⌠ DREW RAY TANNER, 24, CISMALE, HE/HIM ⌡ welcome back to gallagher academy, ASHLAN NOTLEY! according to their records, they’re a SECOND year, specializing in DRIVER’S ED + SEDUCTION AND FLIRTATION; and they DID NOT go to a spy prep high school. when i see them walking around in the halls, i usually see a flash of (pristine balenciaga sneakers, an over-sized historical biography & wintergreen tic tacs). when it’s the (aquarius)’s birthday on 2/14/1996, they always request their HONEY GARLIC PORK CHOPS from the school’s chefs. looks like they’re well on their way to graduation.

his mother was a spy (a gallagher girl ofc) who married a Civilian and she retired when she got pregnant with ashlan

he’s an only child so his mother never told him about her life as a spy bc she was anti blackthorne (bc she’s smart<3) and she didn’t think he should go to gallagher and she thinks going to school for it before diving in is very important!!!

ashlan’s parents divorced when he was in hs so his mother moved to new york city and he and his father stayed in melbourne. he ended up going to university in aus and studied history

he’s a huge history nerd but i am not so let’s just have fun!

one day his mother was like...............you should try to transferring to columbia because what if........you get in and she was bein weird about it but he was like okay lol and he got in because he’s smart (allegedly) and his grades were good but mostly because he knows a few languages and was in 8237846 clubs and is also athletic so they were like?? a one of a kind genius also his mom had gallagher ties to columbia because that sounds........believable......

then ofc gallagher opened up to boys and his mom was like. btw i Actually was a spy, not a microbiologist forever like u thot and you should go train to be a spy and he was like o word? because he likes trying new things clearly (even though highkey history is his one true Passion)

"i say that as if you don’t live with other people now.” if he has to spell it out, then fine! “are you a noisy roommate? you can be honest.” ashlan might seem like it, but he’s not, despite growing up an only child who didn’t really have to worry about being considerate of shared spaces in that way. “well...i purposely hadn’t asked.” because if he said aussie it’d be pandering and if he didn’t it’d be insulting! “then i do feel obligated to ask why you took the class? there’s plenty of other gen ed credits you might like more.”

“I know you’re extremely disappointed about the matter,” she teased back, laughing softly as she shook her head at him in amusement. He was a little ridiculous, but not enough that it made Aileen want to turn up her nose at him. She rolled her eyes in slight exasperation. “Don’t judge me,” she said around the cookie still in her mouth. She swallowed and waited a beat before taking another bite of her second biscuit. “They’re just so good. I can’t help myself.” 

“Nah...better late than never.” Which was a philosophy he agreed with, because thinking you’re too late if not a reason not to be happy about or to do something. But he also likes why put off to tomorrow what you can do today? “I’m not judging! I’m...impressed? You have taste, so if anything, I’m proud.”

Faith usually didn’t make much of the things people said about her name, however this one at least earned a pleased nod from her. “I sort of like the sound of that. Truth be told, I love bossing people around,” she pointed out proudly, a small grin curving up her lips. “It is,” she responded vaguely, definitely going to make him work for it if he was so desperate to know it. “No I knew it was going to happen .. just not this fast. – A lot worse and you’d probably have to do it a couple of times.”

“Do they have a specialization for that here?” It was a half-joke, but the closest thing would be covert ops, because then you could come back to Gallagher and boss around students as a teacher. “Okay, uh...Faith Angel Rush?” It was too perfect an opportunity for a half-baked pick-up line to pass it up. “I hope lip tats cost less, then, right? Or do they cost more because they’re harder to do?” And more unpleasant for the artist, too.

“Right,” Cole responds, his brow creased with a smile that says he definitely doesn’t believe him. “I appreciate you sticking by me anyway. How was the gala for you? I have to say, I did miss seeing you behind the bar.”

“Any time, mate. Ride or dies, right?” On his end at least. For no reason in particular, either. “It was pretty cool! I did end up figuring out my person. Did you have any luck?” Between event related activities, he’d enjoyed DJing more, but bartending was a close second. “I’ve been considering joining the PPC just to be in charge of the drink selection.”

“have you ever been to france? they all dress like it’s a night at the opera every day.” same with italy. and he likes that vibe, sometimes, but he’d prefer something more chill for his day-to-day life. the uniform aspect of gallagher is barely tolerable. “what, you can’t feel them?” he shakes his arms out for emphasis. “what about now?” and he makes a super focused face.

he glances around the room, gaze eventually landing on what ( he assumes ) must be what he means. “oh, that’s what that is?” van’s shoes usually ended up either under his bed or under his desk. or jacque’s aforementioned stash of stolen goods. “yep. i’m pretty sure that’s where the name came from, actually. latin for thief. or something like that.”

“yeah, you can tell by the shoes.” and he says it to be helpful, not to be a smart ass! ashlan isn’t even a super neat person by nature but he puts extra effort in when there’s roommates involved, even if it’s all dudes. “so then...why does it mean both?” etymological history is actually something he’s not an expert on.

Aileen’s head was pulled up from her book at the sound of Ashlan’s voice, only followed by a wide grin that always arrived when he did. “Oh?” she replied, raising an eyebrow and pulling the snacks closer, her eyes lighting up. “Oh my gosh!” Her smile on widened. “Suddenly, you’re my favorite person in the world.” She couldn’t help herself as she ripped open the package and took two of the cookies out, popping one into her mouth before she offered them to Ashlan, wiggling the package a little to get him to take one. 

"That’s a recent development?” He asked with false disappointment. The only person he expected to consider her their favorite was Juno! (Which he wasn’t.) Ashlan didn’t offer snacks to people on a near constant basis for the appreciation; it was partially because he knew Aussie snacks were superior and partially because he liked giving people something new, that they’d enjoy. “Damn, MacNee, one bite?!” That’s the kind of thing Ashlan could only do with the help of some milk. “Thank you for sharing. I didn’t even have to ask.” But of course he’d take one.

"don’t you want to make an impression in order to have those connections for the future? you never know where a classmate is going to end up -- or a former instructor, for that matter.” they’re all connected as hell already and ashlan wouldn’t mind having one of his instructors admire his work. “that you know of,” he points out. you can’t see radioactivity, after all. it’s not all glowing space rocks like in comic books. “it’s a good sign when the toxicity is actually marked.” most of it is, probably, this is really not an area of expertise for him. “yeah, but why would you sacrifice your eyesight for an aesthetic? you can also really read it with the lights on.”

“I wouldn’t call it ’ cool ’ but you’re also not the one who has to deal with the puns,” she responded, a quiet sigh following shortly after as she ran her fingers through her hair for a moment. “I shouldn’t tell you about my second name then,” she added, already a bit used to making fun of herself for it. “I don’t get why people would get a tattoo expecting it to fade but technically, yeah. I don’t what to imagine what it feels like to laser your lip though.”

"It’s easy to remember, which I think is kind of cool. ‘Miss Rush’ sounds like you should be surrounded by harried interns at a fancy office, like a Miranda Priestly type.” Mr. Notley doesn’t have the same ring at all, so he probably shouldn’t become a history professor after all this. “Is it another noun?!” Her parents capitalized big time on the Rush surname, if so. “So you thought it wasn’t going to? Like getting the tattoo again, but...worse.”

“my bad, i’m used to being around my hearing impaired sister.” a joke, perhaps an attempt to make him slightly uncomfortable if only to amuse nate. “what would you deem as a fun accent?” he’s pretty sure he can’t imitate accents, not even in his head. “got it. well, it doesn’t interest me much but i can at least see its importance so here i am, unfortunately.”

"what, you share a dorm?” they obviously don’t so yes he’s only asking to be an ass. “just any accent that’s different from the one you have?” americans seem to think australian accents are funny but he doesn’t agree, of course. “how can history not interest you?! especially spy history. just reading about espionage during wwii is fascinating, i could read like fifty books about that alone.”

“not around each other. we all know what we do.” gallagher students are competitive, but it’s nothing ashlan isn’t used to. columbia was probably worse, because their reputation is known worldwide and gallagher’s is known to very few. “yeah, but some things are obviously worse. radioactive energy doesn’t give you superpowers in real life.” not that he’s tried personally, though he would have totally taken the opportunity as a child. “you know, they are actually still glasses whether you’re looking at a screen or not. since it seems to be the aesthetic you’re after.”

“don’t they teach us that there’s more to using a gun than just pointing and shooting?” not so much with paintball guns, admittedly, but having good aim is a skill. even with laser tag! “you can still do that with a gun,” he points out good-naturedly. are they even allowed to use hand to hand for this thing? ashlan picks one at random and shoots the ground. “damn. green.”

Tilting her head a bit at his question. “ .. a 45 ? I’ll probably have to touch it up again. ”

"the cool thing about your name is it’s a noun and a verb -- or two nouns, depending on the context.” she knows this already, but it’s just funny, to think that anyone (who speaks english) could misspell her name of all things. “that’s a very specific number, thank you. and not as bad as i was expecting, actually. so if you regret it ever, does it just go away for free and you don’t have to pay for laser?”

“you look, and smell, pretty damn good for a hobo, though.” is that term acceptable in the year 2020? not really and yet everyone still uses it. “the worst? i’m hoping that’s because there hasn’t been a lot of competition.” but when it comes to gallagher students, many of them have had an array of terrible days. “i can definitely help with the vibes part.”

“are you concerned with standing out?” ashlan isn’t, really, even though he sort of has showy specializations. they’re also the kind you can’t show off unless it’s under the right circumstances (though he’s of the belief that there’s no wrong time to practice one’s flirtation skills). “if bacon is really a carcinogen, then i guess so.” but isn’t everything? some things are just worse than others. “you know, you can actually wear glasses without blinding yourself. they make them for blue light protection now.”
