So number one out of all my complaints.
WHY THE FUCK WAS SUKI NOT IN THE DAMN MOVIE????
of the Gaang. There are SIX! Did everyone just forget or what?!
WHY THE HELL WAS IT ONLY 5 of 6 in the GAANG INCLUDED IN THIS STORY!
WHAT were they not interested in a 3 boy, 3, girl team? Plus the eventual bad guy of the story?
IN-UNIVERSE, THIS MEANS AANG DIDNT INVITE HER! And THEN, THE REST OF THE GAANG FOLLOWED SUIT! Not even HER BOYFRIEND, SOKKA.
Overall. I’m disappointed. Not in the casting. I’m fine with that just to be clear. But I think that when they got into arguements they could have had a bit more emotional I guess.
the story? Eh. It’s definitely interesting, but I don’t know. Just eh. And no SUKI in the story makes it worse. I couldn’t get past that.
I feel like they should have just honed in on the emotional aspect of Aang’s survivor’s guilt for himself, and how his friends are trying to help and be supportive.
Katara and Sokka lived through their own genocide, though not the complete and utter massacre of the Air Nomads.
The Southern Water Tribe survived repeated attacks, raids and who knows what because the Fire Nation was kidnapping and murdering every last Waterbender. They’re mother was murdered in their own home. Katara IS the LAST SOUTHERN WATER BENDER. She didn’t know or learn how Southern Waterbenders moved, how they used their abilities until she met Hama! And we don’t know how much she fucked with it to suit bloodbending better. That will never replace a real education in Southern Waterbender technique.
Aang got to learn from his people. She did not.
And Sokka! He was a child too. He was traumatized by all of this too! Just not like Katara. He seen the man that would murdered his mother and went to get help from his dad. And he was too late. They all were too late. They grieved their mother, they knew they were betrayed by someone in their village or someone that traded with it. Then!
Their father and many other able bodied people went off to war. They had to grieve his absence . They had to grow up too quick. Their sister Tribe never even deigned to send reinforcements or aid at any time. The North turned a blind eye to what happened to them.
Toph knows how it feels to live two lives. The one her parents desperately wanted, and her true self. She may have parents, but they were never good parents.
Suki knew the responsibility of protecting her people, she’s the leader of the fucking Kyoshi Warriors! She protects her people from conflict, or at least tries to.
Zuko know the feelings of guilt, shame. He knows failure. He knows what it’s like to be the one that makes decisions for his citizens. Knows where they have lost themselves to violence is fighting tooth and nail to regain peace with the Fire Nation as well as with the rest of the world. He knows what happens when there is no balance in the world, intimately.
I also really disliked how Aang, though a hallucination or maybe actually Spirit Shenanigans, was calmed down by a vision of Gyatso.
it should have been the whole Gaang. Not a Vision. I get the whole betraying your Values. But. Only after he said it out loud.
also don’t like that it seems he forgave Togah at the end so he could die in peace.
and my poor lovely Katara! My number 1 ever. She is a sometimes calm spitfire of a waterbender. Where was that? We see her smarts when she is suspicious of Togah, her eloquence in her speech to Republic City. We sort of see her bending prowess. Then we’re told it’s increased. We see her get fed up with Aang’s quest. But I don’t know. It feels like it’s been put to 10-15% of og show temper. The only time I really see her temper show itself is at the beginning of the spirit world madness when she yells at Sokka.
and Sokka was reduced to a fucking comedic relief. He’s funny in the original yeah, but this just made his brains go bye bye. He was one of the characters who didn’t show it often, but he had heart, in my opinion, like when he talked to Toph about Katara when those two were fighting in season 3
and for Toph, I felt she still had attitude, but she didn’t really have her outspoken blunt/brashness. She had her ‘I’m the best earthbender in the world moment’ against her students. And some newbie airbenders. And that was it. Other than that. She had jokes whether or not Togah was hot or not. And that she claims the corpse of a lion turtle and is calling it Snappy. And she just STANDS THERE WHEN THEYRE GETTING ATTACKED AND BREACHED IN ZUKO’S SHIP?! WHAT HAPPENED TO THE SERIES FINALE TOPH THAT SEIZED AN AIRSHIP BRIDGE AND MADE A METAL SUIT FOR HERSELF? WHY DOES SHE ONLY MOVE WHEN ZUKO TELLS HER TO?!
for Suki. OH WAIT. THERE WSS NO SUKI! She was basically only in one or two frames. Voiceless. In the epilogue of the movie before the credits. Why was she in a random street in Republic City with some of the Kyoshi Warriors for no reason. Was she in Republic City this WHOLE TIME?!
and Finally it’s Zuko here. He’s my favorite male character (Katara is my #1 always. *cough cough cough Zutara my love cough cough*
and there is almost nothing I can say about him. He’s got flawed logic? I just. What. In the of he an awkward turtleduck. And stressed. A bit stern maybe. His hotheadedness did get tempered near the end. He was smart. He finally valued himself. And this movie makes him feel…flat. It feels like he didn’t have Mitch lines. Like I feel like the Zuko from the og show was a mix between expressive and…reserved/collected. And akward turtle duck. I don’t know what to say about the writing of this Zuko. I just. Ehhhhhhhhh. He got fan serviced? His shirt got ripped off?
and also! Once the ocean Spirit was called I was so out of the movie. I just didn’t like it. Eh.
