hello. i’m jap. i write for work and this blog is my attempt at remembering that writing can exist outside deadlines. i collect screenshots, incoherent thoughts and mental notes i keep telling myself i’ll turn into essays someday (i probably won’t). most things here are first drafts. minimally edited, rarely proofread. excuse the grammar errors, typos, unfinished thoughts and sentences that made sense to me at 1am. my thoughts here are mine alone and don’t represent my employer, publications i write for, or organizations i’m affiliated with.

Ang Babae sa Septic Tank 4 is one of the funniest local plays I’ve seen in a while. Sobrang baliw. Actually, I don’t think I’ve ever laughed that hard inside a theater. And underneath all the chaos and comedy is a genuine affection for Philippine theater.

Bukod sa ilang oras ng tawa at palakpak, siguro ang pinakanakakatuwang takeaway dito ay this show knows exactly what Philippine theater is up against—the challenges, the demands, and the compromises it constantly has to make. Pero kahit ganon, lalabas ka ng teatro na hindi lang tawang-tawa, kundi may panibagong appreciation para sa Philippine theater na patuloy itong mageevolve, hahanap ng paraan para mabuhay, at magpapatuloy na magkuwento, magpatawa, magpaiyak, at magbigay ng mga experience na tanging live theater lang ang kayang magbigay.

Who actually said what?

This whole hullabaloo on Gorebox and Risa Hontiveros has honestly become a pretty good test of how we process information online—whether we actually go beyond headlines, watch/read primary sources, and separate different statements from different people instead of flattening everything into one narrative for laughs and memes.

Because I’ve been seeing people conflate statements and events involving CICC, Remulla, BBM and Risa as if they all said or proposed the same thing: banning games.

From what was actually discussed, Risa did not talk about banning games. The point raised was inviting Gorebox to participate in the Senate investigation as a resource person—meaning someone who can provide information and context, not someone being penalized or put on trial.

Additionally, I’ve been seeing reactions framed as “why not go after the parents?” or “why not investigate the gun owner instead?” as if inviting game-related stakeholders automatically means nobody else is being asked to account for their role.

But based on an interview, the Senate inquiry wasn’t limited to one angle. Resource persons invited reportedly include DepEd, DSWD, PNP Tacloban, the victim’s parents, the parents of the involved minors and even the aunt who owned the firearm. They also invited the Game Developers Association of the Philippines. Gorebox (which declined), was also invited in the hopes of getting answers about

And she also explained why Gorebox was invited in the first place: they wanted to ask the developer about safeguards they previously mentioned in their communication with the committee and in their statement to Philippine Daily Inquirer, and whether those safeguards are actually being implemented—not just by Gorebox, but by platforms where the game is played.

She referenced that Roblox developers had participated in a previous hearing (even remotely), and framed the inquiry around understanding what protections exist, whether they’re enough and whether policies around child safety, parental support and school awareness need strengthening.

You can disagree with that approach. You can think game developers shouldn’t be part of the conversation. You can question whether games are being overemphasized. But at least disagree with what was actually said, not a version compressed into screenshots, headlines and meme reposts.

life lately: June

june 1: nose bled out of nowhere june 3: watched set A of Virgin Lab Fest. The shows were amazing. june 7: went to UP for a photo walk

june 9 - 11: led 2 prod works june 13: ran 10K at the Manila Marathon. june 17-21: personal vacation. Went to Iloilo, Bacolod and Gigantes with friends.

june 23: back to work. Went to PAGASA to do a shoot for a video feature. june 24: 8:30 am event at Hyatt for ROG 20th anniversary june 25: Went to the gala night of Ang Babae sa Septic Tank 4. Enjoyed the show too much; I don't know where to start with my review article.

june 26: submitted two tech articles lol june 27: writing my review of PETASepticTank4 --- trying to log weekly activities in bullets for now because when writing is already your full-time job, longform journaling can start to feel like unpaid OT lol bye
