Rukia’s taste was pretty basic; it was far more difficult to find something she disliked than it was to find something she liked. Being picky wasn’t something you could afford on the streets of Inuzuri after all. “It’s good! It has a unique personal touch to it. I like it.” She declared, offering her notes as she mulled the aftertaste.
Nonetheless, onigiri had their own memories for her too. Particularly they were of her times’ training in the mountains, the way Kaien would talk with his mouth open with such passion, and all while still managing to catch a grain upon his cheek; the thought was enough cause her smile quietly at the recollection while her gaze remained on the rest of the remaining morsel.
Shakes her head about, pulling herself out of her head; these moments of reflection kept surfacing and just as before, she’d keep shoving them back. Rather than being in her own head, she needed to be focused on the people before her, the ones who needed her most right now. “Wait– you grow them? You’ve never mentioned that before?” She felt like she should have at least had a hint of that in her memory.
Amongst her feeling bad that she hadn’t known such details, an idea springs to mind, causing Rukia to slam her palm down on the desk, making a smack on the wood louder than she intends, sending a ripple amongst the liquid of the tea, but she still eagerly declares whilst sitting up in her seat, “Oh! We should make a community garden for the squad!! Wouldn’t that be fun?!”
A gradual warmth swept through him as Rukia’s approval and complimentary notes on the onigiri rang through his ears. It was nice to share such moments with friends. With Ukitake now gone, and Kiyone having moved to the 4th division as lieutenant it seemed as though true friends were becoming sparse. Still, he didn’t blame Kiyone for leaving...to stay here in these barracks would serve to be a nearly unbearable reminder of what was. Even so, it was their duty to rebuild what once was. In time it would get better and they would become stronger, growing together to reach their best. Who better to lead them to such heights than Rukia herself? She had grown so much since first joining the 13th. To see her now after she’d overcome so much, well, Sentaro was proud to call her Captain. Her surprise at the mention of him growing the plums himself caught him a bit off guard. Had he never shared that with her before? Surely he’d mentioned it at some point, or perhaps that was spoken to another? Regardless of if he had or hadn’t, it only mattered that he’d shared it now.
“Oh yes! We used to grow them back home, my mother and I. We would wait all year for them! Picking them only when they were at their peak. My mother was very good at predicting when the perfect moment was.” He beamed as he engulfed the other half of his own lunch. The sudden slam on the wood caused him to nearly choke on his own food. Darting his eyes across the desk he was delighted to see such ambition in the captain. A community garden? So cool! Gulping down the remainder of his lunch he grinned in approval. “Haha! A wonderful idea, Taichou!” He chuckled. “Surely the other members would love to partake in such an event! We could grow all kinds of things! Flowers, fruits, vegetables, anything we want!”
