Pairing: Augustus Waters and Evelyn Rose Lancaster-Waters
Prompt: What it would be like for Augustus and Evelyn at the playground.

From there, Augustus would set the basket down and crouch down to undo velcro sandals that strapped around ankles, and set them off to his side. He’d press a kiss to two tiny little hands, and usher her off to play while he set up their little space under an old willow tree. He’d spread out the picnic blanket, setting Evelyn’s shoes on there along with his own, before going to join her in the sand. Whistling a tune, he’d force his way through the sand even though it really didn’t agree with his metal leg.
“Daddy!” Evelyn would run up to the young man, and Augustus would smile warmly, allowing her to pull him towards the swing set. “Push me?” she’d look up with green eyes that dear God looked like her mother’s. In fact, Evelyn looked a lot like Hazel Grace, with the dark brown hair that was too dark to have been inherited from himself.
“Of course, love,” He’d croon, picking her up and setting her into the seat of the swing, before managing to get behind her, starting to push her cautiously. Every time he did this, he’d think of Hazel Grace’s old swing set, and how he should get one for Evelyn so that in the future, she could look back at the memories.
“Higher!” the little girl squealed, and Augustus was always more than willing to comply. Though she was almost four, Evelyn was incredibly smart for her age (though, who would have expected any less, considering who her parents were). Augustus was very into her education; having gotten the Little Einstein education kits, Hooked On Phoenix, and plenty of other little systems that are supposed to “enhance your child’s IQ before they turn five.”
After about an hour of being at the park, that was when the women would swarm. A good looking man in his early twenties? It was pure gold for them. He’d be resting under the tree, arms back with plaid sleeves pushed up to his elbow. Legs stretched out, no one could really resist. And Augustus was never rude; his mother would have kittens. So he’d smile and nod along to the forty year old women, as they’d chatter on and sit themselves down on his blanket.
“So you said you were single?"
“Yes, that’s right,” he’d smile tightly.
“What a shame. Did the mother run out on you? What bitch leaves their kid with their father and takes off? Irresponsible, I tell you--”
“Actually, her mother died. Cancer.” That’d usually get them to shut up, and Augustus would sit up, running a hand through his hair.
“I am so sorry, love. I couldn’t even imagine--Loosing someone so young... Would you like to come and join me and my son for lunch? We have plenty, I promise--”
And because it was rude to decline, he’d wander over to their blanket, and struggle with sitting down, still making casual talk.
Everyone couple trips or so, Evelyn would wind up in a fight. A boy would push her down on the playground, and she’d get up, hands and knees covered with sand and a few scrapes, and stick her tongue out at him.
Augustus would excuse himself from the rapidly declining conversation, and wander over to her, where she would look up at him with tears in her eyes. “What’s wrong, Princess?” he’s ask softly, leaning down to touch her cheek.
“He pushed me down,” she frowned. Augustus would take her hands and wipe off the sand, kissing the scratch marks left. “Cause he said that you were weird ‘cause you only have one leg.” She let out a huff, shooting daggers at the little boy who may have been a year or two older than her. “An’ I told him that you were the best just because you only had one leg,” she nodded.
Augustus chuckled and would scoop Evelyn up in his arms, kissing a cheek. “Why, thank you for defending my honor. It means a whole lot to me,” he kissed her nose and it would wiggle up slightly, a splattering of freckles dotting over the bridge of it. “I love you infinity.”
“I love you infinity plus one.”
“I think you got me there,” he grinned. “Why don’t we go back to Grannie’s house and eat? Nana invited us over for dinner, you know.”
“Nana and Papa?” she gasped, and he nodded. “Yes!” She smiled wide, and Augustus returned it.
“Can you tell me the story about Ams’erdam again?” She’d question as he’d carry her back over to their spot to start cleaning up.
“Of course. It all started with a book you know. An Imperial Affliction, which was your mom’s favorite book--”

Augustus shrugged. "Don't be sorry," he chuckled. "It's not so bad." he then paused, tilting his head. "I didn't really know Osteosarcoma had an early stage. I mean, where do you have it? Limbs almost always have to come off," he furrowed his brow. "It's like you get 'sarcoma and it spreads within a couple days." He toyed lightly with his cigarette. "How'd you get diagnosed so quickly?"
Augustus raised a brow. "Yeah? I used to have that, too." he piped, lifting up one of his pants leg to show the prosthetic. "Where's yours?" he asked softly. "Oh, and I don't smoke," he shrugged simply, the cigarette staying unlit. "It's a metaphor."
"Shay, that's a nice name," he smiled lightly. "And nah, not new. I've lived in Indiana all my life," he chuckled. "I don't think I've seen you around school before though. What grade are you?"
