn to for services? Who do you trust more? Why?
How could we get to the bottom line of this?
