It’s okay that he’s dead.
It is - it really, really is.
It’s just - it’s not okay that there was no closure.
It’s not okay that the whole thing was presented this way.
Thing is, he didn’t have to die, y’know? I’m happy that Rukia is a Captain now. That’s well-deserved, and that makes sense, and that’s very, very good - but he didn’t have to die for that to have happened. He could retired permanently to Ugendō, or he could have taken up a non-combat, advisory position at the First, or he could have opened a teahouse in the Seireitei - anything, really, as long as the way was clear for Rukia to wear that haori.
And we didn’t even get to see the man’s face again.
No parting words. No last, little smile. No reassurance to the Captain-Commander that everything will be all right - nothing.
And I know he’s a secondary character, and I know I’m biased because he’s my favorite, and I know that we can’t expect Kubo to treat all of his beautiful, beautiful creations with the same exact amount of respect and panel time, but… this…
This wasn’t quite the way to do it.
It came close. It wasn’t going to be easy, no matter what. And the moment we did get with Kyouraku was nice enough. (But I sort of think that moment was about Kyouraku. Not about - about - his friend.) But I wish we’d gotten something more.
I wish that I felt sad, but satisfied.
As it is, I… just feel sad.
Rest in the greatest and most extraordinary peace possible, Juu-chan. Breathe easy, for the first time in two thousand years. Watch over those you love, and those who love you.
