April Fools!
This is a genuine question: How long does it take you to make each update for your nuzlocke comic? I’m thinking of starting my own, but I don’t know where to start.
OoC: Sorry this one was in my inbox for so long! Each update varies greatly since Ask Azelf isn't a set amount of panels for each update. Usually, I script while making the sketch in CSP (I have a notes document to keep track of important plot things but mostly the dialogue is improvised on the spot, if tweaked during cleanup). After the sketch, I do the lineart with the default brush in a different layer, and then again to have the final lines be neater. Next, I colour the background before the characters (eating my veggies first). Finally, I add the text and draw the word balloons. For me, this whole process take a few hours but it's scattered since I'm often pretty busy, and I like to let an update breathe a little in the sketch stage so I can come back to it with a fresh eye. This is just my process, though! Your timeframe will look different depending on your art style, how long you want the story to be, and how many panels you dedicate to each scene. I made comics-friendly decisions during the Nuzlocke run's gameplay, such as making it a no-box run for the sake of having less characters to juggle, and making the comic have a limited, mostly monochrome palette helps save time too. Ultimately, you just have to start drawing/writing to know how long it'll take you. Don't forget the first Nuzlocke comic was made in MS Paint! If you look at some older, complete Nuzlocke comics, I encourage you to seek out the ones with the biggest art evolution to encourage you to get started no matter your skill level.
Ex: Here's a comparison of panels from YTWC's SoulSilver Nuzlocke comic, first update (2011) vs the Red fight (2018). I haven't read this one in forever but I remember being floored by the improvement here.
I just happened to come across by this by pure chance, and while usually I don't reply to posts like this, this time I feel pretty compelled to as the topic is about improvement — and the example here is actually from a thing I drew (which I was not credited for)!
So hi, YamaDora here! I drew YTWC's Nuzlocke, a comic that ran from 2011 to 2013. The second example here, the Red battle, was drawn in 2013, not 2018. I don't know how to feel that people think my art was that bad in 2018, but just to show:
This is from 2013:
And this is from 2018:
And while both pale in comparison to where my art is now in 2026, one can deny the improvement between the two, right?
That's the thing about art, too: you need to start making it, and make it regularly enough to have any improvement. That goes with any skill, there is no gain without work put into it.
It is easy to look up to someone whose work is in your eyes "cool" and "awesome" and think they were always able to do something like that and you'll never be able to do anything like that: but the truth is, behind every cool and awesome artist you see online is a hard worker who spent many years and poured all the possible bodily liquids just for their craft.
I have been doing what I do since 2007 (19 years), I have more than 3,000 comic pages worth of experience (nearly all of that fully colored traditionally in watercolor), of course it is gonna feel like you are not gonna compare when there are insane people like me and you haven't even started yet.
But that's the thing: you gotta always start somewhere.
And your first work will never be a masterpiece, oh no. But it is a starting point. Every thing you draw is a stepping stone that lets you get closer to that cool and awesome artist you might look up to. And eventually, you can get from this
to this:
All you need to do is to get started. You'll figure out the rest along the way.
POKÉMON DAY TOMORROW!!!

Also, if you’ll allow some shameless self-promotion, I had this happen in real time with Magiform, my webcomic that ran from 2019-2022:
First page is from chapter 1 (April 2019), second is from the chapter 7 victory lap/epilogue (November 2022). I was very new to colouring digitally at the time I started, and basically fresh out of art school. Notice the lack of any non-default pen tools and me not knowing how to turn the shading layer to Multiply, or using layer masks. All Magiform pages were inked traditionally because I wasn’t confident in my digital lineart yet, whereas all of Ask Azelf is done in CSP. I tried my best and I still stand by the first chapter, but it’s kind of a meme that every webcomic artist will eventually hate the first page. I think it’s more that you learn so much by wearing so many hats that you’ll be in awe at how much easier it is after a lot of practice. Your first webcomic is where you learn how to make a webcomic.

I just want to reassure you: I check this blog often to look for new posts. Take all the time you need between updates. I’ll wait patiently for them. ^u^
OoC: tthhank you ;-;
OoC: Here are some cute concept doodles to ease the wait! These were pretty early on so I hadn’t quite stylized the Lake Trio’s human forms yet.
Rowan is VERY concerned about this version of Lucas.
Whoops, reblogged that on the side account. I’ll take this opportunity to say that Ask Azelf isn’t abandoned, I’m just sorting some stuff out. I did a bunch of Sinnoh Underground stuff the other day and it reignited some story threads, though 👍
