You got me at the right time! Good question.

This was meant for someone else’s au, but with a lot of my stuff I generally leave it up to audience interpretation. So I will provide my thoughts but everyone is free to come up with their own thing.

In this au Lapis takes over Ghost’s place. Unlike phantom quartz, Lapis Lazuli can’t ...really, well, encapsulate an entire other gem inside of it. There is, of course, the other mineral that comes with our canon Lapis, as with most of the irl gems.

Which is Pyrite, otherwise known as Fool’s Gold.

So, what if the Pyrite concentration in Lapis was enough to warrant its consciousness? After all, Ghost considered Cairngorm their “other self”. So Pyrite is an extension of Lapis and thus shares their inclusions. Of course, like Cairn, they are still able to think independently, somewhat.

I don’t think they will ever be able to take a form of their own unless they’re forcibly extracted from Lapis and reconstructed, so maybe we’ll never know.
