Birthday Incoming

so. yeah hi what it says on the tin. I'm Ash (he/it) and i am celebrating my third full decade on this great big fancy rock in about a month. Lifes started looking up for us recently so we (hopefully) dont need help on bills, but i cant pass up an opportunity it yell about my birthday (its the most important day of ones personal calendar! Your personal new year!) So i figured id make a little pinned post about it :3

So I do art and apparently some homebrew stuff now and I'd love for you to go check out my patreon where i drop new goodies as often as i can manage. The current project is Monster Bay worldbuilding.

"my inner vision is legally blind" is such a fun way to describe my flavor of that symptom. Like. I CAN picture stuff in my mind. But its like im looking at it through several layers of very thin gauze. I can see more shapes and movement and sometimes colors. But details? The whole picture? Nah i cant even imagine my mamas face like that and it looks like mine.

This post has made me uncomfortably aware that i do not imagine my face, i internally place the point on my actual face and then extrapolate what it looks like based on the physical sensation. But this 100% tracks with why i cant fucking draw myself realistically. That function is the same one i use in reverse to get art on the paper.

Oh also if i see yall demonizing big rigs its on fucking sight. Big trucks are dangerous but to get behind the wheel of one you need special certifications. To haul dangerous chemicals you need a hazmat certification which needs to be renewed every so often. The biggest danger with trucking isnt the drivers themselves most of the time. Its the bossman expecting you to run overweight loads cross country with so little time to sleep we have documented psychological phenomena like the black dog thats considered fucking normal despite being a sign of chronic and severe sleep deprivation. Getting paid per mile is a great incentive to kill yourself slowly and raise the risk that you drive your several ton death machine into a crowd because you passed out at the wheel. But we blame the drivers and not the people dangling their lives by a string in front of their windshield so they keep going.

My dad used to drive big rigs cross country for a while while us kids were still babies and when i got older he would tell us stories. And one that stuck in my head for reasons im only understanding as an adult is the one where dad saw an out of control rig on a mostly open road so after trying to ping him on the radio and getting nothing he eased infront of the other truck and manually braked him. Turns out dude died. At the wheel of a loaded rig. And was set to turn into a multi ton missile wherever he went off the road. And when i see people talking about how dangerous trucks are, i think about that man who died at work in a field that uses you until you drop and how people would have assumed negligence if his corpse HAD been found in a wreck with other people. And yeah i get a little pissed about it.

reminder for all hockey fans:

netflix is making a hockey show called "the sticks" that is based on a very real tragedy that occured in canada in 2018.

the show follows a minnesota high school team after their bus crashes and coming back to hockey afterwards.

in 2018, the humboldt broncos' (a junior A team made up of 18-22 year olds) bus was hit by a tractor trailer on a highway intersection. 16 people (10 players, 2 coaches, and 4 team staff members) were killed, along with 13 other players severely injured.

the memory of the humboldt broncos crash is an incredibly sensitive subject carrying a lot of trauma to both the survivors, their families, and deceased's families. the trajectory of hockey in canada was changed significantly after this tragedy.

despite this, netflix has decided to make a show using the death of young hockey players for profit. they did not consult the survivors, nor the deceased's families. they stole a canadian story for a feel-good cash grab.

i understand wanting to watch shows about hockey, but this is not the show to watch. do not give it attention, as the humboldt broncos' memories deserve to be theirs and theirs alone to share.

One of the kids on the Broncos lived on my block. A coworker lost her brother in law. This tragedy was widely felt in Canada as a whole - flags at half-mast level.

None of the families even knew about this show until the media started asking how they felt.

It is taking a tragedy and turning it into a cash cow.

This was such a deeply-felt issue that even the truck driver pleaded guilty and has tried to make amends. (And as he is facing deportation after his sentence, some of the families have even started supporting him being allowed to stay in the country.) There is a real story you could be telling about community and resilience that is not just turning one of the worst days for THE NATION into cheap thrills and sensationalism.

Don't watch. Don't tweet. Pretend this show does not exist.

Deadly egg recall

The FDA has upgraded an egg recall issued last month to “Class I,” its highest risk level, as it warns the public that consuming the products could cause “serious adverse health consequences or death.”

The recall of 1,589,577 dozen white-shell eggs and brown cage-free shell eggs was initially issued by Midwest Poultry Services in late July, which warned they might be contaminated with Salmonella Enteritidis.

According to the company, the eggs were produced and distributed from farms in Texas between June 6 and July 3 and have sell-by or best-by dates between July 20 and August 17. The recalled egg cartons have either the code P-1950 or 0840962 and Julian Dates between 157-184.
