William inwardly cringed and quickly shook his head. “Oh, no. No no no. You don’t have to do that. Don’t do that.” Sure, he wanted to be friends with Edward, and now Ashton as well. But he didn’t want someone to pressure him into it. “Lets just see what happens, okay? Organically?” William pressed his lips together and let out a breath through his nose. “Weren’t you going on a run?”

Ashton frowned some more, but then agreed. “Okay fine. I will not say anything! But you are missing out on some great food. I really will have to leave leftovers on your porch.” He looked behind him at the sunset for a second. “Yeah, I totally forgot! Look the sunset is already over too. I lost track of time haha.”

“I wasn’t aware that small town living came with so many rules,” William hummed, shoving his hands in his pockets so they weren’t fidgeting so obviously out in the open. “It’s really nice of you to invite me over,” he smiled. “But I’d hate to show up unbeknownst to the host, y’know. Sky caught her balance rather easily and looked up at the stranger. “No, no, you’re fine,” she smiled as she tucked some hair behind her ear. “No damage done!” Nodding at the boy’s words, she pursed her lips slightly. “Yeah, I was totally going for a run myself.” Sky let those words hang in the air for a bit, before shaking her head. “That’s a complete lie. I was walking to get ice cream. But I appreciate all the energy you have.”

William’s eyes moved to where Ashton pointed and his eyes widened. Of course he was talking about Edward. It was only fitting that the two nicest boys he’d met so far were each other’s best friend. “Oh,” he nodded and then tried to add casually, “I’ve met Edward. I mean, we met earlier in the week. I live on the other side of him, actually. So.. guess we’re neighbors.” William smiled at the boy’s blunt optimism. Usually it was off-putting, but it was refreshing at the moment. “I hope so, too.”

He was a bit sad he couldn’t extend an invitation then for dinner as he was still unsure about their new foster parents and he wasn’t sure he wanted anyone over anyway. But Ashton’s smile was so infectious, the regret didn’t last long. “That is an admirable bucket list. I’ve got to know– who has the best cooking in Astoria?” he asked. “I don’t know, it doesn’t seem too bad, yet. Ask me in a week.”
