The stillness is simply beautiful. Life should just be this easy, calm and peaceful. Alas! It's not. Nevertheless, let's try to be calm despite some messed up circumstances. https://www.instagram.com/p/ChsrNGxBcN5/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=
It won't be easy I know. However, once you can do it, you'll just laugh about every nonsense you can hear. Never stress yourself over things not worthy of your time. #writersofinstagram #writings #jaemel https://www.instagram.com/p/ChrvZM2vEWA/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=
Book Review: A Life Affirming Journey with Morrie
A book review? Yes! I wrote this a year ago for my previous company's staff newsletter. As I was scanning through the files saved in my laptop, I found this and might as well post it here. Maybe there will be someone who can read it.
Reading a book or even just looking at it, for some it means boredom! That perception might change at the end of this book review or it still won’t. But nevertheless, I would love to share bits and pieces of some great books to you. Let me be a storyteller to those who don't have time to turn a page. So in this first book review, join me as I journey back and inject my views about a book that tells a true to life story of an old man who gives life’s most reflective discourses to a young man.
Mitch Albom’s heart-warming book, Tuesdays with Morrie is a story about his favorite college professor Morrie Schwartz whom he visited once a week after seeing him in an interview in a television show after 16 years. The book was first published in 1997. What is Tuesdays with Morrie about? And why at the end of reading this book review you will find yourself in a bookstore or googling an ebook of this book?
Morrie was diagnosed with ALS or amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, Lou Gehrig's disease. It is a progressive neurodegenerative disease that affects nerve cells in the brain and the spinal cord. He is literally on his deathbed as this illness has no cure (not even up to this day). But this book is not about his disease but about how he faces death without a fuss or self-loathing, that although he's sick, dying, and often in pain, he's not afraid of death, but rather interested in getting as much as possible out of the life he has left. Instead of being miserable about his inevitable death, Morrie has accepted it. And even on his last days, he was able to teach his last class with his last student with the most profound subject-----the meaning of life.
Morrie and Mitch met for 14 Tuesdays. They talked about the world, about feeling sorry for yourself, regrets, death, family, emotions, the fear of aging, money, love, marriage, culture, forgiveness, about the perfect day and lastly how they say goodbye. Tuesdays with Morrie is a heartwarming reminder to all of us what is important in life even for people who believe they have everything in life. It teaches us to enjoy each day as it comes and not take anything for granted. Personally, after reading this book years ago, it makes me look at life differently. Even though I personally don’t know Morrie, his wisdom lives in me through this book. I learned to understand and accept that not everything I want in life will be in my hands. And that being grateful of what I have will save me from the misery of chasing those I thought what matters most but not. It made me realized a lot of things. One of which is there’s nothing wrong not to be number one or not being great in everything you do. As what Morrie said, “What’s wrong with being number two?” True to it, there’s really nothing wrong with being number two. We are just so absorbed of being number one to the extent that we are more than willing to jeopardize the rest of what’s important. And that is to value those we have. Tuesdays with Morrie thought me to accept the things I can do and those that I cannot. It changed from chasing excellence into doing the best I can in everything I do. What motivates me now is not to excel but rather to be satisfied with myself because I give it all my best.
Tuesdays with Morrie teaches us how not to dwell on anything but rather embrace it and move on from it, be it bad or good. How miserable would it be to know that you have an incurable disease? Morrie knows that he’s dying and yet it did not stop him from living his remaining days. He was neither scared of it nor ashamed to show to every one of him being weak. If Morrie was able to accept and let go of the scariest thing on earth---death, then why are we people so coward to dwell even on those slightest problems we encounter? This made me ponder and realized not to be controlled of the situation I am in but instead, I should be the one controlling it. It is a fact that we cannot control every circumstance we are in but we can always control how we react to that situation. As for Morrie, he can choose to be stubborn and be a pain in the ass to those surrounding him. His illness is an excused to it and everyone will try to understand him and yet he chose to accept death as an inevitable part of life.
In addition, this book also teaches us about ALS and its overwhelming effects on even the most high-spirited of people and how someone's illness and forthcoming death can affect those closest to the person in both a sad and positive way. If you have ever had to say goodbye to a loved one, you will understand and be a fan of Tuesdays with Morrie. To which I think all of us will eventually say goodbye.
Tuesdays with Morrie is one of the best books I’ve ever read. It is one of the saddest, greatly moving, genuinely touching, life encouraging book. It never failed to make me shed a few tears every time I read it. Whenever I felt lost and exhausted, it always reminds me of how wonderful it is to live and be grateful for every little thing I have. In a world we are in right now, that everything seems to evolve on material things, we might as well acknowledge that life is limited and that we should start living life and stop chasing what the world wants us to have. Morrie wants us to start accepting instead of keep on asking. This book has both a sad but beautiful ending in getting across the message that death is a part of living and shouldn't be feared. This message might be too heavy for some of you but we all have to face up to it eventually. As what Morrie said, “Once you learn how to die, you learn how to live.”
Sharing some of Morrie’s aphorisms that might shade some learnings:
“Accept what you are able to do and what you are not able to do; Accept the past as past without denying it or discarding it; Learn to forgive yourself and to forgive others; Don’t assume that it’s too late to get involved.”
“Life is a series of pulls back and forth. You want to do one thing, but you are bound to do something else. Something hurts you, yet you know it shouldn’t. You take certain things for granted, even when you know you should never take anything for granted.”
“Part of the problem is that everyone is in such a hurry. People haven’t found meaning in their lives, so they’re running all the time looking for it. They think the next car, the next house, the next job. Then they find those things empty, too, and they keep running.”
And my personal favorite: “Don’t let go too soon, don’t hang on too long.”
Gotcha! You’ve read it until the end. And I hope I am able to impart the wisdom I found in this book. ‘Til the next review.

Is it just me or you as well agrees to this? We don't dwell that much whenever instances happened that people start dissecting our every action. However, we tend to really get pissed off on how the criticism is being done. Keep doubting if that's your way of knowing the truth. Let the tears keep flowing if it makes you feel better. Shout! If it can take away your pain. Not a random thought. Should I or should I not? Will it matter anyway? Will my truth ever makes sense? Is it not heartbreaking to mess up with the present good to make things better? Why do I even have to mind and think about it? People often say that being alone is boring. And that you are antisocial and unfriendly. Fine. Respect the opinion. However, have you ever tried to think that being alone means silence which leads to giving yourself time to know yourself more. Afterall, beyond anything else, what we crave is for others to understand and accept us. (Don’t even try to say no! It’s hypocrisy!) And before we let people understand and accept us, we need to understand and accept ourselves first.

Me and the World Out There
October 23 is fast approaching. And as the days come, I can’t fight the urge to look back the past that I’ve been through in my almost three decades of journeying life. And as I see myself in the picture of yesterday, I came to realize that I’ve been through a lot but it seems like those three decades of surviving life is still not that much. There’s still more to it that remains blurry and it’s up to me how to make it clear.
I am a person of so many questions. I can still remember those days when I finally graduated. It was not an easy one. I can still see the Melody who’s struggling to finish her Thesis Study so she can finally graduate. And a Melody who is as well afraid what life she can have after. Where do I start? Where should I find a job? Can I get a job easily? Questions after questions yet remained unanswered.
Truly, life is a series of choices. And what we choose to give life today will determine what life will give us in the future. We are going to be making choices that will determine our success in life in the future. Choices that will mold our future and will help us answer the unanswered questions. Yes! Choices. Lots of it that planning which one to trudge first is confusing. That’s one reason I hate planning. Yes, planning is vital to determine what future you’d like to have, however, for me, I have my own definition of planning what future I should be in tomorrow. Instead of planning something, I give myself a task to always see what I want to see myself and live each day as it comes. And not to stress myself with planning and organizing what I will be in the future. You might ask why? It’s simple. You plan everything, detail after detail but you failed to visualize that not everything you planned will go according to your expectations. And that is a disaster. You’ll get broken. You’ll feel that you are a failure and that you can never measure up with the world out there. And that my friend I don’t want to put myself in. You may think I’m a coward, that I am someone with insecurity issues. I am not! I just have my own way of surviving the realities of life. It doesn’t make me any less smart nor less talented from the others. The way I see and live life doesn’t define my capabilities. It is how I become despite everything defines my existence.
So how do I measure up living in a world of uncertainties? Allow me to share with you a journey that will show you how I keep up without worrying any plans or expectations that might fail. It is still fresh in my mind how I end up leaving the Philippines and see myself walking in the sands of Dubai. When I am still young, the stories of Middle East countries are not enticing at all. It is, in fact, scary. But all of it was replaced with curiosity when I was in a Tourism class during my college days. Our instructor was showing us how Burj Al Arab was built. And it mesmerizes me the hard work and passion that they have in order to create and show the world what the country is capable of. The initial plan after graduation is to relax and distress from all the worries but I saw myself walking in the streets looking for a job. To make the story short, I was able to find a job and end up working in a resort. I am enjoying my job back there but despite that I am looking for something else. I sent application after application and when the time comes that I got in I find excuses not to accept it or there are circumstances which opted me not to go on with it. So I stopped! I told myself what’s meant for me will eventually come in the right time. Indeed it does. A friend of mine asked me to go with her to a job fair. I don’t want at first but I have nothing to lose if I tried. So I came with her with no expectation at all. It’s my first time in a job fair and with all honesty, it is not that appealing to see myself again in a job fair. The place was filled with applicants and the queue was too long just to give your resume and there’s a lot more queues if you want to apply to different agencies. More agencies you submit your resume, more chances of getting an interview. But I only submitted my resume to one agency and luckily I got an interview. That’s what I meant with if it’s meant to be, it will come no matter what. However, I don’t just settle with those meant to be stuff. Not to be self-praising but I am a diligent being. I do my homework pretty well. I always ensure to do the things I need to do before the interview. With luck and perseverance, I got in. I passed the interview for Dubai International Hotel as Spa Receptionist and without further ado, I set foot in Dubai.
The story doesn’t end there yet. The life in DIH is not that all simple. Adjusting is too much to bare at first that sometimes I end up calling my mom. But I was driven by the will to see the good things that I can learn. I am always fuelled by the tasks that I give myself and that is to see myself excel in everything I do. Being a Spa receptionist is not actually an easy job. I can remember myself back then praying and composing myself whenever 0500H or 2300H comes because I will be flooded with First Class guests who doesn’t take no for an answer or those guests who don't know how to wait. I’ve experienced a guest shouting at me or cursed me. Colleagues who will talk behind your back because you’re different from them; I don’t usually go out for the sake of going out. I have my own ways of enjoying life to the fullest to which some doesn’t understand the happiness and fulfillment I feel. There are those non-believers that I can be their perfect supervisor when I was promoted. Of course, I can’t be their best supervisor nor I can level those Supervisors before and I don’t have any plans of doing it so I can turn them to believe in me but one thing is for sure I am not here to show the mediocre Melody or to disappoint those who believes in me. Above everything else, I am here to satisfy and see the best in me ‘coz only from that I can show the world that despite how uncertain it is, I can conquer everything not with the aids of planning the steps but because I trust myself that If I set my mind that I can do it, then indeed I can.
My story DIH story might not be what you expected it to be. But mine is not only a story but a journey to remind me and everyone that if we want to learn or want to be great and excel on something, there’s no room for being afraid to take a leap outside the circle. Keep on moving towards your journey, there’s still a lot to conquer Melody.
