With the 36 days of type now in full swing I thought I’d share one of my favourite creatives contributions to the event. Letterpress bakery is an amazing bakery located in Vancouver. I’ve been following their page for a while because I love their crazy and intricate cake decorating designs and they inspire my own cake decorating adventures. Now they inspire my design practices as well! It amazes me that anything can be used to create designs. Check out their page if you want to see more of their stunning creations!

In week 8

In this week, I found lots of letterforms on the campus. I found them in cracks of asphalt concrete, objects, and even in the landscape of buildings. It was an interesting workshop to found letterforms in my daily life. It was easy to find them around me, even in nature, I could found letterforms.

Reflection

13 weeks passed, I had a very enjoyable time during this course and it has enlarged my knowledge of design.

During the lectures and tutorials, I have learned and discovered a lot. The lectures showed me a lot of knowledge of type and design history, also provides me with an idea of design future. The 12-week tutorials were provided so many activities for me to learn skills and to challenge my thinking perspectives. Change my thinking about design through creating our fonts from different angles. (btw teamwork was the best. In addition, I even have the opportunity to make a zine that I have never thought of before, have the opportunity to communicate with designers/artists through interviews. It was an incredible journey.

Initially, my personal objectives were to be creative (to think differently) and to challenge my personal abilities as much as I can. Eventually, I am aware that the possibilities of design. I learned that the main goal of design is on creation, therefore, I don't have to use or follow the ideas that already existed, I can be bolder to innovate, to create. I can create not only my own fonts, even can be anything. This course taught me a lot and I want to thank Andy and Karen for all the efforts.

Week 13

Look how many zine I have printed out to test and check my design....

During these two weeks, I kept printing out my zine in hardcopy in order to test and refine. I used school printer to print my trials copies. I printed in A6 firstly a few times to make sure the composition was correct, then I printed in my final size A5 to further adjust the design. Sadly, I always find some small errors in my zine and I have to go back to refine again and again...tired...

However!!! These are my final final zine!!!! After so many refinements, I finally made my three final final copies in very refined design (I think it is very refined) and printed in officeworks in good quality papers. I also add a sleeve of cover to make it look more official. I can’t wait to show my zine in the exhibition!!!

A little, short rationale/reflection-

The creative I interview is an artist I’ve been following for a while on weibo, and it was like a dream that she says yes to my interview requirement. So I have taken this zine project very serious and always trying to do the best I can while I was designing and making it. I think I really did pushed myself in this project,

Because my creative, Moonmeer, is an illustration, so my zine is mainly focused on her illustrations, trying to display how beautiful those illustrations are. I admire her work as well as her ability of painting as she is not professionally educated in any art or design, so I think she is incredibly talented in this area. The colour she used in all her works was so balanced and aesthetics that I am trying to imitate it while I was designing.

All the image I used in my zine have authorised by the creative. She was really kind to provide all the works she satisfied the most from her. During the process, I had so much fun when I played around with the design composition and making my own zine. I really appreciate Andy and Karen to have this project to give me a challenge to try to contact an artist that I admire and I really want to thank my creative to provide this opportunity to me to interview her and make this come true. It was a really awesome project and I was enjoying it.

Zumbtobel Annual Report by Sagmeister & Walsh

Zumtobel is a manufacturer of lighting systems and components, based in Dornbirn, Austria. The 2017/18 annual report was inspired by light and shadow. The visual language mixes gradients, typographic play and color. The edition comes in two forms: standard and limited. Annual reports are arrayed with 20 prints featuring phrases.

Week 11

In this week’s tutorial, we were taught how to create ours own zine and had a chance to ask some problems I had while making zine.

Before this tutorial, I have printed a few sample zines in A6 size for a few times after every time I changed my design composition. There were some small mistakes of the pages that I need to improve and change. However, one big mistake is the pages are completely wrong. Therefore, I talked to the teacher during the tutorial and found out it is because the printer setting needs to be ‘short edge’. I finally fixed the problem.

Moreover, the lecturer pointed out some of my grammar errors and I fixed it immediately. I will need to further check my grammar as my next refining step.

Here are some progress I had.

The first one is in A6 small size to test. In this trial, I found the page numbers are wrong and some small mistakes such as unexpected white edges, smudge black dots, etc. Maybe is because A6 is too small, I cannot really read the texts and see the details. I did some adjustments after I printed the trial A6 size. I also changed some compositions. Then, The second and after are all in A5, which is the same as my final size. Still has some unexpected white edges existed. I still need to fix it. The English text is too small to read, as well as some Chinese text in some pages is hard to read because of the background. I need to change it and keep refining my zine.

Week 10

In today’s tutorial, we were taught how to use Adobe Indesign for layout and composition in order to make ours own zine. I learned a lot of useful tips during the class and it was really helpful to learn. Although I found it was very difficult to learn a new software that I was not able to follow the tutorial very well, once I got familiar with it with others’ help, it is much easier and convenient than I thought.

We were also learned how to make our own zine during the class and tried to create my first zine as soon as possible. Because I’m quite new to the software, it takes a while to make it, but wow!!! I can’t believe I made my first little A5 zine ever!!! It is simple and easy one to make but still think it is the cutest haha!!! I also learned how to use those tools to trim and staple. I love this tutorial!!!

For the progress of my own zine.

I was doing the composition and translation at the same time and I finally finished all the translation of my creative’s interview as well as finished some basic design of my zine. My final zine will be 16 pages. Since we learned to make zine in today’s tutorial, I decided to print it out in A6 size to see whether the composition works and how those pages look like in real life. I found that there were some small errors around the edges that it leaved some white area and some pages’ images were not match well. Maybe it is because the size I made was too small. I have to adjust this later.

Because I went to magazine and zine shop yesterday, I have improved some of my composition to make it look more interesting to read. However I gave the trial version to my friends and family to let them read, they pointed out some of the problems

Before I’m going to make my final zine, I still need to improve the composition and I need to check the grammar as well. I also need to make sure what kind of sizes and paper I’m going to use through playing around with it. So I still got a bit of work to do.

Today, I went to a magazine shop called ‘mag nation’ and zine shop under the flinders street station when I was free because I wanted to explore how the magazines layout and composition and I wanted to learn how others make their zine.

I went to ‘mag nation’ shop to learn how those designers arrange their text and image as well as the composition. I found that the image would be the most dominant in a page in the most of designs that occupied almost two pages. And some designs have combined the image with the text which is kind of interesting to attract audience. There are pages that contains more than one image would tend to have similar visual weight to the text to make it look kind of unity.

I found two methods of making zine was quite interesting. One is sewing and other is using a cover for covering up the staple, which make the zine looks nicer and tidy. There were so many sizes of zine that I can create and some zines were in square which was different from others.

Week 9

In this week tutorial, we were doing the letters in collage. We found ours pieces from magazines and arranged it freely to create our own letterforms. I had collected so many photocopies to do it haha.

These were some of the letters that I created. I think these are interesting and fun. I did whatever I want to these letters. It was super free and no constraints at all.

In the class, we were able to step out from digital methods and materials to learn how to create letters by using these traditional materials and methods. It was nice to see how many differences between digital and traditional.

We also learned how to make a zine during our class and I cannot wait to make my own zine.

(I have received my creative’s response in Chinese, I’m currently doing the translation. However, I wish to keep the original language in my zine, so I think the zine will be in bilingual eventually.

Week 8

In this week tutorial, we were required to find letters and numbers that existed in our school campus (and also had a walk while finding haha

In order to find letters and numbers, I try to use different perspective to search, such as looking up, looking upside down or twist my neck....

Some letters/numbers were already existed and some were formed by angles (the ‘Z’ ‘Q’ and ‘M’ were created by the angle) and some of them were just appeared for one second (the ‘5’ from sky and the ‘2’ created by the shadow ) and I was luck to capture that.

This activity provides us a brand new perspective of looking our familiar environment and knowing that there are so many interesting ‘natural letters’ that exist in our life.

I tried to reach one of my favourite creative that I follow on weibo by texting him on weibo directly, and still waiting for his reply. I followed this artist since I was in year 7. I think his works are super creative that I cannot believe he has so many fantastic unbelievable ideas in his mind which inspired me a lot. I wish I can interview him and ask him about how can he comes out these many ideas.

Since I’m not confident about the previous artist that he would reply me or not, I tried to reach for another artist whose also on my list. I contacted the illustrator called ‘Moonmeer’ that I like and follow on weibo, which also inspire me a lot.

I can’t believe got reply from her, which I’m super excited now!!!!!! I cannot wait to interview her.

(Update: I got the interview back from my creative and I’m currently working on the translation of the interview as she was written in Chinese. However, for my final, I want to keep the original text as well in my zine.

Week 7

Since we don’t have class on Friday as we normally do, I attended my friends Tuesday’s class and we did a small exhibition of ours first assessment works.

We were separated in different to do the display, every group were so creative. But to be honest, I think my group was the craziest group because we exhibited ours work on a 4000 dollars print machine (that’s expensive haha) and we were so close to get in trouble...

It was nice to see other works and seeing how we all think and create differently.

Week 6

In this week tutorial, we were required to create our own typeface in our group. Our group got the shape of triangles and few rectangles for some helps maybe. And Yay! Group work again!!! I love working with others and I think it was the most interesting session so far!!!

We all worked together very well and came out this creative and fun typeface together! During the session, we had considered about creating the letters in the most straightforward way as well as using negative spaces, etc. We tried to keep the typeface in the similar sizes because it’s more comfortable to read and we also tried different arrangements as well in order to make sure everything was perfect.

The typeface had been improved and refined for few times to make sure we can communicate our letters in the most effective way as the above pictures show, for example, the ‘Y’ had changed for few times to reach ours best expectation. We definitely got help with the orange pieces as it made the typeface looks more unique and interesting. During the process of refining our typeface, we used to have the rectangular shape for ‘A’, ‘N’ and ‘P’, but we ended up getting rid of any rectangles to keep our typeface in triangular shape.

Shape shift

We were recommended by our teachers to have the name of ‘shape shifter’ as the typeface name. We ‘writed’ it in our typeface with extra pieces and simplified the words became ‘shape shift’ after we discussed. It ended up looking nice and fun, I like it!

I will definitely consider to use this kind of typeface in my future design, however, maybe try to make it more readable as some letters may took time to understand.

Making progress for my question

Pt.2

I had an actual plan for this time! I rethinked my mistake and reflected, I decided to make a plan by listing what I’m going to use and how will I arranged my sentence with what materials.

To have the best result, I brought a bunch of flowers in IGA for $12. Just want to use a little of them as my plan shows, just three or four maybe...

Arrange the question as my plan, it is much easier to show my question with a plan!

Did not waste my previous materials, I collected all the materials and I used before because some might useful for this time, obviously it’s helpful. To make the sentence more obvious, I changed a background to concrete.

Result! The first pic forgot to include the question mark, so I add one and photograph again. I think this version of my question has much improved. I’m really satisfied with this result. I try to photoshoot it in different angles and lightings to find the best way to convey my question. I can read the question easily this time. Just to make sure it can clearly deliver my question, I also ask my friends to read the question.

PS. Not wasting flowers!

Making progress for the question...

My question is ‘why design needs to aesthetic?’

So... I had a plan of how it arranged the letters and the layout of the question on my mind, and I just did it without hesitation.

I have many ideas of the use of materials for the question, such as using line contrasting with the background to emphasise the text, using flowers as it represents aesthetics, using accessories/jewellery which may also represents aesthetics, or maybe beauty tools.

In the end, I decided to go with the idea of emphasising the word ‘aesthetic’ by using flowers, branches, something aesthetics from the nature. So I collected a lot of materials by walking around the area I live and some of them are from my backyard. I was thinking to place the question on a green grass... but it’s hard to find a grass is still green now since it’s fall, most of the grasses become yellow... so the result didn’t turn as good as I expected, not only because of the background, but also it’s hard to read the question even though edited after photoshop.

Reflecting:

I personally really like the idea of using flowers because I think it is effective to convey ‘aesthetic’. I might need to rethink how to show the question more obvious and more effective. Maybe change a background or photoshooting in studio, but I actually perfer show it in nature.
