chapter ten: the promotion

Petunia has always held fast to the belief that soft mattresses lead to bad posture, and that bad posture is the gateway to moral decay. She’d preached this particular philosophy over countless Sunday dinners, her fork perfectly poised as she articulated how a sagging spine inevitably leads to a sagging ethical framework, all while casting pointed looks at Lily, who has always preferred to be as cozy as possible. It is one of Petunia’s many rigid guiding principles, right up there with the proper way to fold towels and the absolute necessity of polishing silver every fortnight, regardless of use.

So when Lily wakes up on the firmest mattress the Midlands has to offer, it doesn’t take long for her to remember that she hadn’t fallen asleep in her own bedroom last night, but Petunia’s.

In just under an hour, they’ll be at Petunia’s engagement party, where James will be expected to step into the role of Lily’s boyfriend. It isn’t a wholly unfamiliar act — their entire friendship began with him playing a similar part, after all — but that feels like something from another lifetime, back when the stakes were lighter and the lines more familiar.

This time, James doesn’t know the script. Hand-holding? Pet names? An arm around her waist? A quick kiss on the cheek if some doting aunt coos over them? Where, exactly, is the line between convincing and inappropriate?

And worse — how much of his own longing can he safely bury beneath the facade of performance before it starts to show through the cracks?

What is the origin of your blog name?

A reference, obviously, to the brand of firewhiskey mentioned in canon HP. I had a little inside joke with myself that all of my characters in the first few fics I ever wrote were all, for some reason, drinking firewhiskey, so it seemed appropriate.

What’s your “I will always order this” food?

This is possibly very boring, but chicken parmesan. I live in a part of the US where there are a LOT of Italian-Americans (myself included), and some good chicken parm always slaps.

What’s your overused emoji?

Crying face. Red Heart. Skull. Appropriate for any occasion -- earnest, or ironic.

What’s your current comfort show/movie/book?

My husband and I have been rewatching the LoTR this week, which is always a standby.

Otherwise, some frequently rewatched shows of mine: Gilmore Girls, Grey's Anatomy, Outlander (S1&2 specifically), Arrested Development.

Song you’ve had on repeat this week?

What’s the last thing you hyperfixated on?

Oh god this is embarrassing. My husband and I got super absorbed in the Karen Read trial and re-trial (iykyk).

What’s an oddly specific thing that brings you joy?

My dog is a mutt of all sorts (looks a bit like a big black chihuahua, or a smallish black lab?). He has a curly-Q tail that's usually held upright, jauntily in a little curl. But sometimes when he's relaxed or nervous, his tail goes totally limp and hangs down like the tail of a lab or a golden retriever.

I know this is probably not how it works, but I like to imagine that the existence of Straight!tail implies that Curly!tail is an active choice he makes when he's happy <3

What smell instantly makes you happy?

The smell of fresh-out-of-the-oven chocolate chip cookies, particularly around this time of year. My mom loves to bake and bakes dozens of assorted cookies for Christmas. So, growing up, from November onward, my house smelled like cookies ALL THE TIME. Y'know that scene in Ratatouille when the critic tastes Remy's ratatouille and it immediately transports him back in time to his grandmother's' house? That's me, only the smell of cookies transports me straight to my mom's kitchen in like, 2004.

What’s something you loved as a kid that you secretly love now?

Coming out as fan of the reality TV show, Survivor. I have been watching that show since season 2 when I was like... 7? Just wrapped up season 49. And when I say I am a fan, I must emphasize that I am not a fan in a casual way, either. I am active on the subreddit, I listen to the podcasts, I could probably name all of the winners and seasons in order if pressed. It's vaguely embarrassing but also, like, the world is burning and I gotta get my joy somewhere?

NGL i have toyed on more than one occasion with writing a hinny Survivor fic but idk if those two fandoms overlap AT ALL. Intended audience: me.

What’s your phone wallpaper right now?

LOL it is a very melodramatic flowery background with the words "I hate it here" flowing across on a scroll. CAN U TELL I'M AMERICAN YET? HAVE I MADE IT OBVIOUS ENOUGH?

Are you a morning person, night owl, or something else entirely?

Ooh such a night owl. I could more easily stay awake until 5am than wake up at that time. But alas -- born to be a night owl, forced by society to function at 7am.

Lastly, if you work, what is your work profession? And do you like it?

I work in higher education! I'm an administrator in an academic department at a university. I like it okay - it's not my dream job or anything, but it's not overly stressful and I get good benefits. I was on a very different path before I realized that I really value work-life balance and sought out a job that would give me that.
